I once had a flute teacher who kept using sports metaphors...I'm not athletic or sporty...that's why I joined band LOL Whenever I had to hold a long tone he would call it a "football throw" and compare it to throwing the winning pass...you want to keep the ball in the air until it reaches your teammate in the end zone. He also thought everybody wanted to play first chair in the Chicago Symphony. For me it was a hobby and I just wanted to be a better player.
@ekkisoatima24494 жыл бұрын
Very fun. :) I would add two from my experience: 1. The Chatter - this teacher just wants friendly conversation for most of the lesson before saying, "Oh, look at the time. Well, let's run through a scale exercise or two before you go."... Then collects his check... 2. The Shamer - tries to guilt you into doing better or practicing more by making comments on how you're not trying hard enough. Different from whiplash because everything is said with deep disappointment, never anger.

The chatter for sure. I've had one who talked half of the lesson about random stuff... and I had to pay for it haha

The overly descriptive teacher was completely hilarious. My recorder teacher was a mixture of many of these types, but she was absolutely never apathetic. Hurrah! My fiddle teacher probably has a greater proportion of encouraging teacher and less backseat driver - she prefers to give me my feedback either by telling me after I've stopped playing or by playing along with me and throwing some fairly heavy-handed hints at me by the way she's playing and a series of increasingly urgent glares. It's probably hilarious, but it works!

The ukulele was the last straw. I couldn't keep the laughter back. And all because I was working with my daughter on practicing her soprano, and my son came in with his ukulele. Yeah, I tuned it to play in C on an open chord, which he does nicely at the age of two. We had a little Partridge band going. :-) I've experienced teachers like these stereotypes, so I get it. Wow! You two nailed it, but kept it amusing. Thanks!!!!

This was great .You're always so entertaining Sarah.I studied Classical Percussion in NYC with a legendary 20th Century Percussionist-Titan from 1979-1984.The best analogy to express what Percussion Ensemble rehearsals were like with him would be the first 45 minutes of Kubrick's"Full Metal Jacket".The fear in the room was palpable.We would often spend 2 hours on 1 measure.Keep up the great work and enjoy your summer.

I had a teacher once, she was a type 11, the I am a renowned professional musician, it's so beneath me to have to teach between concerts, and only ever focused on the stronger students in class, picking songs to their ability every time and saying to the weaker ones you'll have to sit this one out. I'm not sure how she kept this job which was so beneath her.

I love this video. I know all of them lol. Miss the teacher who wants to explain absolutely everything and never shut up, and never allows the student to speak, only wants to monologue. Like the "Show off" not playing but speaking about everything, maybe because they never have play good enough for themself. And they live with it but never have talked about it. Also miss the kind of teacher that never pay attention to students not because they are "apathetic" but they are continuously thinking in anything else.

I once went to see a teacher about starting the Viola. He spent almost an entire hour trying to get me to agree to spend £3000+ on a Viola, didn’t even bring out an instrument or ask me about my goals. He then threw me out of his house when I said I couldn’t afford to spend more than £30/week for an hour’s lesson. That was... not the best musical experience I’ve ever had.

you forgot the not move teacher! She made me crazy, I should stand still as a military guard, while playing the recorder. It was really like recorder military drill.

I think different students/ lessons call for different types of teachers and combinations (maybe not the apathetic though!) Years ago, I had a voice teacher who was known to sometimes do her nails during lessons... so disrespectful. I've come across all types, and I've learn from them all, even "what not to do" from the bad ones! lol. As a teacher I'd like to think I'm a bit of them all, but I fail miserably at beat boxing! ha ha

Aha!... I've been expecting this one! :) The encourager is the one I prefered (love your facial expressions!). I can still think of a talkative teacher (about everything besides the class subject), a "I don't give a shit" teacher, an overconfident and an underconfident teacher, a forgetful or clumsy one, a super organized one, the teacher that always wants to play the strangest pieces... Cheers! :)
@paulg015 жыл бұрын
I had a classical guitar teacher when I was about 9 or 10 who took apathetic to the next level - absent. I had my lessons at her house and she’d tell me to start playing a piece then leave the room. I could hear her moving around upstairs! Eventually she’d come back, tell me to repeat it or play another piece, then disappear again. I think I was too young to realise how ridiculous it was, but I gave up after a few months as (obviously) I wasn’t making much progress. I never did learn the guitar...

I like watching these to see which one I am...probably a cross between overly encouraging and overly descriptive. "Imagine you're a spider playing Frogger to get across the road before you go back to hunting flies" may or may not be a quote from a lesson this week (major key section of Burgmüller op 100 no 20 if there are any pianists in the audience).
