My soprano fingering sheet says that there is another way of playing the D7... it’s way easier but I‘m not sure if it’s the same exact note, though I think so. It’s 0-1 34 6

Good info, but you go way too fast even at your slowest pace. Beginners can't keep up because we're not used to a numbering system, and to try to follow what your fingers do is too hard to do that quickly. The other thing that's really frustrating is that this stupid thing can't keep from squeaking even though the proper holes are all covered. That's the one reason I didn't stick with this instrument after being forced play it in 1st grade. Dumb thing can't hold a note. Never mind.
@rickmccloy4201
@rickmccloy4201 Ай бұрын
@justrosy5 If a recorder can't produce a tone clearly, obviously either the recorder or the player is to blame. It fortunate that we live in an age when recorders are so rarely faulty.

So glad I found your early KZbin videos on how to play a recorder. You are such an inspiration and so very talented in all the recorders you have learned to play through your young years. I am 69 years old and just purchased a Yamaha Soprano Recorder Baroque (Ecodear) YRS-402B, after watching your video, choosing a PLASTIC recorder! What a challenge it has been but enjoyable at the same time. I plan to use the soprano recorder for worshiping at home. A lot of your videos are very informative and way over my head but I thank you for encouraging those of us who have never played before. GOD bless you Sarah and your family.

Like many of us, I too learned the basics of the recorder when I was a kid and then let it go for no particular reason. Now, just for fun in my late 30's learning piano, recorder and drum. Thank you so much, Sarah. your explanations are perfect and your vibe just makes the whole practice lots of fun!

You put what I like into such articulate words. Even though I'm a low brass player, I bought me a tenor recorder cuz that's just so cool how simple it is. Unfortunately, the physics of brass don't allow for such simplicity (except the trombone, which I own) but that's ok. 3/4 valves is pretty simple
@thpeti

That's one reason why I didn't like the clarinet. Because its fancy keys instead of the simplicity of the recorder. Just practice a bit more, and You will never need any keys for the sharps/flats like on other woodwinds...

I just wish that when I was a kid someone had told me that the recorder was a real instrument with lots of wonderful music, and not just a stepping stone to 'proper' ones such as the clarinet or even the violin - I would never have stopped playing the tenor recorder. But I am feeling slightly freaked out by some of those high notes on the descant!

Guys, for the soprano fingering of D#/Eb in the second octave, I copy pasted the wrong text! (this was a very, very long video to edit and my brain evidently had a momentary holiday). The correct fingering is 23456. In the video my fingers, the notes on the stave and sound are all correct, the text is just wrong. Thanks to those who pointed this out!

I used to play the flute about 10 years ago and haven't really kept up with music since. It's something I've been wanting to do for a while but couldn't justify spending all the money on one right off the bat. Then I found your channel and even though the recorder is not the same as the flute it's the perfect instrument to get back into music from the foundations up. Thank you so much for all these videos! Hello Sarah, thank you for your inspiring videos ! I’m starting the alto recorder after 30 years of saxophone alto. I wanted to play ancien music . I’ve followed musicology studies in university so it makes me feel like playing Bach and the other ones ! For the moment I just have a Yamaha which is not totally in tune but I save money to buy a good one ! I’m following the Jean-Claude veilhan method who wrote specifically for Baroque’s music ! I wish you a lot of joy and luck in your job and thanks again for the videos ! Aurélie

Idk, Bach with sax is pretty awesome too. Some great recordings have been shared to YT last few years. For why modern instruments adapt so well for Bach and the rationale behind that, go back to "a question of instrument" by monsaigngeon. I wish I had a musicologist's background to understand the nuances of those types of interviews. But I am all for Bach on recorder too of course!

Hi Sara! I found 38 sounds and 3 registers in each of the 5 flute recorders I have in my own, all of them are Yamaha and in each flute I use as well different clefs. For example: In the Tenor recorder I play it with the brand new D clef. With the Alto Recorder I use the brand new A clef. With the Soprano recorder I play the brand new E clef. With the Sopranino Recorder I play with the brand new B clef. And with the smallest Recorder I play with the brand new E clef. I'm very happy to share my discoveries with you. I plato the G clef for the first scale of the Tenor recorder and with the alto recorder also I can play the first scale with the new D clef, and the soprano recorder I can use the A clef in order to play the first scale. Greetings from Mexico City!

Wow, this is great. My last lesson was over 30 years ago and we had never gone past E, in the second octave. And I had learned to play this even earlier more than 35 years ago. Then while just playing as a hobby at rare times, I had discovered by myself that I could go down to A. Now after all those years, I watched Csardas by Victor Borge and Michala Petri and saw she went beyond that. I didn't think this was possible! So I looked around and saw that it was indeed possible! Yay, and thank you! :)

this is actually extremely helpful. As someone who can't read music, wants to learn a few things on the recorder and already plays guitar. I can easily find a song played on flute/recorder (such as the solo in nights of white satin which is what I wanna learn) and transcribe it note for note from watching someone play it on the guitar, writing down the notes; note for note, and finding how to do each one here. If not for you I'd be screwed. I cannot read music, don't have the patience to learn (or motivation more accurately), and there are NO tutorials or anyhting like that on the flute solo part of that song. There is also no note for note transcription that I could understand (understandably). It's gonna be a pain in the ass to do but you even took a lot of that pain away to your own ass by actually linking each note in the description. You're an ass saver! THANKS! SERIOUSLY!

I've been keeping a cheap recorder disassembled in my little leg back i take everywhere "just in case" (i'm a music major but the only time this has helped was assembling it and getting a can unstuck from a vending machine admittedly, but it's fun to tell people "just in case" and create confusion). I recently decided I'm going to start pulling it out, and going "Wanna see how fast I can play 'Hot Cross Buns'?" and then actually playing the intro to "Welcome to the Black Parade" by My Chemical Romance. Long story short, I think hearing how the higher octave is supposed to sound in this video is helping me read this fingering chart, since I have to start at written G5 since the recorder I have doesn't go below wrriten C4 and there's a B3 in the line. Thanks!

Thank you so so much for posting this! A man gave me a handmade kind of recorder made from cane wood/plant, but it only had the six main holes, not the 0 and the 7 ones. I easily picked up melodies (I am a guitarist and pianist so I am familiar on playing music) but I couldn't figure out how to play a chromatic scale and fit in any note I wanted, so I thought it had limited notes, and not the whole 12 notes of an octave. I still cannot play some notes because I don't have the 0 and 7 holes so I obviously can't do the thumb or pinky thing. But THANK YOU because I didn't know that covering the half of a hole changes the pitch of a note, this is extremely helpful and now I can play a bunch of new melodies!

Oh wow. I never knew my beloved recorders could hit THIS many notes! This video is amazing. I've been pausing it constantly to practice each note and make sure I actually hear MYSELF right and not Sarah's amazing playing. My soprano recorder does not have those double holes anywhere, but it's an Original Herwiga Chor, so POSSIBLY from the late 30s or 40s? If my google search (which gave ONLY German results) is good enough. I really like this recorder, but I canNOT reach that last high octave no matter what! I'll try again sometime my landlords are not home, so they don't....idk, evict me or something because of the awful noise XD I'm out of practice with my alto recorder, so my hands hurt now, and I really struggle with getting a clean sound on the lower notes! Hi Sarah! I saw this video again and I did some important changes and necessary corrections in my first and second comments based in my next statements: well, when I play the Tenor recorder I use the G clef to play the first register and the brand new D clef to play all the 38 notes. So now when I play the Alto recorder I use the brand new D clef to play the first register and the A clef to play all the 38 notes in the Alto recorder. In the Soprano recorder I use the A clef to play the first register and the brand new E clef to play all the 38 notes. Thank you for your nice videos. They helped me a lot to work in this clef project. Greetings from Tijuana Mexico!

Ears ringing is a sign of hearing damage being done. Playing a (short) high note inside of a tune is one thing, but trying to learn it for any length of time quite another. Please use proper ear defenders to learn the high notes, tinnitus and overly sensitized hearing that hurts at some frequencies (oww) is no joke. Ear plugs are not sufficient here, but you can wear them WITH the defenders. Also to save your neighbors ears: drive to somewhere out of earshot of civiisation and play inside the car. For extra fun, get a decibel app and check out how loud you can get! (a tuning app also is useful when learning this)

So about 3 months ago I decided to learn the recorder and since have got pretty good at playing a lot of songs but only the ones that don't involve those two double-holed bottom holes. I could never seem to reach them properly and they were just so annoying and awkward. I tried looking at various fingering charts and stuff but whatever I tried I still could not play those low Ds. Desperate, I decided to watch this video and the first thing she says is hold the left hand above the right.... Turns out I've been playing left handed all this time even though I'm right handed and everything I learnt was fucking pointless!
@Team_Recorder
@Team_Recorder 7 жыл бұрын
+TheTree0fDeath Ahhh! But don't worry, it's not all pointless- with a bit of practice you'll get used to the other way around quickly, and you already practising the blowing/articulatio /note reading etc a lot. That counts for something! 💪🏼

@Team_Recorder
@Team_Recorder 7 жыл бұрын
That's also fine! Bb has multiple fingerings - 0134 is slightly lower that 01356, so use whichever is more in tune for your instrument or situation.

0134 is the fingering I more commonly use too. I think it's what the fingering chart that comes with all the plastic Yamaha recorders says. Though as with most cross fingerings, exactly which and how many fingers I use depends on the instrument and musical context.

Toby Teng I was asking the same thing. I pick up my Recorder (Yamaha YRS 312B) and played both in the turner. The 01356 Bb sounded a very little higher from the right pitch. The 0134 sounded a little bit more closer to the Bb frequence.
