This is as good as any product evaluation we've ever seen an artist conduct! You did an amazing job designing and executing these tests. We would love to see the lightfastness evaluations! We are so glad you mentioned the cost to manufacturers of conducting tests with special equipment to conform to ASTM D6901-15 standards for colored pencils. The Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA) has devised its own tests for artist-consumers, which are available to members, along with the organization's own results.

Wow, Sarah! Your research and commitment to find the best are outstanding. It is interesting that your two finalists, Caran d'Ache Luminance and Derwent Lightfast were also evaluated to be among the best by a few other colored pencil artists (who also loved Faber-Castell Polychromos, which you marked down a touch on blending). Great minds think alike. God bless you. Thank you so much again for your thoroughness. Your art is beautiful.

That is a lot of pencils! Super helpful to see the pencils performance especially by budget. I've just taken advantage of Black Friday deals and got a great price on 120 Polychromos and 100 Lightfast for my art stuff, I have Chromaflow for my fun projects and colouring books and I still have my Crayola which was my staple for a long time that I think I'll keep for nostalgia and just doodles now I have invested in other pencils. When deciding on the Derwent ranges, I actually brought one of each pencil for the different lines in the same/similar colour to see how they handled, and I actually found a couple that didn't feel nice to hold, I've learned I like smaller and smooth pencil barrel.

As a newbie - Black Widows work great for burnishing + blending + color range and the Brutfuner square is still the best value, hands-down. I have a very hard grip though so that affects things. Also a special nod to Kalour 280 - they aren't the best, but for the price, the number of colors you get can help with different shades without relying too heavily on layers and blends.

I absolutely love Woomer colored pencils! I found them on Amazon for $31.99, I think, a new brand, and decided to try them. To me, they feel exactly like Prismacolor pencils. They are creamy, lay down easily, blend beautifully, the colors are gorgeous. If they ever come out with more colors I will be buying them immediately. I have quite a few of very expensive brands, but I always reach for the Prismas first, and now Woomers. They came in a nice tin, but I put them in a pencil case immediately. I'm disabled, do all my artwork while on my recliner (where I pretty much live 24/7), and wrestling a tin and trays are too much. I haven't watched the whole video yet, but since these are so new, I don't think you tried these. I guess I'll find out. I wish I could contact the manufacturer to tell them directly how much I love these pencils and to beg for more colors. They are that good.

I really think it depends on your technique. I'm very, very light-handed and prefer Polychromos and Pablos over your Winners without hesitation. Your 10 Layers are my 30 Layers. I can blend the Polychromos and Pablos to my hearts content, as i'm so lighthanded. Layering is a given with these. Between 40-50 Layers, which i sometimes want and need to get the depth i want. Prismacolors on the other hand i tend to find smeary/greasy and don't like the waxy feel overall. They are very expensive in the long run, because even i eat through these pencils like they're butter. The Luminance are ok, but i do find them a bit overpriced as i can get the same or very similar results with other, cheaper brands. Some Luminance are definitely more on the scratchy-side at least in my set. EdIt: The above said, the amount of time and effort you put into this video is amazing. Don't want to take that away. It's just from my experience there are different pencils for different techniques and i find it hard to give a universal "fits all techniques" solution.

I have the complete set of 100 Derwent Lightfast. Cost a fortune ($450 Canadian, and that was 25% off). They come in a beautiful wooden box. Amazing pencils. My favourite are still the Inktense, which of course blend with water , but once they dry they don't move when wet. I also love the Koh-i-Noor woodless, both plain and aquarelle. The plain are about $20 for a set of 24. No wood, so you're paying for straight pigment. Layer and blend beautifully. The aquarelles were $90 for 48. I love the way they go onto the paper and blend.

As far as I know I think Prisma colors are best. The colors are so pigmented, also the drawings look realistic 😍

I have about 40 sets of pencils. Many of them are so-so, but I've found good sets for coloring books and sets for professional use. I've found the quality and type of paper has a big effect on how well various brands work.

I have 72ct castle arts,12ct derwent lightfast, 12ct derwent inktense, 72ct prismacolor, 120 faber castell polychromos. Next on the list is the 76ct caran d'ache luminance or the lyra rembrandt. The polychromos are hard by themselves compared to prismacolor but used together they blend good. Plus the prismacolor gives more of a gloss compared o polychromos

for broken wax barrels, microwave the pencil for about 15 seconds or so, on possibly 5 sec increments then let the pencil sit to cool down and repair itself. You can also sit them in a hot car or by the sunny window until they seem hot enough that the core melted enough to repair itself after cooling down.

35 years ago I bought a Prismacolor 48 pencil set. Cost me about $20. I've replaced all the colors at least once through the years. I've been thinking of trying out one of the many pencil sets out there but honestly didn't know where to start. Thank you for this video. You've helped me and many others a great deal.

definitely looking forward to the Lightfastness Results, thanks for putting in the work. Was wondering if single pigment, decent color range, excellent lightfastness colored pencils were even possible.

Great video. But that Deli definitely 3-4 times cheaper than Arteza here and I considered the brand as budget pencils like Brutfuner than other well known mid range pencils.

I prefer Fabre Castell to Derwent cause I hated the grainy texture Derwent gives and I couldn’t get rid of. Also found I couldn’t get as bright a color out of them. But my Derwent pencils were old and second hand from my brother so maybe that’s why.

I honestly really enjoy using my Brutfuner pencils pencils for doing some anti-stress coloring book stuff. They sharpened really well for me and so far have been lasting me a really long time. I've been able to blend them really nicely as well with blender pencils or burnishers. I have had a lot of fun doing pastel goth coloring books with their macaroon pencils as well. They were given to me as Xmas gifts the last two years and I've honestly had a lot of fun with them for non-professional coloring.

The SJ Star-Joy Gold pencils looked amazing in the rankings, especially for being a budget option. If I ever get into colored pencils, maybe I'll give them a try :D

will watch this again at half speed ... and again. I love colored pencils and your work with them is a joy to watch! Oh, and I do wish Derwent would send you a full set of Lightfast pencils! I love my Luminance, would be interesting to hear your opinion on the Lightfast full color range, how they work compared to, and along with the Luminance. Having 200 lightfast colors to pick from ... wouldn't that be nice?

i also use prisma colour, caran dache luminance and polychromos but i dont use the rpisma colours often. i create photorealistic colour pencil portraits and polychromo are easily my favourite, but i always combine it with cran dache luminance which is usually a base layer

Great video! I have had a full set of Luminance for many years and recently treated myself to 70+ Lightfast as I tried a couple of open stock and was impressed as they are oil based (with the Luminance being wax). Glad I worked out the worlds best pencils without having to buy quite so many..! You should definitely get a full Lightfast set and I would suggest that for the pencils which you don't use, donating them to a school etc.
