I could not find a cute lightweight daybag that I liked so I put a zipper into a cute, super lightweight shopping bag for a daybag/overflow bag. @@karenhenry5806 All you need is a straight stitch and you can sew almost anything! Find a local sewing machine dealer and ask about basic classes, or meet the teacher. Even if you don’t end up doing the sewing yourself, they’ll know people to recommend who can do these simple things for you! I spent years doing alterations on the side of my day jobs (including being a sewing teacher lol) and adding a zipper or some secret pockets would’ve been no big deal and not much $$. Also, save or thrift anything out of tech fabric, like old packing cubes, rain jackets or backpacks - they’re great to use for really lightweight, durable scrap fabric for those pockets and such!

Finally, someone who addresses the weight issue!! Thank you!! Have been binge watching packing videos of late; ex cabin crew here so I am fairly experienced vis a vis packing but always game to learn something new. Have been marveling at how people can cheerfully chat about packing for 10/20/30 days hand carry only and not once mention that cabin carryon for most airlines has a limit of 7 (kg in my part of the world) and everywhere I’ve travelled they have more often than not, actually weighed pax hand carry. In Manchester airport once they weighed, at check in and AGAIN just before boarding…….. Really enjoyed your video and I appreciate the no nonsense approach. Thank you😊

Hi, love that you did a deep dive into feminine hygiene. I wonder why you bring seven underpants when you are washing them out each night? I travel with only four and wash one out each nigh! Not much space savings but a bit. Also, on most of the travel tip videos everyone seems to be going to warm climates. What about packing for colder places?? Would love to see weight and space saving ideas for those countries.

Besides trying on your clothes I would recommend actually wearing for a while in a real life situation. On my last trip, a cruise, I had a dress I had been saving for such a situation. It worked when I tried it on. But actually wearing it was a total disaster. Luckily I had a really large shawl for cover.

Wonderful video and tips. A tip is to practice lifting your carryon bag over your head. I believe you said this on the RS series. My story is that my husband who did most of our lifting hurt his shoulder while skiing. I was able to lift the bags to the overhead bins on planes, trains and busses. Look forward to your next videos. Shoes are hard because everyone has different feet, issues. But there NO faster way to ruin a trip than with the wrong shoes.

What a great video! Thank you! I especially appreciate the tip about weighing things … it honestly never occurred to me! I was only concerned that I could fit everything in the suitcase and still close it! 😂 PS I did do a couple really smart things on a recent trip to Europe… I only filled my rolling carry-on suitcase halfway and packed a large empty Lug duffel bag inside. On the way back, I checked the rolling suitcase and carried my duffel. Also, I have a zip up tote bag from Aloha that is made to take to the beach and carry wet swimsuits, and I used that as my carry-on purse. It is super lightweight and I figured I could always pack it and carry on a large leather bag if I bought one in Italy. It was also useful as a shopping bag during the trip.

After traveling the globe the biggest lessons for me- always bring OTC medication. I’m migraine prone and was told Italy has everything at the pharmacia. Well you need to be near one and it has to be open. The hotels aren’t allowed to hand out Advil and the petro station won’t have it. Also Anatomie pants weigh nothing and dry in about an hour. I wear them when not traveling since they’ve held up for years. Working in Dermatology, spf clothing is a must and daily spf of 30 or more liberally applied outweighs any makeup decision. I get a tinted Zinc based spf 50. Powder spf provide too many skip areas to be effective. My 2 cents. Love these videos.

Sarah, have you ever looked into the Macabi trekking skirts? They are my go-to bottom: midi length, full, capacious pockets and zip security pocket, quick drying. They are cooler than pants or capris but you can wear leggings underneath if cold (or knee socks and silk short johns). I had red wine spilled in my lap in Sicily and just mopped it up with napkins and didn’t even have to wash the skirt! I carry my sketch/watercolor kit in a pocket since I love travel art journaling-glad you recommend that.

LUGGAGE TIPS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Tie three or four colored ribbons around the handle to your luggage to warn others that this is not their luggage. People grab luggage at the turnstile and take it home before you ever see it. Anywhere you put your bag, it could be grabbed in error. Example: overhead compartment, unloaded from the bus, at the hotel lobby, at the airport turnstile... These ribbons make your luggage different and EASY TO SPOT when the piece is surrounded by 35 other cases unloaded from the bus. Using 4 ribbons make it immediately different than other cases with 1 ribbon. Use 1” wide ribbons 14” long and not longer. Cut the ends at 45 degrees. Tie the ribbons as a sandwich, as if they were one ribbon. Use a man’s tie, a half Windsor knot for the best look. After it is tied on, the total length of the ribbons will be about 5 inches from the handle. This is too short to catch on anything such as rollers. Scissor cut trim the ribbons to cascading different lengths after they are tied. Put a drop of Super Glue at the end. If each ribbon is slightly a different length by 1/4” the color layers will all show up no matter how they drape. You can see these ribbons from 40 feet away. Perhaps tie TWO handles or RINGS top and side of the case. Tie using a HALF WINDSOR KNOT to the metal buckle ring of the handle. Learn Half Windsor knot tying: It is the 2nd example in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmHcmWiogKdsoqc This knot does not loosen. Put your phone number on one ribbon using a fine point permanent Sharpie. Example: “Owner 454-333-7878” No personal name necessary. No address necessary on the ribbon. Choose one ribbon with an unusual pattern or fabric to really make it unique. The 4th ribbon could be black color. Stand by the output port of the turnstile to reduce the chance of someone else grabbing your piece. Tie your skiies, duffel bag, backpack and what ever else with matching ribbons-even your computer case. If you are a Travel Agent, you could hot gold stamp one ribbon with your name and phone number. Send them a set of ribbons, red and blue and BLACK to your customer as a gift. Record this gift in your database so you don’t duplicate yourself. Buy a gold hot embossing machine. Gold emboss your business name on the BLACK ribbon. Put the customer’s name on it if possible. Pleasant color combinations: Red, white and blue Chartreuse and purple and orange Orange and light blue Orange and yellow Gray and pink Green and yellow Red and Green Red and Gold Light blue and light green and white The 4th ribbon could be white, gray, black, tan Tip #2 Take a cell phone picture of the ribbon tied on. Then another picture of the full luggage piece. You now have a way to communicate “what it looks like” if someone is tasked with searching for it. Take this picture outside in direct sun not under neon lights. Tip #3 Place a strip of colored duct tape on the inside lining to your case. Put TWO pieces in DIFFERENT places such as INSIDE a pocket to the case. If you dare, put your phone number DIRECTLY ON THE FABRIC Liner of the case WITHOUT USING TAPE. Or, put your name and phone number on this tape. If all identity is stripped from your case, you have this to show. If someone steals it and rips off identity tags, you can show the police officer the inside tape... To be sneaky about the tape, put your phone number on the STICKY side of the tape. Nothing is on the surface side of this tape. Tip #4 Put your phone number on a 2” x 1/2” piece of fabric or plastic sheet. Use colored Duct tape, such as black or red or neon, to tape this message to the top side of the handle. This message is under the tape hidden from view. The lettering does not touch the sticky part. Wrap it 2-3 times. Also include Tips 1,2,3 above. If you need to prove identity of the case, just unwrap it and show. Tip #5 ADDING UNIQUENESS 4 ribbons 1 designer ribbon colored taped handle stencil SPRAY PAINT a 2 1/2” stencil letter or number or word to the suit case exterior surface in addition to using all the other ideas here. Stencil spray paint a letter to the TOP ribbon. Use ribbons that are wider or more narrow than 1”. Put a travel sticker on the case. Tip #6 WEIGH YOUR OWN Scales accuracy varies at different airports. If you are even 1 pound over, you pay. So, regulate yourself. Found on Ebay, buy a HAND HELD DIGITAL SCALE It is less than $15. ..

Great video! I appreciated your “real talk” segment. I learned about the importance of weighing items from one of your earlier videos, and although I haven’t taken my scales shopping with me (yet) I did weigh everything for our trip to New Zealand in November 2019, the last time we travelled internationally. Whenever I was trying to decide between two similar items, I would take the weight into consideration and choose the lighter of the two. This helped me stay under Air New Zealand’s 7 kg (15 lbs) carry-on limit. I look forward to your future videos and learning more travel tips!

This was AMAZINGLY helpful after looking at SO MANY packing videos...this really is THE BEST!!! After a "grand tour" post-college I started traveling on my own and always with one bag (I only used one large suitcase back in the 80's when I moved to London...and I mailed back a ton of stuff...did learn my lesson dealing with that thing on the Underground when I moved to a different place). But my "one bag" traveling was before all the TSA stuff, so I never worried about weight. You've really helped me catch up with the times if I get to travel one more time (I'm over 70 and mobility is a bit of an issue).

I bought “on gossamer”undies based on several recommendations. I actually didn’t like them when it was really hot because they don’t absorb sweat. Also, in the TMI category, if you have any issues with “leaks” as she says, be aware that pantyliners will not stick and I found that they retain odors. I tossed mine out in Italy a few weeks ago. Not a good investment for me. I also wash things out in the sink because I don’t like carrying around dirty clothes. I have bought several brands of special underwear but have since realized that my regular (cotton) undies will dry within a day if I wring them out with a microfiber travel/camp towel and hang them somewhere with good ventilation. The ones with the built-in pads are also very hard to wash out well in the sink. And they say you need to rinse them out at the end of the day before you toss them in the wash. And they take forever to dry.

I agree with another commenter that you should link items you recommend for ease in shopping for your subscribers. It's great that travel is available to us again.

I use the bags my newspaper comes in (yes, I know it's archaic, but I still get newspaper home delivery) for my shoes, THEN I put them in packing cubes. They are free (if you get newspaper delivery) and that way, I keep my shoe packing cube clean and discard the newspaper bag when I get home if they are dirty (after all, I'm going to get another one tomorrow...)

The “air conditioning” got me! 😂🤣😂 I travel a ton, and my bag is usually 1/3 snacks, 1/3 books, a change of clothes, an eye mask and a set of earplugs. LOVED the tip about buying a local USB adapter. So smart!!! Will be picking one up immediately upon landing next time. Thanks for sharing.

I found a an amazing watercolor travel palette! The Watercolor FlipKit by Royal & Long Nickel is 18 colors, the water fillable brush, a sponge and a mixing tray that is so super compact. Dimensions are smaller than my cell phone an less than an inch deep! Hurray!! I can remember the maker of my other tracer art supply find, but it's a set of pastels. I am able to fit my small sketchbook) pad, give sketch pencils, the sharpener, eraser, two blending stumps, the watercolors, and the pastels in a small pencil pouch that I used to keep hooked in my 3 ring binder...and there's room to spare!

I use the palette that is made from a business card holder, holds 14 colors. I got it off Etsy, can’t remember the name, but it is amazing. So small and thin. I plan on taking to Europe in the fall, but I have to have real brushes, don’t care for the water brushes.

I love watching & listening to your travel-related presentations. I think your ideas will be really helpful the next trip I take. Would you please write the names of the products you showed us in this video? I know of Tom Bihn luggage but you mentioned another brand I'm unfamiliar with. Also, the spray deodorant, etc. Just a list under your video would be so helpful so we can see the spelling; doesn't even need to be links. Thanks in advance. Looking forward to your info on shoes too!

The sports bra bathing suit! I’m cruising from Miami to London and then two weeks in uk in January. I didn’t want to add bathing suit and coverup (and flip flops) but I think I can make this work! Also I have to recommend Snag tights for two reasons, lightweight merino tights are warm and layerable but also sizes for the tall and or large people

The second zipper on the packing cube is for compression. So you have it expanded, pack it full and then zip that second zipper back up, to make it smaller, and it compresses everything, so it takes up less space 😬

Loqi brand reusable shopping bags come in a little zip pouch that I never use since the bags roll up and snap without. I repurposed a couple of the pouches; one for a basic first aid kit and one for a small sewing kit. They’re the perfect size (4.5” square) and very lightweight. Plus they come in beautiful art prints. I always bring along one of the loqi shopping totes too and keep it handy on the plane so I have a bag to quickly stuff my jacket into so I don’t have to put it on when deboarding at a hot destination. Loqi bags are made of recycled material, weigh 56 g (1.98 oz) and can carry up to 20 kg (44 lbs). I’m not a rep for these bags, I just really love them and use them all the time at home as well as for travel.

Agree! As a longtime hiker, I never go anywhere without some version of a first aid kit, even have a pretty big one in my truck. In fact, hiker videos are great resources for creating an emergency kit since we’re also obsessed with weight. 😆

We used small carry-ons for our last trip. The airlines made us check them. One was a small hard-sided carry-on, well within the required dimensions and not heavy. The other was a Rick Steve's soft backpack. If the airline says you have to check the carry-on, is there any recourse?

Sarah, I have a question. What if you have sleep apnea and you need to bring a CPAP machine with you? Even a travel sized CPAP is pretty bulky and will not allow you to travel with one bag only. Has Rick Steves ever had a person on his tour who needed to carry a CPAP machine? If so, what did Rick do about it?

Huge fan and repeat customer of 32° items...very affordable and lightweight, carry-on friendly. Amazing layering items...😊 NOT a fan at all of traditional bras, gone are the underwires too. 😒 Reebok makes some favorite sports bras of mine. Also, 32 Degrees makes some great bras with removable cups...so comfortable, easy wash/dry and affordable! Hanes makes those "built in pads" underwear. I am a repeat customer.
