"It was a Very Good Year" has always been my absolute favourite. Those lyrics, his performance and that amazing string section have never failed to move me deeply. I remember playing it on the stereo almost every evening when I was just 9 or 10 years old. Forty-five years later it still gives me goosepimples.

One of the most interesting insights about Frank Sinatra comes from an interview with 60s rock musician Graham Nash of Crosby Stills and Nash. He talked about how he got into music in the early 60s to oppose the music of artists like Sinatra. But he says one night after playing a concert in the late 60s and happened to watch a TV documentary about a Sinatra recording session. Nash said he was blown away by Sinatra's dedication and perfectionism. He was absolutely floored by Sinatra's commitment to his music.

@@bettystalling3435 that's why I'm in Vegas now. I've had cancer, osteoarthritis, macular holes in my eyes, kidney problems but I can still walk . Just enjoying excellent restaurants, playing the ponies watching wonderful shows like the Rat Pack is Back and Dita Von Teaze and just doing what I want. Better do these things before it's too late because you are physically incapacitated or just plain dead.

While the ages don't match up exactly I just very recently turned 70 and those periods are very true of many people. That is what makes this such a great song and Frank did it so well and only got better doing it as he aged. I just love listening to Frank and never have the time to listen as much as I like. Thanks for reacting to this. Loved watching you!

Frank was a bit before my time. Despite that, his voice is an enticing whisper upon your ears, melodic, soothing, and contemplative as it wraps itself around your inner-ear, as if it was a kindred sporit, just awaiting you to let it in. Onward to the hippocampus and amygdala, which activate emotional responses to music through memory; the limbic system, which governs pleasure, motivation, and reward; and the body’s motor system. All of those systems ticking your senses, allowing the beauty of his voice to permeate your very soul. Frank's voice is silken,as if made by the most talented weavers in the world, a gift only god could provide. Rest in Peace, Old Blue Eyes, and thank you for that voice from God....

I love this song. The Nelson Riddle arrangement is perfection. So I hope you know I mean no disrespect when I tell you this: I was in Vietnam in 1967. I made up obscene lyrics to this song, and when a bunch of us would get drunk I would sing it. Approval all around. Hey, it was Vietnam. But nothing can hold a candle to my favorite of Frank's songs.
@rockymountainjazzfan1822Ай бұрын
Actually, "It Was A Very Good Year" was orchestrated and conducted by Gordon Jenkins--like Nelson Riddle, a superb arranger and conductor.

Sinatra had it all, that awesome voice, that awesome phrasing, the charisma, the confidence, the swagger, he had EVERYTHING among crooners; the man had a GOLDEN voice. I STRONGLY recommend that you all listen to Sinatra's other wonderful songs like... "Wave," "Girl from Ipanema (with Antonio Carlos Jobim, he was the writer of the song and is playing the guitar as Sinatra is singing)," "You go to my head," "it happened in Monterey," "I was only a clown, why try to change me" among many others, he is absolutely AWESOME.

Great song with reflective lyrics. Frank Sinatra was such a smooth crooner. He has a huge library of great songs. Some of my favorites are "Fly Me To The Moon", "New York, New York", "Strangers In The Night", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "That's Life", "My Kind Of Town", "Summer Wind" etc. And he did a duet with his daughter Nancy called "Something Stupid" in 1967

Thank you, thank you for this reaction, Sarah. I think I recommended this song/video to you a while back.I believe that this is the very best Sinatra song. You can see the absolute professionalism of the man, ensuring that everything is right with the recording.....and his delivery!!!! Two things to notice from this video is the fact that he loved to perform in front of an audience, so he usually invited a few of his friends to sit in the studio during recording sessions. Also, the fantastic arrangement by Nelson Riddle and the performance by his orchestra, Nelson also arranged the best of Nat King Cole's songs, the outstanding one being 'Stardust'. Thanks again, a wonderful and insightful review.
