Really happy to see Magda and Pernille (finally) engaged. They have been advocates and role models for LGBTQIA+ couples in sports for a long time. Geographically Denmark isn't in Scandinavia (it's a Northic country), but linguistically Danish is a Scandinavian language. I think that they will most probably get married in Sweden.

I just want to make a point about the player/player relationship issue and Emma Hayes. Firstly, her comments were clearly influenced by the breakdown in relationship between her and AKB and the effect that had on Jess Carter. Make of that what you will. However, the backlash Emma received was a bit misguided because there is certainly an issue in this area worth discussing. Professional sport teams are full of player to player dynamics that affect the larger team unit. That doesn’t make relationships between players inherently wrong - but it certainly complicates the group dynamic and could create issues. It amazes me that people are very conscious about workplace relationships these days but are outraged at the thought that maybe footballers in their workplace should avoid romantic relationships with each other. I certainly see a difference between, say, Magda and pernille being signed to both Chelsea and Bayern once already a couple and everyone being aware going in that that is the situation as compared to two teammates beginning a relationship after becoming teammates. And before anyone brings up the power dynamics thing - a captain has power and influence on her team to a greater degree than a squad player. I haven’t heard anyone saying captains shouldn’t have intrateam relationships. I’m not saying it’s wrong or right or that Hayes was correct or incorrect - I’m saying it’s a conversation worth having.

Very good points!! Yeah her comments had to be from frustration from the Jess Cater AKB situation. I think all eyes are on Emma and i think you are right the comments are worth discussing in a more long form since its really nuanced.

Like using the AKB situation as an example: what if Jess and Emma completely fell out over it - so much so that Jess didn’t play in the run in to the end of the season and Chelsea lose the title…that whole scenario where the team, squad, club was impacted negatively purely because two players had a relationship within the team. Players and coaches falling out is never avoidable entirely. But it’s one thing for a disagreement to arise for a professional reason (player upset at not playing, coach upset with a player’s performance or attitude) and a whole other thing for it to happen because a player wasn’t happy with how their girlfriend was being treated. Again, not saying it’s wrong - and this certainly doesn’t apply to a couple who play for different clubs or for couples who were signed with everyone knowing they were a couple going in. Just saying it’s weird that the whole “don’t sh*t where you eat” “don’t dip your pen in company ink” maxims are generally well established principles of professional conduct and even more so today yet there was such outrage at Hayes’ suggestion that workplace relationships within professional football clubs are probably not a great policy.

get ready for an old reference here but Magda and Pernille are one of those couples you could see existing in any era, like the WoSo version of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, who were "together" for nearly 40 years until Stein's death in 1946. I'm not surprised they took their time to get engaged. Couples that stay together for a long time usually do. 😇

Hi Sara and Sarah, I find it funny to see that the Scandinavian couple are weary a ring on the left. Wedding rings in Northern Europe are worn on the right hands. Denmark and Sweden are totally liberal when it comes to LBTQ+, so you should be really happy to visit. Both of you are awesome people and I love your posts, even if I am a heterosexual man.
