I'm Muslim and we have the same level of orthodoxy in our communities as well. And the frustration around it..I get what Sarah's sister is saying. I totally understand what she's talking about. Especially the frustrations around women, particularly in the mosque. I want to sit with her for coffee one day.
@exquisitecorpse49176 жыл бұрын
I was atheist and converted to Judaism.....and it was the orthodox community that drew me in. There is so much beauty in the sound of prayer and the motions of devoted, daily religious life. A lot of that gets lost when you cross over to less stringent communities; they don't care as much, and it shows. I want to find a way to preserve the incredible power of a religious life without policing womens' bodies in the process.

As a coordinator of a program to help get foster youth through their education (the numbers of foster youth making it to graduation in California are dismal), I am so grateful for Rabbi Susan, and Sarah, and your message to people regarding the plight of our foster youth, especially the statistics of how many are just "dumped" as they age out, falling victim to sex-trafficking. In my tiny community, of the 14 teens that I personally worked with, three have been subjected to trafficking, and all before the age of 16. I hope this moves people to open their homes to provide a loving, SAFE place for these kids to be! Thank you, Rabbi!

It made me so proud to be Jewish. It made me sure that good Americans can save our country, even though some may live in Israel. Good will survive. It’s so interesting that Sarah & her sister were raised without religion but both ended up Jewish! I always thought Judaism was such a cultural thing so I thought Jews were mostly people who were raised Jewish. So interesting how people are so tied to certain religions! Good for Sarah !!!
@premanadi6 жыл бұрын
Her sister is a rabbi but Sarah is not religious at all. Being Jewish can be about religion, culture or ancestry. You can completely drop the religion, but you can't change your ancestry. And if it was your childhood culture, you will always relate to it on some level. Sarah said she was "Jewy," (which is a joke), meaning not religious but still has the cultural thing.

A lot of people (including at the start of this video) seem to make the mistake of using (a)theist and (a)gnostic as contradictory terms - that you're either one or the other. But they're actually complementary terms in the sense that they each make up part of a whole. Atheism and Theism relate to belief. If you believe in 0 gods you are an atheist. If you believe in 1 or more you are a theist. Agnostism and Gnosticism relate to knowledge. If you think that the existence of a god or deity can't be known for certain, you are agnostic. If you think it can be known, you are gnostic. The closest metaphor I can think of would be one of those old crime shows where the detective says "I know in my gut this guy is guilty but I don't have any proof". In this case the detective would be the equivalent of an agnostic theist (has belief but knowledge is not certain). So based on the brief detail at the start of the video, it sounds like both parents are agnostic atheists.

I’m not religious because I do t see the evidence but didn’t the bible say we were created in his image? And if we’re flawed and make mistakes then so is god. So who’s to say she isn’t right and that part of the reason we’re here is to help fix the mistakes he made and work toward a world of one people instead of this tribalism we have going on. Just saying if you believe in the bible or god then great but why would any god make the world this messed intentionally if he is perfect then he is an asshole. I think no matter who you are you should love thy neighbors. If everyone did that the world would be a way less fucked up place. I love that she is trying to spread understanding and love instead of the hate

It's not Fascism to have religious beliefs as an integral part of the government. Instead, I would call it a theocracy. What a strange way of thinking: "being God's partner". As a Muslim, that made me cringe. It's against the most basic Islamic Principle. So bizarre. Sure, humans can make a difference in the world when things are bad, but you don't have to be God's partner to achieve that. The reigning belief in Islam is that God placed us on this planet and that we are responsible for it as much as we are responsible for ourselves. We choose what We do with this responsibility, we can destroy the Earth and allow injustice and evil, or we can protect what is good to the best of our ability. And then we are all held accountable to how good or bad we were, then heaven, hell, everyone knows that part.

@kissit012 Yes, of course I'm familiar with the premise of spreading religion. I was referring to this video only. In no part of the video did Rabbi Silverman try to convert the viewers to Judaism. ok so firstly I'm a spiritual non practicing Jew living in Israel. Second its a bit of an extreme to say religious fascist, in your own words there the ultra orthodox. However, its not undemocratic, because the do represent a huge part of a community in Israel. Just because something is unjust doesn't make it undemocratic. Third and saddest part is the lack or responsibility of governments and society for a what is basically like neglecting them 10 million children.
