I have always loved this song. I was only 6 years old when Sarah Vaughan hit # 6 in 1955 on Billboard. My mom and 12 year old sister played the 45 on the record player all the time. I now have a little Shih-Tzu named Lola. I didn't know if the name would fit her but it does more than you know. She is now 2 years old. You would think the song was written for her. Love my Lola and love this song.

Song based upon: Lola Montez, the stage name of a highly spirited Irish girl who danced her way to the tippy-top of world society in the 19th century. She picked up where Delilah left off - the very definition of femme fatale - leaving a string of powerful men destroyed in her wake, including a king. Wiki has a great write-up on her -- a very interesting slice of history -- putting some sweaty flesh on old dry bones.

This song was a big radio hit in the 50's. Though a boy, I recognized that it was definitely "adult" styling, quite a departure from the usual AM pap of Perry Como, Pat Boone, and Doris Day. More on Ms. Lola Montez: The title "Whatever Lola Wants" was inspired by the 19th century Irish dancer and actress Marie Gilbert, who adopted the stage name Lola Montez and found fame as a Spanish dancer, courtesan and as the mistress of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, who created the title Countess of Landsfeld for her. Forced to flee mainland Europe in the revolutions of 1848, as part of which Ludwig I was deposed, she went to London, then the United States, Australia and then the United States again, performing as a dancer and actress. Whilst in Australia, it is said that she performed her erotic Spider Dance at the Theatre Royal in Melbourne, lifting her skirts so high that it could be clearly seen by the audience that she was wearing no underwear, a performance described in a newspaper as "utterly subversive to all ideas of public morality". Another incident in Australia saw Montez, following an adverse review in The Ballarat Times, allegedly thrashing with a whip the newspaper's editor. Lola died on 17 January 1861 aged 39
