Seems to me like a lot of painters have a small obsession with color mixing charts. I'm glad I'm not alone there haha. Doing the pastels on the one half is a brilliant idea... I've been trying to figure out how to limit redundancy in charts and that is a great way to handle it!
@SarahBurnsStudio Жыл бұрын
Alternatively you could mix black into half of it, which gives you some great earthy colors!

I've been loving gouache painting, and been really struggling on mixing colors and have even been on the fence buying bigger sets. I'm still going to shoot for a bigger set to upgrade, but I'm much more confident to practice on mixing, thank you!!

You don't really NEED a lot of colors... it's nice to have more convenience colors though. However I do strongly suggest mixing your own colors from the primaries while you are learning, it teaches you so much! Then once you feel better about it, it is easy to get extra colors.

It is oddly satisfying to watch you do this. I don’t know if it’s my arthritis or what, but your hands are very steady, comparatively speaking. Mine, not so much. This gives me great joy to see you make straight lines and square boxes!

Thank you for this video and the knowledge shared with your viewers. I am new to gouache and I have just started with making my color charts in this medium. I would have to say that any time you spend time getting to know the medium the better your results will be. In my case I went right to work creating a color chart with the 15 gouache tubes I recently purchased. It has taken me time, I'm almost finished and I have gotten to understand the characteristics of this paint. So time not wasted.

Great idea!! I’ve been in a painting slump (my husband had knee replacement surgery so my time is not my own right now and my head is really all over the place!). However, I think painting color charts just might be something to kick start me. I’ve been watching a lot of your videos on KZbin and patreon, and since you offer the free charts I’m going to give it a go. Thanks for the inspiration Sarah!

Thanks for showing the charts you use. Good ideas. 🙏🏼 On the gradient one, were you using just white to lighten the color or did you use more water too? The plein air painting was wonderful. When you showed the scene, I didn't see much and then you make a beautiful painting. It reminded me of when I did photography. I would lose my photographer's eye if it had been awhile since I'd been out shooting. It would take me a few hours to really begin to see things in the environment. There must also be a painter's eye. You definitely have one! 🧐
@SarahBurnsStudio5 жыл бұрын
On the gradient one, I'm adding more white, not water. You could do either - depending on your preference for painting. Some people like to use gouache more like watercolor by diluting it. I sometimes do that too. And thank you for your kind words! I know exactly what you mean :)

What is it about that color? I love it too. My love started with embroidery floss... I wish I had taken up painting sooner. I used to try and cross stitch things I wanted to make. Cross stitch is counting and ... I always missed up some color and refused to undo it and restart. Acrylic is much more fun. Watercolors and Gouache, oh my. Thank you for posting!

Did you end up making it to Jamaica? I was just playing with goauche this afternoon as I am new to it and what you say is so so true. Colors do look different from wet to dry. Really interesting, though I must say that I am already loving gouache. It is a whole new world. I am not big on social media, but are you on FB? I'd like to share some of my abstracts with you and get your thoughts. I am glad I found your channel. Love it.

Just curious to know why sometimes you use a palette and other times a piece of paper towel on a wet sponge (?) to mix your paints? Thanks
@SarahBurnsStudio3 жыл бұрын
Just depends on my mood and how lazy I'm being lol...setting up the palette with the sponge and paper takes like 2 extra seconds and sometimes I just want to dive straight in. It's always better with the sponge and paper!

Do you have to print the charts in a specific way so the printer ink doesn’t bleed on the charts? Really love this video and the attention to detail ❤️✨
@SarahBurnsStudio5 жыл бұрын
No, unless your printer ink is waterproof (which I doubt). Mine isn't, but the lines are so thin they don't dissolve much and remain visible. Especially with gouache.
@elysesimpson39995 жыл бұрын
Sarah Burns Studio Really good to know that the gouache doesn’t reactivate it too much. can’t wait to do these charts for the new year. I’ve seen some printer ink that’s waterproof but know very little about it. Thanks for the reply! Xo
@SarahBurnsStudio5 жыл бұрын
If it makes you feel better I make them all the time and never had any problems :) it barely bleeds with water, not enough to effective the color and reduce the effectiveness of the charts

What I am confused about... is that I know there are some basic colors that will affect how you mix to create your secondaries etc.. So there are different reds and different blues that will majorly affect how warm or cool those will be.. (regardless of your white)... I have a basic kit but I think I am going to have to just buy specific colors, rather than trying ot mix them. I think I am going to have to get another type of red and another type of blue... so I can get better colors. Just putting white in my green, comes out with a kind of flat MINTY green that was like bleh.
@SarahBurnsStudio2 жыл бұрын
Look into a split-primary palette. That will help. And yes certain colors are nearly impossible to mix. Having a turquoise blue on the palette really helps, as does a phthalo. Mixing white into a color will lighten it but also desaturate it.
@aremedyproject95692 жыл бұрын
I can’t figure this out when the colours are on an angle. I’m used to top row and side rows I guess. I’m new to gouache. Chemo brain maybe lol.

Red is a primary color, so you cannot mix it, you have to buy it. But you can make a nice version of red by mixing quinacridone magenta and Hansa yellow. Research “CMY” palette if you’re interested in doing that.
