It's not just a beautiful performance, it's an intelligent one. She's restrained, but powerful in her restraint. She moves the melody around, but just enough to be engaging and not to sound like she's "jazzing it up." And her expression -- oh my. Her eyes convey such vulnerability and yet sophistication. THAT'S what it takes to be not just a talented performer, but a truly GREAT performer. Balance, a clear sense of where you're going and how you're going to get there and not one wasted move. Wow

Heart stoppingly beautiful rendition of one of Harold Arlen's most beautiful tunes. To take a song this well-known, and this closely associated with another performer, and to make it so completely one's own, while preserving and even heightening its essential melodic character, is a minor miracle. But then this is Sarah Vaughan, whose voice was among the most miraculous instruments in the history of American song.

Having listened to this dozens of times it's still impossible to overstate how strikingly definitive a performance it is. Once you hear this version of the classic Arlen & Yarburg tune--with all of its emotional force, lyrical nuance, and vocal power & precision--there is no going back; it's the one your ear will forever want to hear when those particular chords are played. To have done that with any great tune is an amazing accomplishment. To have done it with a tune that already had such an indelible and well-known performance associated with it, is nothing short of astonishing.
