Sarah, you haven’t been scammed. You can get the password by plugging it into a device putting into recovery mode, which I forgot how to do but there is probably some tutorial online, and restoring the device. This will wipe the device. The only issue is, as far as I know, this only works with iPhones, iPads, and maybe the 2019 iPad touch. Another edit: You have to plug it into a device with iTunes (a computer or Mac, laptop or MacBook), and iTunes to restore it.

For the macbook you need to get a USB drive with a version of mac os that the macbook can run and try booting from the USB and install the mac os, after that u can take out the USB and u should be good to go

MacBook > Either the drive is dead, but also it could be that someone formatted the driver before pawning it to wipe it or removed the drive. Relatively easy/cheap fix.
