Excellent overview and commentary. We are in Venice right now and haven't yet been to some attractions on your list!

I was blessed to reside in Sarasota in the mid to late 90's as I attended college at Ringling, back then Sarasota was well off the nations radar and was the textbook example of a most beautiful unspoiled sleepy retirement city. In fact much of the gulf Coast was the same , including saint Pete Clearwater of which I would also reside some years later. When it came to Florida most people only considered Orlando and the East coast cities. But the gulf coast was always arguably the best side of Florida in terms of quality of life. Problem with the gulf cities were their very nature of being more towards retirement. So you had retirement old wealth but not new wealth and with little high paying businesses or industries majority of the people were lower middle class. The cities income highly dependent upon tourism. But I can attest to being their to see first hand the beginnings of what were to come. I came from NY as a transfer student from Pratt in Brooklyn to Ringling. Animation major, who had enough of new yorks meyhem. I needed the polar opposites and my professor informed me about Ringling, and upon a visit I was hooked. The school was nothing compared to what it is today, but it was Sarasota itself that was the draw. My God what a sweet town. And no one knew about this place. People busy bad mouthing Florida didn't have a clue. The town and it's surrounding cities was paradise. But for every tourist visit came those who decided to stay and unfortunately people can't keep a secret. And so more and more came to vacation and as state and financial conditions worsened across the country so did eyes started looking elsewhere. All these people now residing in Florida are the same people who just a minute ago had cheerfully put down Florida prior, until their very cost of living drove them out of their states. The same people that claimed to hate Florida are the one who quickly moved in, how ironic. As such these cities have grown both in a good but also very bad way. Because what these towns had in the past was nice, it's people were nice. And now we got a ton of expak snobs who have driven the cost of these beautiful places sky high. I lived literally less than 200 yards from siesta key beach if I were to walk to its main parking lot entrance. Today the place I lived, a two bedroom two bath easily commands 3mil. Similar situation to where I lived in Clearwater saint Pete. I'm shocked and amazed of all the growth but also sad that such people's have come to ruin what was. It's nice, but it's also become elitist. A land of apple using Starbuck drinking snobs.
