The first time I heard this song was the totally undocumented at the very end of the NO ALTERNATIVE collection, which I'd bought for the Uncle Tupelo cut (😂) and had no idea it was even there. (as a result of it not even being in the liner notes, for years I thought this song was "Verse Chorus Verse", which is too bad because that's one of my favorite song titles... shrug) Still getting over my shock (is this, wait, is that _Nirvana!?)_ , and then I heard the solo start, and actually thought for just a second, oh no, it couldn't be Nirvana... he never does solos like that! Then he brought it down for a landing (2:10) and I knew it was him. RIP.

Kurt May not be the most technically sound guitarist, but he is a really underrated guitarist. His solos on songs like this, Man Who Sold the World, and Smells Like Teen Spirit are really good! Plus he's written riffs that have inspired plenty of musicians (including myself). He is very underrated and is a brilliant lyricist/songwriter. He's a legend.

Which is pretty funny when you consider it was written about Kurt's pet turtle that, literally, lived in his laundry room. But even something so, seemingly weird and irrelevant can have a lot of deeper meaning/truth/insights when you really consider it.
@timeandtide50563 жыл бұрын
He'll keep you in a jar , give you breathing holes, cover you with grass & you'll think you're happy. Devil's lettuce or whatever substance or emotion. There's a lot of room for interpretation in music. A song's meaning to you does not have to be defined on Google.

Nobody seems to be talking about it- I think this song could be about OR be used for a woman in an abusive or/and manipulative relationship with man. The lyrics "and if you save your yourself, it will make him happy" means (to me) he'd want a virgin, Kurt referes to him wanting preference on her, bending her to his will, CUSTOMIZES his gf to how he wants her to look and act, like a doll. The reason I automatically thought he was describing virginity in a relationship (most likley hetero) was because that's a term a lot of people use on women who'd want to keep their virginity. "He'll keep you in jar" as if he's keeping her hidden away as a little pet to control, only for him. "You'll think your happy" is the manipulation part of it, he only acts sweet if it benefits him in the way that she's staying, and she's fooling and lying to herself thinking this is how a normal relationship between a man and women is supposed to be. It's like he's describing a relationship were the guy only keeps her around for sex and her body; he doesn't actually gave a shit about her. It's no secret Kurt was big on equality and all that stuff, but of course, lots of people are saying it was actually about his turtle!... lol, but ya...just a thought I had.

Btw, Cristóbal, great job with these. Normally I prefer my lyrics _sans_ punctuation, over pretty images. But your lettering (stark white words over empty darkness) and the exclamation points ("Nowwwww!") perfectly capture the weird, hearty-but-doomed vibe of this underappreciated song.
