Sarah's warmth, passion and humanity..coupled with her technical gifts makes her, IMO, the greatest living exponent of the violin today. Others all have their wonderful strengths and qualities..but in total...and especially in the tonal interpretation of the major works, she's the best.

Thank goodness Brahms decided to write this concerto! It's fantastic! :) Sarah Chang and Kurt Masur are a splendid team!!

One has to truly admire a genius like Sarah. She was playing Bruch when she was 5, imagine that! She's my motivator :)

It's incredible how much experience she's had playing, even though she's not even thirty yet! This is such a difficult concerto, but she handles it with the gravity and power it needs, but an amazing grace and beauty. Splendid....!

Ms. Chang plays the Brahms concerto, which in my mind, is the most idyllic and perfect recording. She plays with such simple beauty and, at times, withdrawl... which for me is vital to this concerto. A consistent, even, beautiful tone, which she masters in an uncanny fashion. However, when the time is right, she hammers down into this movement and lets us know she isnt just a pretty violinist with a nice violin. Way to, yet again and again, sarah :)

"Brahms and his musical adviser Joseph Joachim...The idea of writing a violin concerto for his friend Joseph Joachim had presumably occured to Brahms long before he finnaly decided to take the work in hand during his summer vacation in 1878..." (Peter Jost) Miss Chang playing this concerto conducted by Kurt Masur...Superb !

@NimbleTurtle13 I agree...very well put. In terms of the music itself...hands down I love Sarah Chang...it stirs something profound in me emotionally and her performances stick with me. But with the Brahms, this monster of a concerto, Hahn shapes it architecturally very well. She does this superbly...same with Bach and the way she plays with his musical structures. And this is what I love - how each person brings their own strengths to the table!

@canzo0378 I agree...there's this unmistakable, unique, indescribable quality of her playing which is so captivating...I always feel like her violin is speaking...it's so human, so alive! She's so much more than just a prodigy! The 20's were difficult, but she made her favourite recording when she was going through a very difficult time...the Shostakovich/Prokofiev concertos. It takes more than a brilliant technique, it takes a huge soul and heart to be this good!!

@Tokgabi I agree. I find Hahn's Baroque and 20th century renditions amazing for her technical facility and intellectual capabilities, but in the Romantic repertoire Chang brings a tension and drama which the concertos just need. Everyone's different and I'm glad every musician is allowed the freedom to choose whatever he/she wants!

@boomer4666 ME TOO!! I was there! I took a plane, a shuttle, a skytrain, a seabus and a cab to get there!! But it was worth it! I'll remember it my whole life, I was at the very edge of my seat the whole time, and in the second movement she had me in tears :') (she needs to have her dress fixed though.. it was kinda slipping off her shoulder the whole time:P) I LOVE SARAH!! everybody thinks I'm insane for going to vancouver every weekend for music but i love it so much its totally worth it!!!

@vivl0x0ian3 I agree...the violin seems so "alive" when she plays...it's really weird, but I always know it's Sarah Chang playing...it takes someone really special to make an inhuman instrument sound so unique!

@Enix5548 Because, well I don't know...I'm a pianist, so I know that through hard work, anyone can play the notes perfectly, but not everyone has something special to say. Though I'm not saying Hilary Hahn is a bad artist or anything...she is a phenomenal music with a truly special gift, but she doesn't make me "dream" the same way as Sarah Chang when she plays. But there are things she's done I really do enjoy...and technically, she's AMAZING :O

@jiwonast222 Too true! But of course, the recording itself is fantastic...after ripping it to the computer as an mp3, uploading, etc. it loses some of its luster. The best is to see her live! Fantastic concerto and musicians...

@Enix5548 As I say...to each their own. To me, the "fire" of a performance makes it viable and beautiful to me...it may be obvious who plays all the notes perfectly, but to make them come alive...that's another story. But everyone likes a different performer...everyone's passionate about somebody - that's what makes classical music interesting! No other music can stir people up as much as this! :)

@vivl0x0ian3 Well, music (especially classical music) is such a great expression of your own personality. I enjoy Sarah Chang's passionate, lively playing a lot more, but maybe that's because I identify with her more. Hilary Hahn is amazing, but in a different way...everyone likes something different! That's what's so wonderful about the world!

@iluminada333 Hahn is . . . a machine. I feel close to nothing when I listen to her play. I appreciate her Bach, it's nearly flawless, as far as technique, counterpoint emphasis, etc. But whomever said he preferred Chang to Hahn in romantic rep is who I absolutely agree with. I feel almost an anxiety, such excitement in Chang's Tchaik concerto, but I saw Hahn play it with the DSO a season or two ago, and was toootally disappointed. It was stale to her. She's best with contemporary works.

@SsteinwayS - yes, yet it has nothing to do with the technical ability to produce images in sound, with musical words we perceive with our senses and interpret with our mind. It has to do with the characteristic of being Man, a separate design that reflects image and likeness of Him in us. It's noticeable in crop circle design against Michelangelo's La Pieta. Color, form and beauty it is not in the circles. Only the cold technical side.

@karpule I don't need to listen to your playing know that your passion for music makes you a good musician :) Music isn't just about the notes - it's about the person and the personality. Keep trying to find a teacher and practice and listen! That's all it takes. And LOTS and LOTS of hard work. And more practice.

@Flauterfiddle The Mendelssohn concerto is just "too perfect"...a little too predictable for me...the Brahms concerto, on the other hand is riveting and profound (in my opinion too). Sarah Chang makes it all the more appealing with her passion and amazing technique! Though the Mendelssohn is still a gorgeous concerto too...

You have the option to say that YOU like this or that better, but no; people just feel the need to say that they are the authorities of the whole music notion, and they can decide that someone IS better than the other, even though these people are not even close to being called by masses a "musician" I never hear my teachers in the conservatory say that some musician is better or any meaningless shit like that; but then again, we have comments like Hahn is better than Chang...
