Notice how Jane asks Lisbon whether she's mentally alert at the beginning by ensuring her focus on the present moment and then he asks her to choose a basic shape by doing so Jane limits her options and then Jane proceeds to capture her concentration with soothing voice and then planting shapes in her head by using his hands and fingers, notice how he forms a triangle first and then circle next and successfully implant the shape in her mind and now for the final touch he asks her to project that shape behind his head while noticing her eyes and double checking his trick and then he reveals it. Damn, mentalist is so damn good and underrated.

The way she’s staring at him. Plus the way he uses his hands. @1:20 where he says “now I have access to all of your inner most thoughts” and she went yeah right. And then he almost got her to admit it was about him and she starts blushing. Sean Barlow outs her in front of Jane, it really shouldn’t have been that big of a surprise. If you watch the 100th episode where he works with them for the first time. At the end she’s stops at the couch and just watches him sleep. There’s a lot of episodes where it hints at a slow burn for them before they actually get together. The one where he’s got amnesia and comes on to her, is one of my favs.

@@dalangie actually, I'm pretty sure The Mentalist helped make Simon Baker more memorable and liked in American audiences, (besides the show, people only seem to recall his smaller role in The devil wears Prada) but he and Tunney were never really blockbuster-famous actors despite being talented and successful in their own right. Neither of them are or were failures in any sense of the word, nor did it stop them from starring in films during work on the show. Baker left for Australia when he was done because he wanted to go home/pursue efforts in the Australian film industry with directing as well as acting. Tunney is as busy as she always was here in America. The Mentalist remains loved by all its fans, got Baker a Hollywood star, and here we are now years after it ended still talking about it. I think it more likely increased their fan base and marketability. I seriously doubt it hamstrung some blockbuster contract they would have otherwise signed--if that were going to happen in their careers it would have been around their efforts in Empire Records or Land of the Dead.

The way this works is first his use of the words "shapes." For most people that will trigger thoughts of grade-school lessons of basic geometry-- triangle, circle, square, rectangle, and so on. The second big part is that he is actually asking you to picture three shapes. The first is the "screen," which he draws in the shape of a rectangle. And then by telling you to imagine "not a square" he's eliminated two of the four most common choices people will make, essentially turning infinite combinations into a 50/50. The rest of the priming comes from holding his hands first like a triangle and then drawing a partial circle.

@liameneuk3 жыл бұрын
It was his gestures. He suggested a triangle by the fingers and then a circle by the movement of his palms. He also directed her to not use a square and so it basically limited her to triangle and circle (I know there are other shapes but tbh, triangle, square and circle are the easiest 3 to come to anyone's mind). The fun part to me is that I thought pulling off a trick like this would be easier on people who are of lower alertness, however he did the opposite by asking her to alert so that his gestures would be read into her mind.

The hand gestures are merely supportive. The primary principle is the fact that most people don't know the name of other shapes off the top of their head. While others will have to think about them even for a split second; and tricks like this keep you on your toes not allowing you to dig too deep in your memory. You then remove square from the options; and triangle and circle... No one puts a circle inside a triangle it's too hard to fit it. Although if you don't remove square the options become way more.

well, we tend to come up with things that are familiar to us. the most familiar geometric shapes, since we are kids, are triangle; circle and a square. now, when you are told "choose a shape that is not a square" you are likely to choose one of the other two. note that he drew a square when telling her to choose a shape, that caused her (and you) to draw the the chosen shape in your mind, and a triangle is easier to draw than a circle.

The trick here is that when you try to project an image the eyes trace the shape, having removed a square the only option left for a four sided shape is a rectangle but most peeps go for a circle and a triangle because they associate the elimination of the square with the elimination of any four sided shape. Any shape with more than four sides is a little harder to picture which is why most people go for three sided or one sided shapes ie triangle and circle. Now the first shape they trace is usually the outer shape so simply track the eye movement to figure out which is the outer shape. The hands focusing to the back of his head is a trick to get her to focus into his eyes but not be uncomfortable with him staring back. Of course there are many uncertainties involved with these things but it should work most of the time. In any case if they try to picture a shape with more than four sided it would usually be a Pentagon or hexagon, anymore is terribly unlikely so you'll have to observe very carefully if the eyes make sharp movements which may indicate a five or six sides.

The people who didnt get a Circle inside of a triangle werent paying enough attention. Its called the art of suggestion. He is suggesting the shapes he wants you to imagine with his hands and excludes square which is one of the shapes ppl normally imagine as well.
@aaronsmith79463 жыл бұрын
No. First, people go with triangle because, while he says "like a square but not a square," they can still choose rectangle. The reason a vast majority don't is because they do not want to, on a basic intellectual level, be visually redundant in their head. Second, those who didn't get a circle inside a triangle isn't because they weren't paying enough attention...it's because they are just not as easily manipulated as others. Finally, the other reason circle and triangle end up in most peoples minds is because it is simple to visualize and that is the part where most on this comment section are lying. For example, the people who claim they visualized a decagon inside an icosahedron are liars. Not only would visualizing that inside a screen be ridiculous enough but then trying to burn it into his head would have been something most people could not do whilst at the same time paying attention to his instructions.

Most basic shapes - circle, square, triangle, rectangle. Square was off the charts. Left with 3. If square was off the chart, anything resembling a square was also mentally off the chart. Which leaves us with circle and triangle. There’s more of a probability of a circle encapsulating a triangle than vice versa according to basic imagination. Hence. I mean - when anyone says basic shape, who would think of a frustum or a cone. I played safe and thought of a parallelogram. Hehe

This is such a good trick and it really works! Just tried it on my mum and she was so shocked. I think the reasoning for this is that when you are told to think of "a basic shape. Like a square" you obviously first think of a square, then the "but not a square" makes you think of something else but subconciously you think of something similar. Now my guess is that the fact that a square is a Kiki shape couple with him sneakily placing a triangle in front of you with his hands makes you think of a triangle. Then when he gestures a circle at the same time as he says "now picture another shape AROUND the first one" you think of a circle! It's a brilliant trick however it probably doesn't work twice.

Yup. Exactly this. Mentalism isn't about actually reading people's minds it's subtly planting ideas to make people do certain things. Like inception without the dreaming. Jane really is a "master manipulator"

Even without the suggestion, most people pick those shapes. Square, triangle and circle are the most common shapes, "not a square" counts one out, and a triangle is more like a square than a circle.

@@EllawoodBlues The hell are you talking about? You can't make people think of triangles by making a weird triangle with your hands. That's not at all how this trick works.

I chose the same shapes, which at first impressed me. On thinking about it, though, I had settled on a triangle after consciously abandoning a more complex shape like a pentagon because a triangle is easier to visualize in the mind, and has straight sides like a square, but isn't one. A circle is also easy to visualize, especially when paired with a straight sided shape because it is simple and distinct from it, and it is often what one uses to encompass something because it is quick to draw. I wasn't paying attention to his hand gestures so my selection was not guided by suggestion. It had more to do with mental economy (laziness if you prefer) than mentalism.

No one's paying attention to his hands, it's unconscious, that's the trick bruh

And I'll bet you don't think advertising works on you either :eye-roll: People "not noticing" the hand gestures is precisely what makes it work so well. (Jane is even training the marks to follow his gestures without considering them important, by the way he draws the "screen" first.)

he drew a square screen with his hands and asked her to imagine a shape, obviously she would imagine a square, he said imagine a shape like square but not a square, that is obviously a rectangle, he said imagine another shape that surROUNDS this shape, ...circle, boom mentalism, he just manipulated her
