If you’re ready to upgrade the quality of your sound for video, one of the easiest and most affordable ways to do that is with a small shotgun microphone which attaches to the shoe mount of your camera. Saramonic just released a new mic in this category which they call the Vmic. It is affordably priced yet manages to produce very impressive, clean sound. For even better dialogue recordings, I also demonstrate how it sounds when boomed about 40cm above your talent. Pretty amazing for the price point which is $119 USD at the time of the review.
If you’d like to improve your sound recording skills for film, please have a look at our Sound Recording for Video course over at school.learnlightandsound.com

+Sir Sebastian Thanks! Looks like I need to do a formal comparison :) My guess is that the Rycote Lyre shock mount on the RODE is more effective and the RODE also has a metal cold shoe mount, a 3/8" tap for boom poles, and RODE also offers an accessory furry wind cover (not included with the mic, but available for purchase).

Thanks for using *_cold shoe_* when describing how it mounts. so many people say *_hot shoe_* for accessories that have no electrical connections to the camera. The GH4 has a hot shoe but the only accessory I've seen that would use the connections would be an electronic flash. Oh and thanks for a great review. I added it to my Amazon wish list and may just buy one, 'cause it sounds pretty good to me.

SUPER review!!! One question ... how much focusing noise does this pick up when mounted on the cold shoe? I am trying to avoid hearing the zzz zzzz zzz as the camera seeks to auto focus.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Ted, it will pick up autofocus mechanical noise, though not quite as much as the camera’s microphone. Probably reduces the noise by about 1/3 to 1/2 relative to the mic built in to the camera.

+ThatWasSexyPit Lower price for sure! Going to do a comparison. I suspect that the Rycote Lyre suspension is a little more effective on the RODE VideoMic Pro but some testing will tell us for sure. Also, a metal cold shoe on the RODE, and a 3/8" tap on the RODE for connecting it to a proper boom pole.

+Zack8133 ppl actually care about that? lol Do you think Curtis would be bias? I highly doubt it even if some company sent him stuff.... 'Always be as subjective as possible, especially towards those that want something from you.' -Winston Churchill
@Zack_Darce
@Zack_Darce 8 жыл бұрын
+Sully Cortez I guess you've never heard of people being paid off before. The point of a review is to get an OBJECTIVE overview of the product in question. Not someone's subjective opinion. Because Curtis's channel is pretty popular he's in a position of power to some degree.. many people will buy a product simply because a popular KZbinr reviews it. Companies understand this and send products to people to review so that people like you will see that he reviewed something, and go buy it simply because he reviewed it.... Curtis also understands this, hence his full disclosure.
@SullyCortez
@SullyCortez 8 жыл бұрын
+Zack8133 Yes I have, but 99% of KZbinrs are NOT paid in any way shape or form even those that receive 'gifts' from companies to review. Just realize that BARELY any pro youtubers get 'paid' for advertising. That's why there is advertising on their videos, THAT is how they get paid and that's how the company get's paid and by you going out and buying the product becuase of his review. My point is that even if Curtis gave a subjective POV, do you REALLY think that he would come on his channel and promote something he was getting paid for? Now I don't know curtis' standpoint on this, but i'm pretty sure in looking through his past videos along with guys like Tom Antos, Dave Dugdale, Nitsan Simantov, Caleb Pike, and more, THEY ALL do not do review on products they are 'paid for'. And that is where this stops because I have yet to see a review or video where they WERE paid lol. So i'm 99% sure any video you watch despite them getting a product from a company they were not PAID. And even if they were who honestly cares. If you think the product is good and looks great and is a worthwile investment into something you want, then who cares what youtuber says. If you go out and buy something just based on ONE PERSONS OPINION of an item then you clearly need to rethink how you're spending your money. I just didn't know people actually cared about a disclosure on a channel that has almost NEVER if i'm correct taken money for a product review...
@Zack_Darce
@Zack_Darce 8 жыл бұрын
+Sully Cortez I don't know why you are defending this channel so hard. just cause I say thanks for disclosure doesn't mean I'm accusing him of anything. the point: Whether the person gets paid via KZbin, or manufacturer doesn't matter. Lets say a new iphone came out... and apple sends one to a KZbin reviewer, but he's an android guy so he doesn't really like it. Should he still review it? no. Will he review it? probably. why? because even though he may not like it, he is aware of the popularity of iPhone's.. this popularity will drive people to his channel to watch the review which produces income from ads. and bingo, you have someone putting their (passive) stamp of approval on a product they don't care for because the product is popular, generates views and will get then paid.
@SullyCortez
@SullyCortez 8 жыл бұрын
+Zack8133 I get what you're saying. I do. And I agree with you, people blindly purchasing things off of someone opinions fact or fiction is just stupid. I was just saying I didn't know anyone cared about someone giving an actual disclosure that's all.

Curtis, what settings do you use? 0db on the mic and -6db on GH4, right? Why not -12db? And is MicLevelLimeter turned ON or OFF?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
I left the mic at 0dB which is presumably it's unity gain setting. This means it is it's native setting. Then I just adjusted the GH4's input until the peaks on the audio meter would just hit about 3/4. You could definitely try dropping the camera's input level down as well to see whether that sounds better. Best wishes!

Hello I have a question,I just bought the microphone for my Panasonic hc-v 770 than I hear a lot of noise like sssssssss while recording so I put down to -18 db on the camera and than it's OK but too quite and I think maybe there is a better way to record louder but without noises. Thanks

The #1 thing you can do is get that mic off of the camera and close to the person speaking. Then you can leave it as -18dB and get a good loud signal. This is how I get the mic close: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioaonoR4j7CieNU

Ive been looking around for information about this mic. Another reviewer presented this mic and he found it had a constant hiss to it. Your audio is very clean and id like to ask if the camera setting would be a factor to it. (im on a canon) do we always set the in-camera audio to as low as it goes ?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
+ColonelRuiz it depends a lot on the camera, but yes, generally you want the mic to do most of the amplification work and turn the input level down on the camera. I found my Canon 60D to have a pretty noisy input but perhaps Canon have improved their inputs since then. Good luck!

Just been testing this mic today on my Canon 80D. First I recorded with my lav mic, no problems. Next with the internal mic for comparison, and then plugged in the vmic... before switching on there was no audio, upon switching on the vmic the mic levels showed audio.... listening back it seems very similar to the internal mic. However I've tested the mic away from the camera and it picks up sound. Tapping the mic away from the camera mic, picks up sound. Do I have a dodgy vmic? I've put fresh batteries in and it seems like it's working but I expected more difference from the internal mic (which I had set to manual, well left it in the manual settings I use when the lav mic is plugged in.)
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Damian, do you have any samples online I could listen to? The mic is a little more directional than most camera mics so if you're pretty close to the camera and there's a lot of ambient noise, that's when the Vmic should make the biggest difference.

Any chance that you'll review the Audio-Technica AT8024? And then ... we all know that getting the mic close is best. But I most often find myself in situations where that is not an option. For instance shooting speeches at very informal birthday parties. Using a boom pole or a lav mic would just spoil the atmosphere, and everybody would think I was an idiot (Including me). So the best is unfortunately going to be an on-camera mic about 5-8 metres away. Pretty frustrating, but that's as good as it gets. I recently tried being just a little closer - maybe 3 metres (10 feet), and that made the speaker really nervous! So we're back to the more discreet and respectful distance, I'm afraid. And placing mics in strategic places is way too much like the NSA for me. So I'd be interested in some tests of not too expensive mics at a distance of not under 20 feet - possibly outdoors in a tent or a pavillion. Are there any options that would give me audio of usable quality? Btw, thanks for your good work, I really appreciate your videos!
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 8 жыл бұрын
+Lau Bjerno The AT8024 isn't high on the list as I have serious doubts that it differs from the other camera-top shotgun microphones we have reviewed. If you're shooting farther away, you may just have to live with farther away sounding audio. I am 99.9% sure that the AT isn't significantly better than the RODE VideoMic Pro or Azden or Saramonic etc because they are all short shotgun mics. When sound engineers need to capture sound from a greater distance, they typically use a long shotgun microphone or a parabolic reflector. I have no experience with the parabolic reflectors and mics and long shotgun microphones are not generally less than $300 US. All of the long shotguns that I have seen have XLR outputs vs. 3.5mm outputs. The RODE NTG8, as an example, is priced at approximately $1000 USD. Sorry I don't have better news for you on that front but I'd rather give it to you honestly than get your hopes up that there's a magical short shotgun mic out there that is priced under $300 and can magically reach 20 feet away without picking up anything else.

Curtis Judd Thanks , actually I have the saramonic and I have recorded music with this mic but I compared to my small iPhone microphone by shure (mv88) and it sounded better than the saramonic so I wonder if the rode can do better than the saramonic and the shure MV 88. Maybe I don't really know how to record live music in the best way with this saramonic P.S. Do you know the shure vp83? What do you think? Thank you again

To be honest, shotgun microphones are not the ideal option for recording music. Tell me a bit more about how you'll be recording. Will it include more than one piano at a time? Do you have access to the stage to set up microphones on stands?

Curtis Judd Most of the times it includes one piano (rare times two pianos) and can be piano and Orchestra and sometimes I have access to the stage but sometimes I don't have but I can record from close distance. I heard about an instrument mic but with xlr connection. So not always I can put microphones on stage but I can record from close. Is there more kinds of microphones that aren't shotgun mic for camera maybe with adapter that can be good for recording music and that sometimes I could put it on stage and sometimes that I don't have access to stage I could put it on camera?

Hi Lior, yes, you can use an adapter like one of these: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJCToJeVm8SEobM And as for microphones, a small diaphragm condenser microphone (non-shotgun) would be better suited for the job. Ideally a stereo pair: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p17FkGSdhL6Ce7M

Sounds OK. Would you use one yourself professionally, please?

+Jenny FTOL In the right circumstances, certainly. I have a lot of more professional options in my kit but this one holds up well in terms of audio quality. I'm going to do more tests to see how well the suspension system prevents movement/handling noise relative to the RODE VideoMic Pro.

How does it sound 3 feet away?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 8 жыл бұрын
+D&L N Pretty close to the way it sounds 1.5 meters away. Decent, but still a little bit of ambient sound. Booming from above has the advantage of not picking up all the ambience from behind the talent which is always an issue when mounting the mic on top of the camera.

Thanks! I bought that A.lav mic that you reviewed. It's a nice little mic. I have a bass voice and noticed that it picks up my bass frequencies alot, so I might have to lower the bass in post. I tested it with a female subject and she sounded fine. I have been thinking about getting the Rode NTG3 though which would hopefully be the only boom mic I'll ever need.

+D&L N The NTG3 is a great mic, definitely a good choice! To reduce the bass response with lavaliers, it can help to move the mic off to the side rather than placing it in the center of your chest (if that's where you're placing it now). Thanks and best wishes!

Thanks Curtis for the feedback! I just got your note. I'm on a project right now where the mic was placed on the collar. I have messed around with "Audacity" and haven't been able to reduce it to where I like it. Right now I am 1) Normalizing at 0.0 2)Noise reduction at 10 db, 0 sensitivity, 100 freq smoothing, attack/delay time of 0.15 sec. I tried to mess with the EQ a little bit, but it sounds a little worse. I found that the room that I did it in has a little bit of an echo (conference room) which I guess I'll have to live with.

It was winter and I live at 6000 feet in the Rocky Mountains. I can say this: It isn't a very good microphone relative to other options available now.
