Bravo Chloe and Lim Yan! I have listened to this piece so often and found it the most immersive in your performance repertoire. I remember loving your performance of Heifetz's arrangement of It Ain't Necessarily So and noted your use of rubato but you have taken it to another level here. Sarasate lived in Pamplona right next to Basque Country so he was able to capture the fire, beauty and discipline of the culture. I know it ws written as a salon piece so for violin soloists it was also an opportunity to demonstrate their technical skills while evoking the folk music of a locale. This performance was not evocative -- it was absolutely immersive and your progress in rubato technique is beyond impressive. Folk dancing in many places is done slightly behind the beat/tempo and then it seems to leap in front of the beat before settling on the beat. Perhaps some people would call this chaotic and yet it is also what brings a piece of music alive. What a wonderful gift to all of us. Thank you very much!

Chloe performed this work in Copenhagen last August. The other works that made up her recital were: J S Bach - Sonate c minor BWV 1017, Siciliano Largo and Allegro Tchaikovsky - Meditation d minor op.42 Mozart - Rondo C major, KV373 Kam Ning - Amazing Grace, arr. for solo violin Ysaÿe - Caprice d'après l'Etude en forme de valse de Saint-Saëns It must have been a truly incredible recital. One part of it - Tchaikovsky's Meditation - has been posted on the Copenhagen Summer Festival's channel.kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaaYYmmnbdulrs0 Hopefully, Chloe will post the rest of it here on her channel sometime. I am especially keen to hear the Bach and Kam Ning. ("Dear Santa, last year you brought me Histoire du Tango and it was the best Christmas present I ever had. I wonder if this year ...😀)

I don't have professional or technical terms to describe Chloe's interpretation of the music, but to me as a layperson, it's like personification of the music. It visualizes the music in my mind. It's kind of like hearing the soul of the music, and 'seeing,' someone dancing, all in my mind's eyes.

I love the lilting introduction, which ends with the explosive gestures at 2:57 to 3:00. It is imbued with such measured well-being. Its variations after the initial statement - which ends at 1:14 - are modest but delightful, and Chloe teases out their every nuance with marvellous sensitivity. It is a dance of people in relaxed enjoyment of one another's company and in no rush to do anything else. It sets the scene perfectly for, and counterbalances, the fireworks and exuberant brilliance that is to follow. In contrast, in what is otherwise a fine performance (on YT), Antal Zalai cuts the entire section between 1:15 and 3:00. The reason, he says in a reply to one of the comments on the video, is that "Most violinists make a cut in the first section, I guess it's because the first section is extremely repetitive rhythmically, and also its duration is unequally long compared to the second section." I think that all three parts of this statement are wrong, and that while it is logically impossible for anyone to disprove the first part (about "most violinists") single-handedly, this superb performance by Chloe is a conclusive refutation of the second and third parts.
@Colonel_Kassad

From Назар Балынский's comment: "...so few have this rare and highly intelligent class to be able to take the whole of your heart attention to another beautiful world of musical artistry, to take you away in a manner, you know, that you feel in heaven and wouldn't want to come back to the earth of your day-to-day narrow existence.... Here I don't humiliate the talent of Mr.Zalai, he's dead cool." Antal Zalai cuts his way to the flashy parts of the piece to show off but he with this he makes serious mistake. These parts are structure and cannot be omitted without losing meaning. These are like choir and soloist. Not question and answer mind you, but statements and affirmations. And these are the most joyous parts of the piece at the same time. To put it short: I go shopping, make informed decision and buy a Chloe Chua. Poor me? :)

I get the feeling that Chloe Chua is never in a rush. She takes her time to set up every note with the approach she wants to give it. Of course she plays fast when that is required, but she has enough speed that she can even take her time when playing fast passages. Just my non-expert two cents.

Chloe is such a wonderful violin virtuoso. What I find even more musically impressive though is that being so young and raised in an Asian culture she is absolutely nailing the passion, playfulness, unpredictability and some times chaotic nature of Mediterranean pieces and composers. And that's something you can't just be taught, you need some sort of life experience or a high degree of empathy. She obviously practices A LOT but her mental maturity is out of this world. Also paired with a Guarneri? Pure delight to listen to! I hope some day she will come to Greece/ Italy/ Spain/ Portugal and experience the music in that environment as well.

Warm sans theatrics. Gets better and better with repeated hearing and as new details emerge. There is technical precision (left hand pizzicati and harmonics at speed and in rhythm) and an overarching musical architecture that connects the phrases and sections, making them flow to the next organically.

By the way, another violin by Peter Guarneri of Venice - the ex-Perlman, Klausner c. 1750 - is being sold by Tarisio on 17 November. A YT search for "Tarisio Guarneri Perlman" takes one to a video of Perlman playing it. Tarisio says it is "exceptional" but on the evidence that video, what Perlman gets from it falls short of what Chloe gets from hers.

Chloe is beyond amazing. Her playing is the purest thing on earth. The technician who recorded it could have chosen a different microphone or at least try to dim the high frequences. Over all it sounds very shrill and i'm absolutely certain that it's due to the recording and not to Chloe's playing. The mid and low frequences should be pushed more and the high ones dimmed. It would underline Chloes warmth as it should (and as it is on other recordings on her channel).

Oooh, your comment is really insightful! As a violinist, something sounded “off” to me, but I couldn’t quite put words to it. I don’t know much about the art of recording, but it would be helpful to learn, probably.

@@melissat9120 thank you. It's nothing else but physics in the end. Some microphones pick up high frequences better than the other frequences, some the low ones, some the middle ones and some are pretty balanced. It makes a huge difference. After the recording there are some options to correct the sounds in postproduction, but the recording itself is key. If you have the possibility to visit a recording studio someday, go for it! And ask questions! Ask why they chose a particular microphone for, let's say the bass drum, rather than an other. You will learn so much! 😊
