Nicest comment ever! Thanks Kirk 8-) [I'm the double bass player + produced Sara Spade's first album "Boy Next Door" which has been played on BBC Radio 1,2,3 & 4 ... if you'd like a copy please goto www.SaraSpade.com and buy direct from the artist: we make very little from CD sales & literally less than pennies from downloads....so I hope you will buy the CD...there is also another (more retro-pop-flavoured) album we recorded more recently]

Actually, although I like the Andrews Sisters, this is NOT their song. It was originally written and performed by Lord Invader of (guess where?) Trinidad. The Andrews Sisters pinched it and changed the words to a more "respectable" version. Lord Invader sued them and eventually reached a settlement. Listen to the original Lord Invader version. I think you will find it interesting.

When I heard this song first, I don't think it was meant to be this cheery and light.... Lord Invader... But o well let's have a drink🤔🥃

I think Lord Invader knew exactly what he was doing, talking about alcohol & foreigners & prostitution & wrapping it all up in a cheerful song: being subversive doesn't always mean being gloomy...and is often more powerful & longer-lasting if it's wrapped up with comedy and lightness... ;-)

A good version musically, with good sound. A pity that more modern musos are unwilling to sing the unbowdlerised lyrics of the original Lord Invader protest song.

For anyone reading this string, here are the lyrics which are as dark as some rums... (Sara Spade sings some of them, but I guess may not have heard ALL of them when she first learned the song ;-) Rum & Cola Lord Invader original lyrics (source: musixmatch) And when de Yankeys first went to Trinidad Some ah de young girls were more than glad, Deh said that de Yankeys treat dem Nice And deh give dem the better Price. Deh buy rum and coca-cola, went Down Point Cumana, Both mothers and daughters, Workin Fuh deh yankey dollar. And look, I had ah little chick De odda day, But her mother came and took her Away, Ah self and her mother and her sisters Went tuh make out with some soldiers. Deh bought rum and coca-cola, Went Down Point Cumana, Both mothers and daughters, Workin Fuh deh yankey dollar. Deh have some Aristos in Port Of Spain I know alot but ah won't call names, And in the day wouldn't gih you a right But yuh go see dem with deh foreigners late at night. Drinkin rum and coco-cola, goin down Point Cumana, Both mothers and daughters, Workin Fuh deh yankey dollar. I know a couple who got married one Afternoon, An was tuh go tuh Miami on deh Honey- Moon, But de bride run away, with de soldier Lad And de stupid husband went starin Mad. Because rum and coco-cola, goin down Point Cumana. Both mothers and daughters, workin Fuh deh yankey dollar.

Please read the lyrics by Lord Invader: this is a song written specifically about those two subjects. It is also a comment on the economic and political situation experienced on the island as regards America, at the time of writing.

You have misunderstood & I think you will approve of the actual facts & meaning behind the song: this song was written by Trinidadian musician Lord Invader, using his own island's Calypso rhythms, and with lyrics intended as a protest against American influence on his native island's values and society. If you care to learn more, you can read about it here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rum_and_Coca-Cola

The facts are exactly what I had in mind. US producers stole the song that lamented the lamented the effects of the foreign military occupation and reworded it, to make it into a jeer, a mockery of the occupied.
