Johannes Brahms' Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77, performed by Augustin Hadelich and the WDR Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Cristian Măcelaru. Recorded live on February 15, 2020 at the Cologne Philharmonic Hall. This concert is one of Augustin Hadelich's first public appearances with his new violin, the "Leduc"-Guarneri del Gesù from 1744, the last violin built by the Italian master violin maker Giuseppe Guarneri.

An exquisite concert. Hadelich deserves all the accolades he gets but the orchestra is wonderful. The oboe is beautifully played and provides the support the soloist needs for the beautiful passages he delivers. Heard Hadelich play amazing performance of Brahms in Strasbourg the other day. Every note beautiful and focussed. Even in arpeggios each note clear and projected above full orchestral accompaniment. You need to find the youtube video of him playing the Paganini Concerto with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. It was recorded I believe in Jan 2020. Unbelievable playing....The audience gave him a very appropriate round of applause after the first movement!!! Then wait for the audience's final thundering applause at the concertos end!!!!

Fantastic playing and nothing more to add than many have already said. Beautiful sound, never pressed and musically very focus, never too much nor too little. I've heard many violinist who use this concert to break the violin in half and make every possible rallentando even more exaggerated. This guy plays dramatic and yet elegant, pure sound without forcing and yet a big sound too. Bravissimo!

Just loving his cadenza...listened to his previous recording with Strad many times, and now this with Leduc. This is an early recording with Leduc for him, and more recent recordings resemble human voices giving me goose bumps sometimes! German audiences are certainly spoiled. There’s no reason this performance shouldn’t have garnered an immediate standing ovation. The level of nuance was nothing short of astounding. The adagio: a full-fledged opera. Judging by the faces in the audience, you would have thought they were mulling over the latest international treaty. That’s because when Augustin plays, you feel you are listening to something just that important. His playing is worth an ear that is just that attentive. I have said it before - his playing has literally entered the realm of literature. He is so joyfully musical that everything seems to make sense when he plays it. The adagio of this violin concerto is an extremely disjointed piece of music - as is much of Brahms music. It’s extremely obtuse and awkward. Yet, Augustin made it listenable. In fact, I often have to force myself to pay attention to the adagio. With Augustin, I couldn’t turn away. The playing was full of suspense and intrigue. Bravo!
