Yes, same for the Christian communities. Biblical names that have remained very popular in christian families (Elijah, Isaiah, Noah etc.) are very mainstream these days. Some cultures are offended when others use their religious/spiritual names when they are not affiliated with the community... Quick Reminder: You are naming a human being for their entire life. You are not simply naming a ‘baby’. Picking or not picking a name because of a trend line seems shallow and foolish.

It’s always a lifetime consideration when naming a child, but for those interested in statistics or worried about how the name will be received in ten, twenty years, a list like this is very fascinating. It’s just a fascinating bit of fun.

I think one of the fun/interesting things about more “traditional” names going out of style is that in five or ten years, naming your child something super traditional like Robert, Mary, Peter, or Anne will seem like a bold and edgy choice. I wouldn’t be surprised if within the decade there’s a swing back in popularity for more old-school traditional names that our parents had. Because if you named your daughter Mary right now, she’d almost certainly be the only one in her class.

I bet! Especially for these fast fashion names. I think it is just because people are getting tired of them, honestly. My children have DOZENS of friends named Caleb, Jackson, Hunter, Ethan, Logan etc. I know Jacob wasn't on the list but I know at least 15 Jacobs and Emilys. It's as though during that era people felt they had to choose from a very small pool of names, Michaela, Mikayla (etc) and Mackenzie being amongst them. I know dozens. I think that has led to the recent "unique" names, like Tinsley. IMHO, these will not age well. My daughter is at the age now where all her acquaintances are beginning to have children. She is also a preschool teacher. Here are the trends we are seeing: Luna, Harley and Harley Quinn, Eleven, Magnolia, Violet, Aurelia, and all the "ley" names. I asked my other daughter who teaches at the college level for contrast. She said she has a lot of Lauren, Cameron, Audrey, Aubrey, Gabrielle, Samantha, Amanda, Julia, Juliana, Eric, Noah students.

I don't want children but I love baby names (I'm nuts I know) but I definitely get wanting to have a unique name. Growing up I was always one of like 5 Jessicas in the class, my best friend's name is Jessica, my sister in law is named Jessica. It's just tooooo much. I wonder though if in 100 years Jessica will come back in style.

I really enjoyed this list, SJ!! I think I’m one of a few people who DESPISE popular names- if a name is in the top 1,000 then I don’t want to use it (I’m not planning on having kids until I’m in my 30s and I’m currently in my mid-20s), but I guess I’m weird that way! I’m from the Deep South (Birmingham, AL) in the States and it’s really traditional here to name a daughter after the mother or the son after the father- it’s also REALLY traditional here to use the mom’s maiden name or a family surname as a first name for a girl (or a boy) and sometimes it can also be common to name a daughter after her dad (I know- super weird, but the girl names James, Murray, Sullivan, Collins, etc are names that came out of this!) So I guess some of those name choices might be why I love super duper unique names!!! Hugs! Been watching your lists since 2017!!

As a teacher I always wanted to name my daughter an unpopular name, but not too strange. Once I found out a name was booming it came off my list. I picked out a name in high school that I eventually named my daughter. I still love it and every year she is the only one in her grade with it. So mission accomplished. However I checked recently and it has crept on to the top 1000 here in the USA. 😢

I am super happy that names are cycling in and out of fashion quickly! It gives more opportunity for parents to be original, and kids can grow up with more name variety among friends and, later, colleagues! Maybe our conference rooms will cease to be filled with several Andrews, Daves and Jessicas! 😂😂😂

Most surprisingly “new and trendy” names I’ve heard lately: Grayson- - every other boy was called this a couple of years ago. Peyton- only ever heard one baby girl called this? Were her parents behind or ahead of the trend!? Has SJ made a video on place names for babies? I know a Jackson (age 9) and a Jaxx (under 9 months) So that seems to be reflected here.

It's important to keep in mind that going down in the charts may only mean that different names are overtaking them in popularity, not that people find them outdated yet. Of course, as people mentioned, people are always looking for unique and different names so the top names will always change, but that doesn't mean the names that were previously the top are now unpopular, just not quite as popular. It seems that all of the names you mentioned are still super high in the charts!

You said something SJ “more of a big brother name” & it made me wonder if the names that were so popular fave years ago that so many were using are on the decline because the same mums that were having kids then are having more and can’t reuse them? Does that make sense? So if I have a Jake and so do 5 or 10 friends then two years later when I’m having another boy (and they are too) we’ll be making another name popular (Oliver, lets say) while Jake moves off the charts...

Hey SJ! I love your videos. I have a few questions about names. What middle name would you pair with Adelaide and the last name Cox? Also, how do you feel about Azariah? And last question, my sister loves Clarence with the nickname “Clare” for a girl to honor our grandfather. Do you think that’s too masculine? Thanks in advance!!!
@MichielBLKorte4 жыл бұрын
I don’t think Clarence is too masculine, especially with Clare as a nickname, which is very traditionally feminine. I really like Adelaide Mae, Adelaide Esther or Adelaide Louisa. Other options: Adelaide Gabrielle Adelaide Genevieve Adelaide Margot
@Abbytix4 жыл бұрын
Adelaide Rose / Mae / Maileen / Ina / Hope / Penelope / Colette / Odette Adelaide sounds like a vintage name to me, so I'd choose something sweet that's also vintage. Though you could mix vintage and rock - like Adelaide Roxie. I also like looking at names that have the same meaning as someone who means a lot to you for middle names. Could be your parents, grandparents, best friend, etc. I personally like Azariah, and think Clarence would be cool for a girl!
@looch11124 жыл бұрын
I absolutely love the name Adelaide, I think it would go super well with rose, snow, Josephine, mara, moira, Mona or even Lou! I think Clare is a super cute nickname and very feminine, there is a netflix series with a Clare in it and she's super cute
@katie22954 жыл бұрын
A name is as masculine or feminine as you make it, go with what is important for you and worry less about others as they aren’t naming your baby. There are plenty of unisex names so go for Clarence if you love it - maybe a middle name is a good compromise though? I went to school with a girl called Azaria (though spelt differently) and I remember her well purely because her name is so unique. Arrietty might also be a great choice, it’s a more feminine name but with a really strong meaning of eagle star or lion star. I know you asked SJ so feel free to ignore me but I had some middle names in mind 😂 Adelaide Rae would be lovely but would spell ARC as initials so depends if that bothers you. I also like Kate, Pearl or Belle as middle names for you. Something short would offset the length of Adelaide quite well I think.
