One of my favorite unseen jokes from SAO Abridged is in Episode 2. When they say after they will meet at 2:30 PM, in the next shot the Location and Time pop up says 7:30 PM. They spent 5 hours walking up some stairs!

I’ve seen SAO and SAO Abridged and I can safely say that while Canon Kirito is a good _person,_ he isn’t a very good _character._ Abridged Kirito is basically the opposite, and that leads to a noticeably better plot, more character development, and lots of hilarious moments.

Not really the opposite. Abridged Kirito is just a person that is using the game to correct a power dynamic disparity in real life. To me Canon Kirito is too good and perfect(Same with Asuna), Abridged is just a random, very flawed, person that grows as the series trucks along. He retains the core of his personality due to the experiences before his personal growth. He is still snarky, foul mouthed, cocky and prideful....but he is less of a cynic, more trusting and capable of opening up and leave himself a bit vulnerable to his friends while trying to be a bit more understanding. Canon Kirito is basically a flat line during the entire series....and his loner tendencies because of what happened to the MLBCats was a stupid plot device. Abridged is basically a heart rate monitor with high and lows

I have seen far worse characters. Sao as a whole was a fun idea done in just a kinda mediocre way. Most of it is just kinda mid. Not bad but not good outside a handful of moments. Then comes gun game alternate which was far better then any season of Sao itself.

I can understand the first and second episodes being a little hard to get through, but it ultimately took off with the 3rd episode for me. Funny thing about the first couple of episodes is that Kirito's voice actor specifically plays like, 3-4 people including actual Kirito, which really messed with me the first time I started watching SAOA. And I don't blame anyone for not laughing much, it's the first couple episodes of an old abridged series, they're generally known for starting mediocre and getting better as the episodes go on.

Well as you've said, these are quite dated, so I see these earlier episodes with how the early DBZA was, going in with the same kind of expectations: DBZA E1-12 / SAOA E1-3 - Throwing in random, mostly now dated reference based jokes wherever they can without completely breaking the general narrative. DBZA E13-30 / SAOA E4-8 - Still quite some randomness in jokes, but they are a lot more based around the characters and world they have established, with a lot more care for maintaining the narrative. DBZA E31-60 / SAOA E9 and beyond - Taking great care with their writing to ensure the consistency of the plot, and are a lot more focused on recreating their version of the story with their own spin, patching plot holes of the original, an only passing the jokes within the bounds of their wacky characters and world, which is still quite vast range with everything they have already set up with the earlier episodes, and how much they have left open for possibilities.

New abridged episodes (of most shows) are just not as good as older ones. I know that a lot of people will disagree, and even here you say they're "dated". However, it's these episodes that set up the comedic value in the first place. It's the random goofiness and dated references that not only give you that general comedy feel, but as I said, they loop right back around to being used as content for later. The comedy becomes the lore of an abridged universe. But abridged series now go for making their own story now, and don't really think about the comedy aspect of it. So, instead of it being more about the comedy, it's more about the creators turning this original story into their own story, instead of turning the original story into comedy.

The thing i find with SAO abridged is that it gets funnier the further it goes. Like i personally think the 1st few episodes are less funny then once you pass a certain point, not sure why but for me its how it feels. (Not that the beginning is bad just by comparison)

I don't know if you guys have seen Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works but Project Mouthwash has been doing an Abridged series for it and the writing has been top-tier plus material, especially with the editing and voice acting. So, the reason Sword Art Online sort of "fumbles the ball" with the plot during S1 is because it was originally written as a short story for a contest, but the initial version was too long for the contest so the author decided to expand it into a full short series, which became the light novels. After the original light novels got popular, the author decided to keep the story going with a bunch of new story arcs, which is why the Gun Gale Online and later story arcs are way better. Once the anime started airing and the series got popular, he decided to go back and do a new, expanded version of the original story arc that covers everything that happened instead of random timejumps the original story had. This expanded version is called "Sword Art Online: Progressive", and is still ongoing. It was also made into 2 movies, with a third on the way. Additionally, it might be a while before we get S4 because not only is it the final story arc, but the light novels covering that same arc aren't finished either.

The best part of this abridged series is that it fixes a lot of the mistakes made in the original. If you don't enjoy it, then fine, to each their own. Maybe try out the more recent Sword Art Online episodes? I personally enjoyed Alicization. It takes the gripping feeling you had in the beginning of season 1 and ramps it up, and in my opinion it doesn't feel rushed at all.

The episodes took so long to make that I feel like it stops being outdated at a certain point. I stopped watching SAO when that Alice season came out, but the Gun Game season was when the boredom kicked in for me (plus girl Kirito was a bit strange). I’ve seen the abridged too much where I don’t really remember how the original was at this point. Some tips for evading the copyright bots, that I've especially noticed other channels doing with this series: - Flip the image L↔R - Put some noise/filtering over it - Skip (or at least mute) the non-OST music It's *probably* not true that someone is specifically going after you; SAO just has more active ContentID systems than most other Anime, so it's more likely that content from the show gets flagged by the system. So you just have to take proper precautions.

Kind of a longshot to ask, but you think they'll ever do a third rewatch of Hellsing Ultimate Abridged in the near future? I know Mica has at least made it to the end of the original screening a few years ago, and Nick and Chad were both introduced to the pilot episode not that long after.
