Her pianist says when she got into those low tones, the wood on those old concert hall floors just vibrated. She had a range of three octaves. There was only one singer with chops like that.

She was sassy and just delightful. You could feel her voice in concert, like you were part of the speaker system. She sang Where are the clowns and she reached higher and lower than seemed possible. We saw her in 1960 and then again much later in her career. Her voice developed a richness that you could almost feel. She was a stunning performer.

I was in high school at the time and had never heard her before the Wolf Trap broadcast. She had me spellbound in moments. I never forgot her name and have been a fan ever since.
