I have both the ta maps and trail notes printed out (maps at a3 size.. one to 2 areas at a time) with any need to know info highlighted and have the days maps /trail notes in a water proof map case in easy reach... I still have the far out app /ta maps/topo maps on my phone but its much easier /faster for me to look at the paper map/trail notes especially in bad weather then to get the phone out.. That and i never worry about battery life when navigating.. also have a i66 gps /satellite message /tracker with maps what works in the rain...

That sounds like such a solid setup-you’ve definitely thought through your navigation system! Having the printed TA maps and trail notes at A3 size with key info highlighted is a brilliant idea, especially for quick reference in bad weather. I completely agree that sometimes paper maps are easier and more reliable than using a phone, especially when battery life is a concern. Plus, the waterproof map case is a great touch for convenience and durability on the trail. It’s awesome that you’ve got a GPS/satellite messenger too-that added layer of safety and functionality is such a smart move. It sounds like you’re well-prepared for anything the trail might throw at you! 😊

A fun bit of ta history.. One of the reasons why the ta route can be difficult to follow is because lots of different groups was involved with setting up the route.. Offen with very different ideas how the route should be signposted.. So some places are better marked then others... Also the difficulties in linking parts of the trail to each other As for navigation in the rain...(as well as a few other issues) I solved the issue with having to pull out my phone (especially in the rain) by going old school with paper maps in a water proof map case with in easy reach in fount of me behind my bumbag... As great as phones are for navigating.. They tend to be to complete useless in rain (i also have maps on my waterproof (none touchscreen) i66 gps /Inreach... A good read on the history /early days of the trail is Geoff chapple book te araroa one main walking his dream (Geoff is the main person behind the trail)

Thanks so much for sharing that bit of TA history-it's fascinating to hear how the trail's setup by different groups has influenced its navigability! It makes so much sense now why some sections are well-marked while others can be more challenging to follow. Linking up different parts of the trail must have been such a complex task too. Thanks for mentioning Geoff Chapple’s book too-it’s such a great read for anyone wanting to learn more about the history and vision behind the trail. His story really adds another layer of appreciation for what the TA is today! 😊
