As a French, I didn't know this show. It was not aired on French TV. I discovered "Sapphire & Steel" on YT. It's really strange and intriguing.

Still horrified by the final episode's ending. Very cool show.

This is surreal and atmospheric enough that I could see picking it up later down the line.

This was an interesting show. Sapphire's character is a 180 from Patsy on Ab Fab.

If there's any direct antecedent to Sapphire and Steel, it might be Nigel Kneale's old TV play The Road (don't bother looking it up, the Beeb wiped it). It involves an 18th century farming community experiencing ghosts in a haunted forest. But they're not ghosts of people who had died but those of frightened bystanders on the M5 expressway being thrust backwards in time by a nuclear war.

The existing Nigel Kneale teleplay The Stone Tape is another good example. The house is haunted not by ghosts, but by recordings of previous deaths for some ultimately unknowable reason, dating back to before humanity. In a way, it takes the parochial attitude of most ghost stories-going back a generation or a century to a recorded past-and instead extends it to cosmic scale.

@@cameronmarnoch5236 Quatermass and the Pit also has different theory. Spoiler talk. The ghost or devil is really projection by ancient machine as beacon to open hidden senses in human body.

The best contextualising of Sapphire and Steel I’ve watched, thank you! All the assignments are unedited here on KZbin, so anyone who’s interested, do check them out. :)

Lovely treat! This was super helpful for a thing I'm doing, and completely unexpected. I remember seeing reruns of S&S in Italy when I was a kid (here it's Zaffiro & Acciaio) and the clip you chose brought some memories back and unblocked an exposition scene I'm writing. Always glad to be a patreon!

This was an unexpected and very welcome review of the series and its relation to ghost stories and hauntings. Very concise and i get that you didnt wish to spoil the rest of the rest of the stories or go into too much detail, since much of the raison detre of the series is to be engaging as well as vague on the particulars in order to maintain the air of mystery and uncertainty. Plus you wanted to guve people just enough of a taste to recommend the series if they wished to check it out for themselves. Nicely done.

Huh! I learnt some stuff I did not know, and I’m usually an obnoxious know-stuff guy, so this has been really cool and a little humbling! Thank you!

Love the sign-off text. Trans rights are human rights! The British TV tradition of ghost stories is quite a fun part of its history, especially the Christmas part. Who doesn't want one at Christmas? Peter Capaldi is doing one this year,

Been wanting to check this series out since someone wrote a crossover story featuring it and Doctor Who. The plot was very, very S&S! Maybe it's time to check the series out....

I know I'm extremely late to this. But there is a British company called big Finish who write audio dramas and between 2000/2001 they had the licence to create a continuing narrative for the sapphire and Steel they are no longer available from their website but if you do a eBay search for sapphire and Steel audio dramas you will be able to find them there are. Unlike the television show they are not written by PJ Hammond and do not Joanna Lumley are David McCallum reprise their roles. But have Susannah Harker and David Warner take over the parts. And just like the television series they push the envelope an experiment quite heavily with the audio medium
