Did you only do temperature and noise testing with Furmark? Or did you monitor it as you tested games? Because I know from personal experience that using Furmark puts excessive unrealistic load on the GPU, causing much higher temperatures and fan speeds than what you would normally get when gaming.

In this case, only FurMark, but you can check my RX 470 Nitro review where I tested it in game (SW:BF), and compared to FurMark, it was just one degree difference and around 50-100 RPM's difference, which is not a lot. If the game is well optimized, results aren't that far from a FurMark scenario.

Thanks for the video. Will you be doing a temperature and sound comparison between the reference? Say side by side, or more information to make it more in depth. Like I don't know what the +15 db means. 15 db's from when it's not running? Or 15 db's compared to a reference at the same speed, which doesn't make sense but hey idk. what is the bd level of it exactly? cause 15 db's to 0 doesn't mean much. Did you turn on the db reader before it started spinning to get it at a base level, cause psu, and case fans may effect it as well. But I just wasn't sure what was going on, if you could answer some of these questions, it would be great. Or a video would be great as well. Thanks for your time.

+Les broken vich Dez Before all, that's not a measurement of any kind. Since the mic doesn't pick up the sound that well in a way that it can represent "a real life / in person" noise profile of the fan noise, I do a +15 dB gain so you'll get a better feel of the noise that it makes, trying to achieve what it would be to hear it when standing in front of it. I do that for all of my cooler noise testing of graphics cards, it's not meant to be a scientific method, nor it wants to be, it's just a way of me giving you a rough estimate what it sounds like. I'll be getting a noise meter soon so I can have a definitive numbers and more scientific approach. :) I turn of the fan on the CPU cooler and stop the fan on the PSU for a period of 30 seconds.

The 8gb version compared to the 4gb versions boasts no real difference at 1080p. 1440p and above the 8gb vram starts to kick in usually seeing almost double the performance.

Jareware It depends on the game, I play in SecondLife for example and since it is all user created content sometimes the vram makes a HUGE difference in fact it makes the most difference on some sims. A 750ti has enough power for SL but it lacks enough vram. That is just one example and I am sure there are others like possibly WOW.

Question: I watched your Nitro+ RX 470 review and I was curious about the bios switch. If I switch it to its stock or lower clock mode. Can I turn it down some more? So it'll be at 150W? Because electricity is expensive here and I'm willing to sacrifice performance for it. I'll even turn down the settings a bit if need be. Can I downclock it? Please help me guys. You can always downclock it, that's not a problem. Lower down the voltage and clocks, play with it a bit and see what will be stable.

gtx 1060, although people saying rx 480 will say it last longer for dx12, the card are gettin weaker if we wait till all of the good games in dx12 come out. i personally recommend gtx 1060 the EVGA GTX1060 SUPERCLOCKED 6GB Version because its bang for the buck. BUT, if you really want that rx 480, its your choice

The RX 480 is closing in on GTX 1060 with every new driver update, plus it's stronger in Vulkan and DX12 benchmarks. That's a really tough one! Flip a coin :D

This is not the first test that shows poor noise levels on Nitro and some crazy 2000 RPM+ needed to keep temps below 80C, which is quite horrible score for this card, especially if Sapphire is known from amazing efficient and quiet cooling solutions for cards like Fury that produce waaay more heat than 480.

I agree, this looks very disappointing from Sapphire. My 390 Nitro doesn't get above 72c under load and it certainly produces more heat than the 480.

50% on my nitro 370 is only about 1800-2200 rpm). I'll hit 65-70c pretty quick playing a few games (fallout 4, etc. mostly ultra 1080p), this is a very low end budget card. So, I don't think you should be tooo terribly concerned about that RX480 heat.

Good case cooling, but not the best. R9 380 NITRO @ 1100 core and 1500 memory, auto fan control (default) at Heaven benchmark hits max of 72 C.

Could be another issue with their thermal paste applications. I replaced my sapphire 390 with CLU and saw temps drop by 15-20 degrees. Whilst that stuff may be liquid metal, even replacing stock with mx4 initially, which is seen to not be particularly good as gpu paste saw temps drop by 5-7 degrees.

man its sad thought it would do better kinda hot and didn't overclock much better. Maybe the strix will run better, polaris is kinda like pascal in most every card overclocks in the same ballpark no matter power setup or pcb. Well if i was buying a card in that range i would get the small evga 1060 for $250 and do a small form factor build. I have a zotac 1070 Amp Extreme but want to do a build with my old cpu the 3770k and a 480 or 1060. Still might go 480 just to tinker with amd.

In my country Nitro+ 8GB (1342MHz) and the Gaming X 8GB (1316MHz) are the same price. Which one will you go for? Personally, I don't think the 1342MHz (nitro) over the 1316MHz (msi) gain a big profit... maybe 1~3 more FPS.

It will smack a 380x. It'll perform somewhere between 390 and 390x in some games, and between 390x and nano in others.

380X is a strange card. Under DX11 it performs in between a 960 and a 970 and under DX12 it marginally beats the 970. The 380X was an amazing price / performance card a few weeks ago, but the 480 has changed everything. Like ... EVERYTHING.

Lets not be fan boys here, I got a rx 480 sapphire nitro + 4gb but I wont say its for everyone. The rx 480 will have better performance in time in dx 12 but it will take some time, meanwhile the gtx 1060 outperforms the rx 480 in all current titles dx 12 included. There are exceptions to this (like Doom, Gears of war Ultimate edition and a few others) I would say if being asked: If you plan to have the graphic card for 3 years or more buy the rx 480 otherwise get the 1060 simply because it has a 10-15% ahead in performance in most games at this moment and although this number will shrink (likely anyway/hoping) the rx 480 wont pass it in performance during this time.

So, I went from 1306 to 1380 MHz. I could get 1400 MHz also, but It wasn't stable enough for all my games. As for the memory, from 1750 to 1910 MHz. I could also get it to around 2000 MHz, but again, not completely stable for all my games and benchmarks.

For mid range this is an awesome piece of hardware. AMD VP says multi gpu is the future, have a team working to make it smooth as silk. rx480 in crossfire along with Vulkan api is here. It's a combination that's going to be tough to beat. If your on a budget you wont beat a single rx480 for 1080p. If you plan on higher res. or VR in the future, two of these are the way to go. I don't recommend 4gig versions, get that 8gig son.

Those are the FPS I got during a fixed gameplay scene (around 5 minutes on the beginning of the game), so it can vary from part to part. I got those numbers even with the reference card and with GTX 1060 (a bit higher dough). Maybe you saw Vulkan API results?

Depending on the Level i usually get 100 to 180fps on my R9 390 on 1080p with Vulkan... On Nightmare Seetings and 8xTSSAA. The fps scores shown here seem icnredibly low. My bet is that he is using an old driver that isn't game ready.

You would have lost that bet. If you watched a bit closer, or at all, you could have seen that I've used the latest AMD driver, the one with the hotfix - 16.7.2. BTW. I've already got that question before, people were wondering why is it "so low" and then they realized it was openGL and not Vulkan, and that's the main reason of "low" FPS. I've already address the issue of not testing on Vulkan API, I had some issues with the PresentMon, so I couldn't measure FPS. I'm planing to do a Vulkan coverage soon (DOTA 2 and DOOM).

I went for the r9 fury nitro xD total switch but since I play on 1080p widescreen I don't need more than 4 gig of vram. Plus the fury is SO much beter build. I held them both in my hands and you can just feel the difference in componentquality.. A card that is build as a premium 600 dollar card vs budget 200 dollar card. Yep there are compromises like powerdraw, but solar pannels solve that shit easy ;-) And at the time I payed as much for the fury as i would have payed for an rx 480. At the moment the GTX 1060 is better card since it performs about 10% better in current games. That said, RX 480 performs better in Vulkan/DX12 which is what new games will have so if you want card that will last you probably longer then the RX480 ... but you will sacrifice some performance now.

Hum, can you check out the noise of the various 480s after a few driver updates? From what I've heard there's some issues with drivers and the AiBs blaming AMDs drivers for higher noise levels then ideal on their cards...

I would, but I don't have the card anymore! I've addressed that issue already, if the drivers are bringing the speed of the fans up, what kind of temperatures are we going to have it goes down with the next driver update? Over 80°C?

TekTick The temp isn't really a big deal, the noise is however. And the issue was that the fans spins up too aggressively not that they're too slow. Basically AMDs drivers are aiming for about 60 C while Sapphire is aiming for about 80 C and sometimes the fans will spin up despite not reaching Sapphires target temp making it noisier then it needs to be. After all, the passive cooling will be more effective when the difference in temp is higher. The driver difference won't change the top OC possible (the sapphire cards actually seems to be able to reach higher OCs then a lot of the other cards for some reason, I've seen a few 1420 MHz reviews out there, you can't really go that much higher then that with just air) But they seem to be more noisy then the competition too, if AMDs drivers are to blame then that might make this card more appealing to me at least once that has been fixed, as I'm kind of a silence freak. I've yet to see a 1440 MHz OC on the other cards, I'm hoping to see one from some of the 3 fan cards as I'm tempted to go with the Strix, since it can also control case fans and is the most silent of the 480s so far as far as I can see (although there seem to be a bit of variance in how silent they are from reviewer to reviewer) I might also go with MSI or with Powercolors Red Devil... But for now the only two cards announced as sold in my country is the strix and nitro, so those two are of particular interest to me...

TekTick Good =) Oh, and I meant "another 1420 MHz review" up there... 1440 was just a typo... >< Anyway, I *really* hope I can see a 1420 MHz review of other cards too as I'll occationally be forced to OC my card to make the 3440x1440 screen I'm planing to drive with the 480 playable... But the noise level is probably still going to be the deciding factor for me when buying one of these... Anyway, thanks. =)

I've been reading that a statement from sapphire has said that the driver that has been used by reviewers around the time the card launched has an impact on the fan noise due to the AMD driver overriding a profile that is baked into the card BIOS that reduces the speed of the fans. I'm hoping that the latest driver from AMD has fixed this and wondering if anyone who has this specific card can verify for me?
