This is a good example of why poetry about people MUST be performed. You can read Shakespeare, and you can read Kay, but you cannot experience them until you witness the emotion, the human behaviors and expressions that give rise to words. Words do not fill your heart like they fill a page. Words fall out of our mouths, but they do not always speak to us. Kay knows how to speak to her audience, to cast a voice and give words lives of their own. I only discovered Sarah Kay by accident in my recommendations list Monday, and here on Thursday, I'm in love with the imagery her words call forth in my mind, a new vision of the world experienced only because she shared hers.

is it just me or like when she started to say "repeat the same mistakes over and over" at around 2:10, you expected her to say "repeat the same mistakes over and over again you'll stop calling them mistakes." I love seeing similarities in Phil and Sarah's works, their bond is evident even in their literature. Love their friendship :) so beautiful.

Hey! what i think she means is in her relationship they keep making the same mistakes and they seem to not be able to overcome them... so they "practice" (repeat again and again) but what they keep is making the same mistakes which have become a permanent aspect of their relationship ... thus, in this sense this type of "practice" doesn't make things better but it makes their relationship both painful and monotonous.. hope it makes sense to you xx

thus, in this sense this type of "practice" doesn't make things better but it makes their relationship require that practice again and again such that they are so reliant on each other, so habitual of each other, so in love with each other, that any other practice other than the normal practice is hard for them to digest........hence, it makes their bond even more strong and not monotonous, painful?maybe..

I wish this didn't describe my relationships. But it does. And it hurts. Beautifully said. I believe there are many who can connect to this and understand the pain of loving someone torn away from grasp by the distance of miles and miles. Whether it is a lover, a friend, sister, brother, mother, father... It is a sting that is humanly familiar, I believe.

This is the way Sarah Kay publishes her work. theres no way to write down her performance. it feels like shes not just finding words that sound good together and then shaping them into a story, I think her story comes first, and thats what makes her such a great poet.

Incorporated this into a speech I performed while in a long distance relationship, knowing damn well how true it was. If you’re gonna be in an LDR you need light at the end of the tunnel and meet up quickly. You run out of things to talk about and things become repetitive.

I dunno. I think that there are relationships that are not long distance that are far worse than long distance relationships because of lack of words. Words, or the lack thereof, reveal the soul. Words will caress our lovers far more effectively than our hands will.

"It is hard to build a body out of words- I have tried. We have both tried." Her voice is angelic and her words have true meaning. I really liked this one, but was a little distracted at the end by the little voice at the back of my mind, asking, "What happened to him??"

I don't think anything necessarily happened to him. They probably broke up, or decided not to be together. I think her poem "Private parts" is also about him.

The answer is given in the following parts of the poem, stating: 'You never get any closer...When we finally met on your couch, none of us with any words left to say...' but then 'there is a girl who still writes you, she doesn't know how not to...' When you spend so much time on a distance, drown in countless messages every day, you think that you know the person on the other side of the line and that you are getting to know them deeply. In fact, you are just falling deeply in love with how they present themselves to you, and become addicted to your perception of them. And finally, after so many messages, when the two of you meet in person, there is nothing left to say. It is wierd to communicate in person, as suddenly the person next to you is just a stranger. It is not the same person, it seems, who typed the messages. And you are not the same person that typed the messages you sent either. We all communicate differently online than we do in person, especially when we deeply care for the person on the other side. When the two of you meet, you are just two strangers, who cannot connect via the simple questions which you normally use to break the ice with someone you just met, as you know it all about the person already. Yet, you do not know THE person who is characterised by the information you have about them. 'You never get any closer...' And often, that moment of having nothng left to say at the couch represents the revelation that distance was not keeping the two apart, but that it was keeping them together. But once you leave the couch and separate with the other person once again, you miss them, as you are addicted to the messages. You do not know how to stop. You still write, cause you don't know how not to. 'Practice does not make perfect...practice makes permanent...repeating the same mistakes over and over...'

Natasha S. that's not always true. I'm in the US, fell in love with a guy in Europe. We had been messaging every day for hours for over a year when I finally got the opportunity to meet him in Europe. We spent an amazing few days together not using our phones and just talking and hanging out with each other. It was amazing. The hardest part is the distance keeping us apart 😔
