I feel like this is made for the queers who were in middle and high school in the 00s, cuz we didn’t get to have openly queer music, and if it did exist it wasn’t made for teens. now there’s so many openly queer artists in almost every genre and it makes me SO happy for young queers today, but also broken-hearted for little me who was outed at 15 and had really nothing to turn to that specifically spoke to me. I mean any queerness that was represented in the mainstream when I was outed was white cis gay men, and of course I celebrated it as progress, but I didn’t have anything that represented MY identity and was craving it so much. When hayley kiyoko’s song girls like girls came out in 2012(?) near the end of high school for me, it was the only thing close to what I was experiencing and I played it over and over again because it was all I had. Sure there had been some stuff that was subtly queer but that was the first queer femme song that was like HELL YEAH I LOVE WOMEN and it brought me to tears.

Until recently I was a teacher, and I was constantly so fucking psyched about how comfortable all my queer and nonbinary students felt about just openly being themselves, and also made me heartbroken for all my friends and everyone in highschool in the 2000s who didn't feel safe to be out. I went to a highschool with 3000 students and didn't know a single openly queer or non-binary person, including my best friend's sister as we all later were thrilled to find out when she came out as trans. And this was in California, albeit in a small mountain town where I regularly saw the Confederate flag being flown off the back of trucks by losers (who are hopefully and statistically more likely to be dead of COVID, so there's a ray of sunshine). It's crazy how recent and yet how far in the past that feels at the same time.

I Kissed A Girl was never a gay anthem, it's very explicitly about not being gay
@FinnMcRiangabra3 ай бұрын
@@Feasco Interesting. How, explicitly, is it about not being gay? The lyrics describe hesitation at first, then go toward calling out presumably nice qualities of girls (so soft, etc.) I'll say that the song never struck me as being a "gay anthem," but more as telling a story of, "hey, I tried it, it was kinda nice..." and not giving a conclusion one way or another about the protagonist's likes/orientation. It seems to me to be a totally non-message song with a catchy beat and easily remembered lyrics, nothing more. Is your problem with, "I kissed a Girl," that the situation is improperly framed? I.e., If the singer were really gay, she'd know that's what she wanted and it would not be a case of, "oops, I kissed her, but it turns out I enjoyed it." Does this make the song seem like an inauthentic take on what it claims to say? I am sincerely not trying to give you any amount of crap about your post. I am trying to understand your position better.

Why is this so relatable? I was literally being spooned by a guy and all I could focus on was the fact that this girl’s elbow was touching mine. My brain kept going on about how it was like are elbows were holding hands 🥺 I wanted to kiss her so badly but I didn’t know if she liked me back.

I hate that people think this song is about cheating, it’s much more easily interpreted as a guy who is trying to get her interested in him, but she’s more taken with his sister
@michaelshigetani433 Жыл бұрын
I got the impression they were just friends. But she defiantly was more interested in his sister than him.
@beepboopstrawberry10 ай бұрын
EXACTLY. I don't think they were full on dating.
@jijitters10 ай бұрын
There isn't anything in the video or lyrics about them dating. It's literally just "the best thing about meeting you was getting to meet your sister" dude got friendzone'd is all.
