Sarah Vaughan - Lush Life - 12 july 1981 • World of Jazz

Sarah Lois Vaughan (March 27, 1924 - April 3, 1990) was an American jazz singer, described by music critic Scott Yanow as having "one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century."
Nicknamed "Sassy", "The Divine One" and "Sailor" (for her salty speech), Sarah Vaughan was a Grammy Award winner. The National Endowment for the Arts bestowed upon her its "highest honor in jazz", the NEA Jazz Masters Award, in 1989.

Amazing that those words were penned by Strayhorn when he was just sixteen years old. And yes, Sarah gives it the genius touch in a way that few can. It's hard to shake the memory of that last, lonely, unforgettable note....

Two incomparable geniuses: Sarah & Billy. The "word-smithing" in his lyric is stunning: "relaxes on the axis".....and Billy at all of 16, a love sick, black homosexual, burning with talent. And Sarah doesn't just "sing" Billy's song: she inhabits his mind, his feelings, his despair. Was there ever such a delivery!
