Re mat leave. You are very privileged to be able to take leave, many 'normal people' don't at all. We are lucky in Australia that we have access to govt funded parental leave plus many companies now also provide paid leave on top of this. Obviously subject to culture of companies in order to make the actual experience and viability possible. Don't forget though when you say 'normal people' - the majority of countries (including the USA) currently offers no paid leave at all for parents. Completely up to individual companies and often is not offered.... they often go straight back to work due to financial pressure or risk of losing their job. It is hard but consider your privilege, 99% of others in the world are doing it so much tougher.

In norway the pregnant woman goes on m.leave 3 weeks before the duedate (mandatory). Then the mother have 15 weeks, 16 weeks can be for the mother or partner, then 15 weeks for the partner. All 100% paid if you were working befor the m.leave :)
