"Ben's Song" Lyrics:
On the hills of fire the darkest hour
I was dreaming of my true love's pyre
Who will bring a light to stoke the fire
Fear not for you're still breathing
On a winter's day
I saw the life blood drained away
A cold wind blows on a windless day
Hear the cry for new life the morning's flame
You were the brightest light that burned too soon in vain
Who will bring you back from where there's no return
Fear not for you're just dreaming
On a winter's day
I saw the life blood drained away
A cold wind blows on a windless day

This is purely coincidence but I am a nurse and am caring for a boy also dying named Ben...He is truly an angel, and helps me understand myself better every time I care for him. He is the Golden child of the end times, and once a child of my own in a past life. God Bless you my Ben, and Sarah's Ben now in heaven for coming to this earth and revealing your patience and love for God and us all through your illnesses. I'll be seeing you soon.

On June 15, 2006 I lost my best friend, my border collie, my Ben...my heart has never recovered from this loss...I leaned on the solace of listening to Sarah McLachlin over, and over, and over again while passing through the veils of sorrow...I cannot find the words to explain why I have never heard this song until today...Beautiful!...Thankyou, Sarah!

I saw Sarah sing this song in the tiny Belfry Theatre in Victoria when she was nineteen. She prefaced the song with a story about a young boy named Ben whom she babysat, and how he was ill and they didnt know why. He died of a brain tumour at age eleven. When she launched into the opening notes of the song it was riveting. Her voice filled the small theatre and I dont think there was a dry eye in the house by the time she was finished.

That would have been amazing. I heard her sing it when she was 19 on CBC. The interviewer ( I think it was Sheila Rogers ) could hardly speak afterwards. She said something like " Sarah, I want to go have a good cry...". At any rate, the song has been woven into my life in different ways over the years. And so has her other music.

@@robbpowell194 She told the story almost word for word at a small club in SF. Ben's Song is in my opinion her most emotionally gripping song. The back story makes it even more personal for Sarah. Ben as she said was the first person to die that she was close to as a young woman. We all can relate to those feelings and this song makes that loss so moving. Her performance that day was soul moving then and today.

I'm gonna brag for a second here, because i remember hearing this song on Muchmusic long before Sarah became the international star she has become. This song haunted me and I thought it was about the most angelic thing I had ever heard. This is from a guy who's favourite band is Metallica. Anyway, I always will remember this song and the feelings it brings. Simply a masterpiece. Glad to say I recognized it and it has always had an impact on me.

I also heard this on MuchMusic for the first time around 1989 when I was in grade 11 and it was... incredible. Nobody knew who Sarah McLachlan was! It was like an angel singing just for me. I bought the CD shortly afterwards and used to fall asleep listening to this album. I was transported to other worlds listening to this.

It was around '91 or '92 when I first heard it. I knew who Sara was because of "Touch" (and, being Canadian, she was being played as much as possible on local radio), but that first bar she sings stopped me dead in my tracks. I'd never heard something so pure.

I first heard you when you sang this song when you were about 19 years of age on CBC radio. It was mesmerizing then and it has only become more meaningful with time. It was on my son's playlist when he left this earth unexpectedly at 22 years of age. It was running through my mind when we lowered him into the earth on a cold December day, eight years ago. It is part of the soundtrack of my life. May God bless you...

I had never heard this one before and it is every bit as good as her later music. She looks about 23 or 24 in the video ... though I could be wrong. I have read some of the things she has written about her own music and the remarkable thing about Sarah ... and I think what touches us all ... is that you know she has felt pain and suffering in her life and survived it. Thank you Sarah.

That's all the book was about. All several hundred pages of it. A loved one coming up from behind you to put a coat on you, while outside, to keep you warm from the chills of the very cold weather in winter. And, the both of them cuddling each other tight; one lover behind the other, swaying a little.

Honestly I hadn't heard much of Sarah before and just heard an analysis by Fil of Wings of Pegasus and her song at Live 8. I saw a comment about Ben's Song and had to listen to it. Cancer is an ugly disease. I've seen it take away many people I care about. Along with guns and mass shootings...and other shootings that only lead to a mass. I should have been prepared. They are all tangled up in an emotion which is Blue. Her opening sounds opened up the flood gates. I like listening to Gregorian Chants when I need solace. This was a Gregorian Chant from the Angels.
