This song is exquisite. The emotion, pain, journey and self resignation are so perfectly imperfect. I listen to this, a safe place to land and basket case (heck so many more) when life is hard and I need some musical poetry, a good cry with a side of validation and emotive complexity. Thank you Sara, for all you share and give, you help many through the human experience.

YES! I feel the same exact way. You stated it so eloquently! It’s cathartic when I need a good cry and a reality check of just how strong and resilient I can be when life once again throws a major curveball. I also tend to berate myself for things I wish I did differently or for circumstances that are truly beyond my control. The life circumstances can be different, yet still resonate!

@@wendysaslow8631 I'm not the only eloquent one, you encapsulated it perfectly. This is also how I feel about safe place to land at the moment. Life feels so hard. With many things going wrong but Sara's music and even just her words - I'm a poet I've started many a poem after hearing a line that just resonated so deeply I couldn't let it go - help to remind us just how universal emotions can be. I too have a mean inner critic who makes it hard to see the sunlight often. I think this is why I love Sara's work the darkness is part of her soul so she can write from both joy and sorrow/pain. I hope one day I can see her in concert. I hope you are hangin in there? 💐

Me and my husband lost for awhile. Since then, i kept singing this song cause i feel like im gaining so much strength from the arrangement and lyrics.. On 25/4/2021, I lost my baby. Now im in my recovery session still listening to u. For my vocal class, i adore your pieces so much. I even teach my vocal student to love your music and your songs And i managed to influence her to listen and learn singing technique from your song. I spent 15 years as a working waitress . A work injury in 2013 left my shoulder with permanent damage, chronic pain that forced me to leave hospitality… most turbulent & unstable years of my life so far… Being a Sara fan since forever, when I heard this song, and still when I hear it now… Its almost impossible for me to NOT HEAR my life since injury, in these words. I cry almost EVERY TIME, because I had to stop work, uni, hobbies & a decade on I’m still trying to get back to half the person that ‘used to be mine’…

I hear you sweetie. But I left my abusive husband of 23 year 21 years ago. I have 5 grown children with him, and they all witnessed the abuse. I suffer from PTSD, anxiety, and panic attacks because of what I endured for so many years of my life. My grown children don't call me, and I have 5 beautiful grandsons who really don't even know me at all. I am broken, I am lonely all of the time. I do have a wonderful fiance, and he is a wonderful man, but these past few years have been really difficult. I'm in stage 3 kidney failure, and it seems that my kids just don't care. This song brings me to tears, and I want to post it one of these days on my Facebook page, in hopes that maybe my kids will see it as a cry for help. I'm not sure how much longer I can go on this way. I miss them all so much 😢

She will sacrifice everything but when this woman wakes up that she she is not appreciated she will walk away without turning back and at the end the man will appreciate the treasure that he took for granted and he will say “SHE USED TO BE MINE”.Sara the way you sang this it truly touched something inside me that I healed already but the raw truthfulness of your lyrics are like a dagger to my heart and that was 2012 like it was just yesterday.

This song...this song is everything I've said and couldn't say out loud to others or myself and I personally can't sing it without crying. Most times just singing the second verse makes me cry can't get through it entirely have to stop and cry and then sing again lol. Where ever this song came from deep within your soul I appreciate that part and you also everyone else who contributed to this song it really is the plait of a woman that had good intentions but life and love brought her to this point and now so many things has happened and u can't really undo any of it...oh but we wish we could because we now know better. Yet ironically thats the point of a mistake...u learn from it. If u are ever down and wonder if u have made an impact on people's lives rest your head knowing you have. You are the artist I aspire to be someday. Wish I was a fly on the wall so I could learn from u and your experience in this industry.

Absolutely gorgeous song, beautifully presented, but that single distant "Whoo!" at the end is comedy gold.

So many amazing singers have sung this so beautifully. But nobody can sing it straight into my heart the way Sara does. Wrecks me (in the best of ways) each time

It's not simple to say Most days I don't recognize me These shoes and this apron That place and its patrons Have taken more than I gave 'em It's not easy to know I'm not anything like I used to be Although it's true I was never attention sweet center I still remember that girl She's imperfect but she tries She is good but she lies She is hard on herself She is broken and won't ask for help She is messy but she's kind She is lonely most of the time She is all of this mixed up And baked in a beautiful pie She is gone but she used to be mine It's not what I asked for Sometimes life just slips in through a back door And carves out a person And makes you believe it's all true And now I've got you And you're not what I asked for If I'm honest I know I would give it all back For a chance to start over And rewrite an ending or two For the girl that I knew Who be reckless just enough Who can hurt but Who learns how to toughen up when she's bruised And gets used by a man who can't love And then she'll get stuck and be scared Of the life that's inside her Growing stronger each day 'Til it finally reminds her To fight just a little To bring back the fire in her eyes That's been gone but it used to be mine Used to be mine She is messy but she's kind She is lonely most of the time She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie She is gone but she used to be mine
