I went and married a West Virginian some 25 years ago. My wife and I have traveled pretty extensively through Europe and made many new friends in pubs. Whenever anyone in any country hears she is from West Virginia - they immediately start singing this song. We've heard it in probably 7 different languages too! It is amazing to us that such a humble song about a humble place could be so embraced worldwide. You've done a beautiful job capturing it and presenting it as your own. Well done, Ms. Sara!

Not many people are not that well-read/around educated to know the reason why there is a Virginia- and a West Virginia though.🤔A simple answer is the U.S. civil war. Greetings from Stockholm, Kingdom of Swden!
@jeffbrown43828 ай бұрын
@@17461771 Yes, the counties that became West Virginia could not form a new State without the consent of the existing State. They wanted to form a new State even before the war, but couldn't. So it took the secession of Virginia from the United States to pave the way for those counties to form the new State.

This is a long story, I'll shorten it, so please no comments on grammar. 30+ yrs ago somewhere in east Thailand. 16 guys from 10 different countries. Every evening same bar hangout. Come closing time the waitress would put country roads in the tapedeck, turn volume to max, and we would sing our adopted national anthem top of our lungs. End of our time there, we said we'd meet same bar 350 days later. Internet and email did not exist of course. So 350 days later I went alone into same bar at 1400 hrs. Same girl there said nothing at first but played country roads. Thought it was coincidence. I told her I was there the year before. "Yeah, I know. You're the coca cola on the rocks guy. This your national song. Your friends coming too?" By 1800 hrs 15 guys made it.

Being a Kiwi living in Australia for the past decade, I have to say that Australians are truly a great nation of people. I work in concrete, and some of the toughest & and hard-working men are in the industry are incredible. I often think about how similar but different Australia is to America just by the fact of how they love their countries and work hard to keep their country liveable. As an ANZAC, it's an honour to be gifted living here. We go to war together, and we work together even being the "Little Brother" isn't an insult, but an actual praise.

From a native West Virginian, great job! I doubt you've ever traveled to the Mountain State. I recommend it. West Virginia is at once an obscure, small, and impoverished state and a land of natural beauty and unlimited dreams. While it is certainly heartwarming, I still find it somewhat odd that John Denver's song would be song around the world by many peoples who have no real appreciation for West Virginia. Perhaps, it's the appeal of nostalgia and the hope for a homeland that is somehow oblivious to modern troubles, but Country Roads has touched the hearts of millions around the world and is quite naturally, a heartfelt anthem for all West Virginians,

Thru the first verse, I heard a voice that said: "Sir, I am from West Virginia, can I sing this song with you?" There he was, this young Coast Guard recruit docked in Dutch Harbor, AK. I replied: Get a Mic...… and, so He did.... That made my day... I loved John Denver growing up. He is one of the reasons I started to play guitar, and to write songs in my youth. He has been a big mentor in my music career. Being so far away from home. This song brought me home every time. Still now, when I sing this song in any bar, the whole bar sing in one voice.
