I was so excited at the beginning of this video seeing the raw scale of this world. But by the end, the global scale seems so wasted. Don't get me wrong, this seems like a great game. Just seems like way more engine than you need for this scale of gameplay. You could have gotten away with a much smaller world. Unless someday this game will take up a full globe worth of world.

I really hope there will be a big server someday where clans and empires are being built to actually gradually take over the whole world. Like history repeating itself in a game with different countries and maybe even languages.
@majicDave5 жыл бұрын
Hi, I understand what you are saying, and it is sort of a shame, I agree. One thing I found out though, is that in order for that scale to feel meaningfully huge, you need to be confined to operate on it in a very small way. The scale really is lost if you become huge in power and freedom. I do hope that as these primitive people evolve, they get the power to travel large distances. I'm not sure exactly how yet, but I don't intend to waste this scale by the time the game is done. And it'll feel all the more massive for having been restricted at the beginning.
@DRicke5 жыл бұрын
It's worth pointing out that there were a lot of civilizations that managed to achieve influence / dominance over rather large areas with relatively primitive technologies -- i think the real trick is finding reasonable ways to scale the power without getting dragged down into micromanagement. On a side note, this is my first exposure to your project, and this is awesome! I've always wanted to put something together that has a semi-realistic simulation of world creation, and it would seem you've done a great job of it.

11:40 Shape keys/morph targets are probably not a great way to go for your style because the planes are defined by individual triangles. They'll just look like warped versions of your base mesh. It's more effective with high density topology. I think you'd be better off compartmentalizing facial features into discrete meshes in a Mr Potato Head fashion and designing the parts to look as different as possible to create a sense of variety. Maybe make a library of eye and mouth textures instead of using geometry for those. You'll probably get the highest value from focusing on hair and other large shapes that affect the silhouette. Just stumbled upon this video and your project for the first time, looking forward to seeing this unfold as you add more features :D

I'm thinking that when they get clothing it'll help, I'd recommend some elaborate outfits for that purpose. some issues though If two sapiens get the same outfit, you would still rely on their faces larger amounts of sapiens is always going to be tricky to make individual if the sapiens change their outfit that could be an issue(maybe they could have a preferred style? (this sounds ridiculous, but give some random values for clothes at birth and they will choose they clothe with the highest value) so many outfits is a lot of work, asset creation is the most time consuming part of game dev sometimes but this is a natural part of making clothes from multiple materials(just realised you may not even have hot-cold or tribal identity??!(sorry I have been reading dwarf fortress devlogs) mechanics to make this necessary). Another dev has given them hats which exist from birth until death and cannot be taken off. this would suit your portrait UI but I don't think this is your style. An easier option for this is colour values like colour or hair, skin, eyes ect Giving some rank description to their name (chief, doctor, child) genders and children. perpetual facial expressions would be funny( some guy who always laughs, frowns or screams) but I dont think this is your style some stupid ideas in here but maybe it will give you some better ideas of your own

Say something like " I just want to put a capsule on the screen and move it around on a flat plane".... Then; say "Now, When I press the SpaceBar flames should shoot out from the front of it"................... As an amateur developer myself it is super easy to be overwhelmed by the scale of all the work involved. Take small steps and be inspired to have fun along the way. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT go in hoping to make your dream game. You will only frustrated yourself.

@Fabian Meyetons yeah..but maybe those engines aren't capable of doing what he plans to do with the game.
@stevelarry38705 жыл бұрын
Fabian Meyertöns Unity is free, but you have to pay if you don’t want a watermark. Unreal is free but you have to give I think 5% of your profits to Epic if you decide to sell a game using it (unless you use EGS).

Amazing, Back when I was 10 or 11 in 2014 I wrote up something as a game design, a poly based survival game without zombies or anything, I haven't seen much of this video yet but it looks really similar, it makes me so happy!

No please don't!!! This could strengthen their thinking because all of this is a simulation... :D They would say.., Look, you made this in CGI.., the Sky.., the fake round Planet!! That's the proof!! The Earth is FLAT!!! But to be honest.., everyone should know.., that we live in the Matrix!!! xD

You should totally keep this low-poly feel going and stylize the game a little more. Photorealism is kind of burnt out unless it's absolutely mindblowing, imo.
@oooodaxteroooo5 жыл бұрын
malomalovids dumbo is another good example, why realism has a place, but is certainly not the default way to go for entertainment. just IMGAINE: every book or film would be realistic. its... almost sad, yeah? ;)

Yeah photorealism can age badly over time in my experience, where low-poly styles can remain timeless.

oh wow, the randomly generated planet thing is what I've been really wanting to do recently, wouldn't have a clue in hell where to start though
@YaINNNNN5 жыл бұрын
I've never really prorammed games or anything 3D... But I would start with a sphere, then go on to tarrain generating, maybe randomize it, so every planet is different. Then start adding textures to different height, e.g. on high places snow, on low places water, in the middle grass or sand for desert. then start adding physics to the water. and so on, just what I thought how i maybe would apporach it :)
@shadda84725 жыл бұрын
@@YaINNNNN I think you usually don't make your world a sphere, not sure why but probably because of easier physics and basically everything's easier. You then just kinda connect the edges. If you want some kind of curvature you'd probably do that only via rendering and not in your real world.
@YaINNNNN5 жыл бұрын
@@shadda8472 that's right, you usually take a dice and "blow it up" to make a sphere, for more symmetrical triangles to model the world, I think a KZbinr called david lauge has a video about this

When I look at this, I don't see a game. Least not a durvival game. I see someone who just made Earth. He literally is breathing life into a world that was formed from nothing but his hands on the keyboard. This is epic. Don't make it a survival game. Make it something that people can just watch as the game unfolds itself, with animals and humans and weather and everything. Yeah, it's a lot to ask, but four years got you thus far and nobody says it has to be just like our Earth. It's unique to the people living in this engine. They know only what's around them, just as we know only what's around us. You are their god, and you have made them a home.

i really want to learn how to do this stuff
@Vicorcivius5 жыл бұрын
Then you need to first learn 3d modeling, Go download Blender and get at making 3d models and animations. You probably will also need to learn a programming language. Check out GoDot Game Engine, Just google it, Its an absolutely free game engine that you can use to make 2d or 3d games and it has everything you need to actually put the game together and get it up and running. But you still need to be able to create your own textures and 3d models and sprites all that stuff. Unless you just use free ones or something or buy some off a website.

This looks utterly amazing! I for one can't wait to play the game. Insane that it's just a one man development team, I'm wondering if you could put together a team to make it move faster while still having control over the creative process? Also it would be great to have two gamemodes in Sapiens: Singleplayer - the player controls the development of the humankind from hunter-gatherers to a developed self-sustaining civilization and Multiplayer - the player controls one tribe in a server where each player starts off with just a handful of people to control Alternatively - multiplayer where each player controls one human, and they have to work together to build society. Can't wait for a playable version!

Wow man, i'm a web developer, and have been thinking some ideas for a game, but i don't have many game devs connections yet, and it'll be a bit of a learning journey. I've been measuring the work around the whole game, and when i thought in doing all by myself i thought, jee, this gonna take around 4 years, and it kinda took a bit of my motivation away as I don't have much extra time available for building games. This was definitely a found Dave, amazing work, i'm heavily inspired by your work, specially low poly artwork and visual, now I feel fired up! thank you Very much! Now i feel I can do it! this looks like you've had fun, but you may want a gdd to stop feature creep :P and it may be a little late to create an art board.
