Omg yes! I watched a watercolor swatch video and one color turned from a beautiful cobalt blue to drying with a bit of berry red in it. I watched it and gasped at how beautiful it turned over the span of a few minutes.

NOTE: Regarding the brand comparisons & water usage. This is purely experimental to compare the TRUE consistency of each brand, which is only possible if I use the *same* amount of water for each brand. In a "normal" painting session with any single brand, you'd use as much water as necessary to get it to work. So don't take my experiment as the end-all-be-all answer. They are all great to be honest. My comparison shows the inherent quality of each consistency - it's up to you to add as much water as needed to get it to perform how YOU like it. It's nearly impossible to compare so many brands without nitpicking little things. Any of these would be a good purchase, and so much of it depends on your technique. And yes I realize I switched the alphabetical order of Schmincke & Shinhan ...my brain stopped working after endless days of editing/narrating 😂 Anyways...enjoy!

This is so good! Winsor and Newton are the first and only Gouache set that I've bought, I got them because of James Gurney, and they've been really nice! I'd be surprised if the honey based ones mold more easily considering honey is naturally antibacterial and as itself actually cannot mold or go bad.

Holy cow Sarah! Such a great review! Thanks for the time and effort. Listening to your thoughts while watching you paint the lovely coastal seascapes was mesmerizing. And I never realized until this video that you had a gouache database. Cool! My conclusions about brands were so similar to yours, so I was happy to hear that from a more prolific, experienced gouache painter. I was particularly interested in your flow and stickiness comments. I paint differently with gouache, using more water, much like I would transparent watercolor unless I specifically need the opacity somewhere, so those observations were also valuable. This will be a video I and many others will return to often I predict. Thanks again!

I'm so so glad you are reviewing Daler Rowney. It was hard looking for a review when I was thinking of buying them. It's one of the brands I can get my hands on very easily because they sell it in the art section of the bookstore in my city. Daniel Smith's are so expensive that buying just one tube feels like a splurge. It's hard to justify that for a hobbyist like me. But now that I get a validation (hahah) for DR I don't need to think about Daniel Smith anymore 🤣

I'm halfway into the video, and I just wanted to say, it's informative enough to help me gauge what gouaches would work for me. The feeling of working with the gouaches, opacity, swatches, mixing, wetness, a demonstration of how they work from the tube, as well as a full illustration to show the outcome, and pricing. Hi Sarah - thanks for this review. I can only comment of my experiences with Royal Talens, HIMI and Arteza gouache paints. I've been using Royal Talens for about two and a half years now. Arteza and HIMI were both trialled later out of curiosity and were both found wanting, particularly Arteza. What I have found interesting is that I haven't found any evidence of what you've described whilst using Royal Talens. I've found it to be really easy and creamy to apply and cover on many different surfaces with excellent blending and finished results. I realise that I'm not a professional artist, merely a very keen amateur. Even so, I find it fascinating that we've come to such polar opposites of opinion of the same medium. Bizarre.

Since I was doing a very specific comparison, I was using the same amount of water for all the brands (as little as possible) which showed me the inherent flow of each brand. This of course is meant to be an experiment to compare them all which is nearly impossible but I tried. In a more natural setting, adding more water than I did would make the Talens easier to use. Many of the comments here state this is the case. So you most likely added the appropriate amount of water to achieve that flow, which is good! Keep going!

Wow! That was quite something!! What a lot of work you put into this video! Thank you so much! I guess I am lucky that I live in Germany. I know about the oxgall in the Schmincke paints but I will keep using it.

I really liked winsor and newton and that one is the one i use, but in the US/Mexico(I Live in the border) is really expensive(17 dollars or more for series 4 paints ) i used to buy it at good price at Jackson art and get it shipped to me, but it seems now winsor and newton wont let them sell out of the US, So i might now try Shinhan and Schmicke since i can get them imported (in the US price are double for those too) Thanks for being a detective of gouache , appreciate all the hard work that goes into the videos it is a super useful resource for information and inspiration.

Thanks so much for this (and the student grade gouache) review!! It helps so much in understanding why certain paints were easy or difficult to work with. It will also help save me money as I was wanting to try Daniel Smith since it’s my fav watercolor brand but have been reluctant to buy it until it was more widely used/tested as it is not cheap. I’m looking forward to your mold test update as I’ve given up on the travel stay wet palette because of horrible mold issues (I live in a very humid climate so may be the reason?). My next thing to try is the Masterson sta-wet tray palette as it really works well with acrylics and acryl gouache. I keep it in the refrigerator and paints stay fresh for a couple weeks and don’t dry out when using. The trick is prepping it properly and there are some good KZbin videos on that which helped me get the right prep. I’ve purchased a separate one for gouache and am getting ready to test it out. Beautiful paintings BTW - your skill makes them all look effortless and gorgeous no matter the fussiness of the paint!

Thank you for spending the time on this video which is so informative and most useful to know. I used W&N Gouache exclusively for designs and was always happy with it years ago. Now I am looking forward to trying some Holbein Gouache after watching your review.

Wow, this was an amazing review! Thank you for all your hard work. I started with Holbein and really struggled with the paint to water ratio. Thanks to one of your classes I learned about Winsor and Newton and that was much easier. Now that I have a few years of experience, I have no problem with Holbein and love their colors.

Great reviews and paintings Sarah. I was particularly impressed by how you still gave an honest review of the Schminke even though it caused you moral questions. I only found your videos recently and have watched many since. Thank you for all your help. :)

Wow! Great video! This took a lot of time and discipline so kudos to you. I'm not even a gouache user but I love color theory. Lol. I started out with watercolors but think I would like the opacity of gouache better, which is why I started following your channel; I just can't justify starting a whole new medium at this point. Nice to know I have a wealth of information at my fingertips if I do decide to make the jump to gouache.

Awesome video! But I want to clarify the Schmincke Horadam is not per se the most expensive Gouache. Here in Germany (where it comes from) I pay less than half of the price you mentioned :) So it's the same price range as Daniel Smith and Holbein +/- :) Love your reviews!!! Thank you for this. Wanted to buy Daniel Smith Gouache so badly but I now won't due to your review, so I'm glad I don't miss out on something but also happy not have spent money to test myself. But want to try Shin Han though! :)

Good point! If you live near the source you probably pay much less. Kind of like how people who visit Japan can stock up on Holbein super cheap!

Shinhan! Yes!! Korean gouache~ I wanted their PASS version, but I couldn't order a set. So when I found their gouache line, I was excited to finally get my hands on some opaque water based paints! I usually use Holbein, but I gotta admit, the price point of the Shinhan line makes me feel much more free to experiment! I love the variety of colors available~ I use a Mijello Mission White because it is available in a very affordable 100ml tube! I see they have also launched their own gouache line now too. I'll have to use up more paint before investing in another line~ must be fun to try so many different brands 😁😅 Maybe not the Royal Talons. I am sure you get a lot of requests since they seem more affordable, but people will find they get what they pay for.....

I haven’t used my Davinci gouache in a long time. They are a few years old now. I think I will get them out and rewatch the video and test them out. It won’t really be fair but it will still be fun. (Because of age etc) I think I will contact them and ask about binders, etc. I really like their watercolor too. It just seems like there too many likable brands these days. Thanks for the videos and all your work.

thank you so much for this great review! And it is such a joy to watch you paint these beautiful sceneries😍 One word though to Schmincke Horadam gouache price issue: I live in Germany and Schmincke is a german brand. Here I would get the colours for 7,15 Euros for the white, yellow and blue and 11,75 Euros for the carmine, which is a different price group, buying them from an onlineshop named Gerstäcker, where I mostly buy my art supplies. So it probably matters most where you buy the paints. I really dont know why the price would be so high in other countries, since I get Winsor and Newton gouache for a decent price here. Also Schmincke has a Designers gouache as well which costs 6,02 Euros for 20 ml tubes, which performs very well too.

Thank you so much for this video! Thanks to you I upgraded my gouache to the Shinhan brand from the Himi jelly gouache. It is a night and day difference! So smooth and richly pigmented! I did find a Korean based seller on Amazon, so I was still able to get it in America. It’s at such a great price point, yet still delivers incredibly well performance-wise!

Sarah… I would really like to hear or read on your blog your opinion of Da Vinci Artists gouache. It’s made in California. One advantage is that you can buy it in larger tubes… 37 ml. They also sell titanium white and black in 150 ml tubes. Maybe Turner gouache as well?

I enjoyed it a lot, great painting along the way, each one better than the other. One thing: I was just trying to buy so.e and si ce most paints contain 15 ml, Schmincke does contain 20 ml. Which might explain the price difference. It is a quarter more in it. You are doing a great job Thank you for your time and effort
