@@deadpooldan9862 hi, mexican *who speaks spanish as first language here*, and you english speakers have to know someting about the "canon" in Latin america. Sometimes english canon DOESNT MATTER AT ALL. WE HAVE CHANGE MOVIES AND SERIES STORIES FOR YEARS!!! (specially in the 70s and 80s), sometimes because the american humor just dont vibe with latinos and the references are to "american niche", so they change things to be more regional for the latinos (depends what country does the traduction, México its the most playfull with their accents and scritps, to the point of have controversies for that with other spanish speaking fans -yes im looking at you Aventure time-). SOOO... that Castiel and Dean scene in spanish goes like this: (BTW "Te amo" its only use for very pasionate and strong love in Latin america, and usually its romantic; men dont used with friends cause of the macho stereotype, so in TV is not use it between men so easily). Castiel: I love you, dean Dean: I love you too cass Im not even a shipper, i drop supernatural in season 9, but the scene she puts in the video really suprise me, again the voice actor doing their shananigans. dean is not my favorite character but they put him down like a dog really. i feel sorry for people who grew up with that character who went through ups and owns in their life and made memories with the show. i feel like dean was written in 2 difference ways at the same time, cool hero but cold gangster enforcer, they put him down like someone who lead a life of crime would go. instead of a blaze of glory or happy ending. the fans idolized dean. i wonder what the writers really thought of him. spn was15 seasons, truly as world to get lost in. i would call the second to last ep the final episode for me.

I never liked either. Both are misogynistic, homophobic and white privilege personafied. They think they can police the world in this mediaval mindset, and never grow as people. Sam's only face looks like he smelled a fart, the actor isn't very good. Towards the end you can see the camera awkwardly cuts away quickly before Sam makes that face. The side characters were THE talent and what carried the show. Not the "main characters".

@@commiewhacker4033 ugh i wish i could feel that way, it sounds so peaceful lmao😭 my issue w dean’s ending is that the entire show, from start to finish, dean was battling mental health issues and suicidal thoughts, and he wanted to quit hunting from the start, but believed he’d never be able to, and that he’d die on a hunt. to have him then actually die on a hunt, from a treatable injury, felt extremely disrespectful to the character to me and ignored any and all character development they’d written for dean. i just can’t be satisfied with a show that ran for 15 years and then ended exactly the way it started, the whole point of a story is to have DEVELOPMENT and then not just ignore that development in the very last 40 mins of the 327 episode show😭

I'm not sure if it's been addressed or not, but in hindsight it's clear that both in conception and execution this was a show aimed squarely at an audience of Boomer Dads - the neo-western vibes with classic rock music, two manly man brothers and their older even manlier man dad driving around in a classic muscle car killing demons from the Bible and where every woman on the show is either dead, evil, or about to switch from one state of being to the other - aka the very designed-in-a-lab platonic ideal of a Dad Show. So the writers were clearly both unprepared and COMPLETELY blown away when their audience turned out to be 90% teenage girls,, young women, and gay people, a demographic they clearly had no idea how to satisfy, and then impressively, managed to spend almost twenty years of television on the air without hiring anyone for the writer's room who DID.

I just find this a bit baffling as someone who grew up with Buffy and could tell how much influence it had on Supernatural as early as the first season. Like, did they not realize that it would appeal to similar audiences? Especially on a network like the CW. Or maybe they hoped creating a show like Buffy (demon hunting, monster of the week, comedic but dark) but taking out any semblance of feminist messaging would appeal to an entirely different audience. They wanted to make Buffy for bigoted dads.

Honestly, it's so weird when creators are being rude to their fandom. Like ANY fandom. The fandom adores their work, spends time to engage with it, creates work that is a symbol of their adoration, and that's what they get in return? Like be fucking grateful that you got following that loves your work and it's thanks to them you're able to be creative as your main source of income, you dipshits.
@jazzycat89174 жыл бұрын
@@shmel3689 I personally believe its because the audience they get is not the one they want. Mainstream media and society in general calling teenage girls "cringey" for being passionate about literally anything is well documented, so when certain shows like Supernatural and Sherlock ended up with a fanbase heavily made up of teenage girls i can only imagine how pissed off this made certain showrunners and producers. They don't want to be a "cringey" show that teen girls liked: Supernatural wanted red blooded American dudes repping their red blooded American bros killing monsters, Sherlock wanted smug intellectuals of what i like to call the "reddit variety" to match their smug psuedo-intellectuallism and "genius". But what they got was a massive wave of excitable young women (many of them queer to boot). So began the cognitive dissonance: pretend that the fangirls only make up a small percentage of your audience so you can feel justified in mocking them just enough so that you also don't lose all the money that deep down you KNOW they are the driving force behind.

It's much easier to get mad at creators who never meant to write something gay than it is to seek out the (absolute ton) of well-written gay rep out there in the world and deal with those works on their own much more complex merits.

Maybe some character debates or very minor shipping spats but nothing on the level of its sister fandoms, Sherlock and Supernatural. And even the stuff with Jodie isn’t as bad as all this for the most part I think, it’s mostly people debating about the writing with some really hardcore fans of her calling anyone who critiques it sexist and some genuinely misogynistic fans putting it down just because the Doctor is female now and not because the writing’s bad. So yeah, some normalish fandom drama stuff, but there wasn’t much back in the day and certainly not a crazy fandom wide conspiracy like this or TJLC.

I've thought about this issue a lot (and written essays about it in university in hopes of clearing things up for myself) but I haven't found a definitive answer yet about why exactly this happens. I really think badly written female characters are a big reason why slash shipping happened in the first place - no one wants to watch OR identify with shallow characters built around sexist stereotypes. Henry Jenkins speculated (among other hot takes lol) in Textual Poachers, written in 1992, that slash fiction could be an easy way to explore equal relationships untainted by patriarchal power dynamics. I'm not sure because I haven't been active in Fandom spaces for some years now but I feel like since we've gotten more diverse female representation, this has gotten a bit better? Like other commenters said: Supernatural was a tricky one because most of its female characters early on are terribly written (although I personally liked not only Charlie but also Meg when I was younger - again: retired fan over here, no idea what happened to them in the last few seasons). For example, I look at The Witcher and of course people ship Geralt with Jaskier, but I haven't seen a lot of hate from these shippers towards Yennefer (Geralt's Canon love interest) because the female (!) showrunner went out of her way to portray Yennefer as an interesting, relatable character. Then again, I might just be missing the hate from slash fans because the hate from angry and misogynistic cishet male video game nerds is louder. All of that being said, I can't deny that a lot of male slash shipping by female fans *feels* fetishizing sometimes, and I say that as a bi woman who's been there myself. The whole slash shipping thing, despite being a huge part of my own adolescence, remains a mystery to me that I can't quite put my finger on.

Latinoamerican dub (español latino) dosent censor lgbt+ characters and plots . On purpose ,sometimes have been some mistakes in translation . For example the dub of sailor moon has haruka and michiru as a couple , cause it was translated directly from japanese instead of the english translation like other animes like pokemon . Even if here in latam theres many homophobic people , i never seen any lgbt+ plot being censor . In fact theres so little censorship , sometimes had been censorship in violent escenes in cartoon especifically like a little cut in steven universe when garnet was separated in season 1 ,cause it was a little too violent . But nothing more . Latino dubs are one of the best and i dont say cause is my lenguaje ,i say cause i watch allmost all series in the original lenguaje and then compare to the dub ,always choosing similar voices ,and adapting jokes .

I mean I don't really think it was homophobic- and this is coming from somebody who's never seen an episode of supernatural lol. It's like when you ask a female actress how her character is so skinny or how she looks so young or anything- obviously not the same thing, but based on this video, and from what I know from fandoms, he was probably constantly being asked the same thing over and over. He has this character that he would probably love to talk about when it comes to his decisions, ideas, morals, etc., and literally, the only questions people ever ask him are about his sexuality. It makes it feel like that's the only thing they care about, whether he _might_ be bi and not the actual character, which would definitely be annoying. Idk, I feel like that clip just had an out of context feel to it, like he's almost certainly being asked these questions all the time and is probably tired of it, and when it's the first question asked, plus when someone straight up goes up to him with an entire *essay* about why his character is bisexual, it seems upsetting. Again, not a fan of Supernatural, just my opinion.

I think the worst thing that this show implies, is that despite death being nothing more than an inconvenience and an excuse for an adventure most of the time, Dean doesn’t even attempt to retrieve Cas. While reading this I remembered that in German translation (anime, not manga), they as well decided to switch the gender roles of one villain pairing: Remember in the first season, the four knights of the villain queen? All of them male, two of them in a pairing. In German synchronisation, they switched one of them to a female voice to make the pairing straight. I mean. Ok. As if any child watching the show cared, to be real. Literally no one did. (Sailor Moon in Germany was primarily a phenomen for children and young teens up to maybe the age of 12.) Fast forward a few season, just in case you’re wondering: They did not make this switch again either with Haruka/Michiru nor with the Sailor Star Fighters nor Fisheye and the other two. Oh well, sweet summer child of 90ies homophobic Western media. Why, just why.

Yknow I think part of the reason people consider questions about a character's sexuality "inappropriate" is because people still see same-sex relationships as some inherently sexual thing, yknow the whole "we cant show gay couples, what would the children think?" While straight couples are flaunted relentlessly.
@haroldsandahl64084 жыл бұрын
I would argue that gay and straight couples are inherently sexual things. The act of coupling makes it sexual, otherwise it would be the same as many other relationships. As far as asking about fan theories, it is about taking something implicit, that you have read into the work, and make it explicit. In effect, it is asking the author of the themes you had to write a book report on are the intended themes. Some will respond positively, others negatively. And the fans will do the same. If the author intended the themes then that could make them very excited. If not, then you could make them frustrated.
@PureMagic1014 жыл бұрын
@@haroldsandahl6408 relationships aren’t inherently sexual though? Example: ace people in relationships exist. People with little to no libido exist. Elementary schoolers have relationships. People who just don’t want to have sex exist. There’s romance involved, yes, but the concept that it’s going to be sexual isn’t necessary. There’s orientation, but to assume it’s all innately sexual is not correct.

I’ll never forget that one of the actors (forgot which one forgive me) was asked about destiel at a panel and he said something along the lines of “this is a family show, stop asking,” which means he thought queer relationships were inherently not family friendly. @PureMagic1014 жыл бұрын
@@haroldsandahl6408 the biggest issue really is though that when straight people are together, it’s a “relationship,” where as when gay people are together, it’s seen almost solely as a “sex thing,” because to a lot of people gay people arent in a relationship, they’re just there to fuck. Basically, they ignore that he’s traumatized, was isolated, is extremely uncomfortable with his body after what Reginald did to him and he’s still under his thumb. As for Vanya, it’s not enough that she’s the cause of the apocalypse. No, according to them, she is abusive and gaslights her sister and is totally self absorbed and probably psychopathic. Never mind that’s she was drugged up and brainwashed her entire life, she was being manipulated by a murder and um, they’re all self absorbed. Guess what? Abusive childhoods and trauma doesn’t make one turn out to be a well adjusted person. Oh and then there’s the ship war nonsense. In short, they want to demonize a Hargreeve and can’t be Allison because she’s the one with a brain cell, it’s can’t be Klaus because he’s the breakout character, nor Five because he had the best performance. And then there’s Diego, who cares about Grace. So it’s a choice between Luther with the moon jokes and Vanya with being the apocalypse maiden. Of course it had calm down a bit since Luther rejected Reginald and become the goofy big guy and Vanya got a girlfriend. That’s tumblr for ya. I keep it simple and just hate Reginald. God, yes. It's so rare for mysteries in any given media to actually lead somewhere satisfying.

It's actually ruined other shows for me bc I expect that level of care and am disappointed frequently

i too am spoiled by being in the deltarune/undertale fandom and forget that most creators of media are not, in fact, tobert “radiation” fox. both in being given a bunch of really cool mysteries and puzzles to solve and in also feeling like the creator respects their audience and wants them to have a good time with their story and the world(s) they’ve created. as well as toby just being absolutely unhinged and giving us lovingly crafted shitposts like the spamton sweepstakes lmao. i wish more writers would actually have fun not just making a thing, but making their audience want to actively engage with the thing and have fun and rewarding fandom experiences.

I love how SPN just...casually had time to show Sam's picket-fence life with an anonymous woman when he had another love interest, apparently, and that Cas, who was vital for 11 feckin seasons, wasn't even shown in the finale. Just. Quality right there lmao
@CelesteBou4 жыл бұрын
The finale is also bad because in the previous three seasons, Sam, Dean and Cas had adopted a kid, Jack, who ends up being completely forgotten by them in 15x20 and became "God" at just 3 years old, which means the poor kid never got a normal life. Also, the last episode mentioned that Dean and Sam's abusive parents went to Heaven after all.

Not to mention Sam’s main love interest before blurry woman was deaf, so the writers either forgot about or completely sidelined a disabled character to give Sam his little happy, perfect life.

@@CelesteBou I mean, SPN forgot Adam Winchester even existed so...yeah, that's very on-brand for them :')

@@robinmitchells Woooow. SPN really hitting ableism at their finale to tick that last "ism" off the box, huh? :')

“When the only gay narratives are tied to death and misery, and that’s the only representation you get, it kinda sucks.” I’m getting Buffy flashbacks too...

People who haven't watched Supernatural past season-10, or at all, be like: "castiel was killed! hate crime! #buryyourgays!".. Who's gonna tell them that on a season 15 episode, Cas asked his son to kill him for 1 hour so he could go to "turbo hell", talk to Ruby there and then came back UNSCRATCHED. People do not get that the problem is NOT that he died, which in fact he did to save HIS SON'S LIFE, the problem is that his resurrection happened /off-screen/. Dean's ending is much more tragic than Cas' .

Literally when I heard that they wanted his soul at its happiest for turbohell, I was like "so cas = Angel? If cas = Angel than Dean = buffy? Yikes"

Sure, Tara did die tragically in order to develop Willows character, but... They were in a relationship for quite a long time on the show. In terms of representation, I really like them, actually. And also in all other terms, haha.

my favorite thing `is watching the number of ao3 fanfics, tagged "fix-it" within the supernatural tag, slowly ticking up after that episode came out
