Remember to change out your socks when you go to sleep. The sweat will cool off and make it super hard to warm up your feet. Wear wool socks. Since you are car camping, bring a foam pad. It makes sleeping way better and gives you additional insulation when you sleep. Don’t give up. You just need the right equipment.

I was in the Air Force from 69 to 81 enjoyed every minute of it camp a lot. I also rebuilt a 69 beetle,put flared fenders on it rebuilt the engine it would run fast like a Porsche. Wide tires help to keep it on the ground and not flip it.

Sarah, you can get what they call a Bivy Sack, which is a Mylar sack, that reflects your body heat back. so you could put your sleeping bag into the Bivy sack and, if you go camping in winter any more, you will be MUCH warmer when you sleep. and to blow up the mattress you can get one of those little air pumps too. I am glad you tool a little break, even if you did freeze your butt off.

Absolutely get two wool blankets (Amazon, $20.00) one on top of the mattress and a spare. Always useful camping or for other uses( like the Bronco broke, and you got to get under it for the fix)

Sarah, I camp too. Why so committed ($$$) to your vehicle, tent, etc., but cheese out on your warmth and bedding?? Get some proper camping sleeping bag booties (mine are Baffin), memory foam padding, learn about sleeping bags, fleece sleeping bag liners and blankets. Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance! I do respect - 27 is cold! :) Also all 3 of my bags are extra long as I am over 6'.

Btw. You can zip to large Coleman winter sleeping bags together for two people! 👌🏼 will fit in the back of most SUV that fold down flat. I'm sure it'll fit in your pop-up tent.

The air mattress offers cushioning, but doesn't provide much insulation. You need something like a closed cell foam pad on top of the air mattress to keep the cold at bay. Back when I was a much younger backpacker, I used a Thermarest air mattress that had an integrated closed cell pad. I used that in 20° weather at 10,000 feet up in the Colorado mountains and stayed toasty warm in my little tent.

If you add a self inflating mattress pad, it gives great insulation from the cold. A couple of breaths of air is all they require. Down throws are inexpensive and will insulate your top side well.

Air mattresses suck the body heat right out of you. When I used to take my kids camping, I put an old fabric sleeping bag on top of the air mattress then I slept on top of that with a sleeping bag or blankets depending on conditions.

The best camping sleeping pad I have found (non-backpacking) is the Wellax Sleeping Pad. It combines memory foam and air (self-inflating). It becomes 3" thick and is very comfortable and serves as insulation too. If you were to combine on of these pads (Amazon) with a sleeping bag rated for 0º or lower, you would have enjoyed a nice comfortable and warm sleep. Have fun. You're channel is great!

Camping Tip: Use a bellows pump to inflate your air mattress. Blowing it up manually fills the mattress with moisture that really attracts the cold and transfers it to your sleeping bag. In winter camping the moisture can actually freeze inside the mattress. Learned the hard way then learned the Army way.

You should never suffer car camping. You can bring everything and its mother to make it more comfortable. An insulated pad is necessary, the higher the R value the better. A 0 degree bag is also a necessary thing in cold temps as are proper clothes to wear, hat gloves whatever you need to stay comfortable. I am not that knowledgeable, but, my kid was an eagle scout, and you pick things up!
