I so agree with the editing part. After all, it's your own eyes that see what needs editing and your own hand that does the editing. So it's still your work. Same artist, different medium. You're just making the most of a digital tool. No cheating at all.
@inigo3843 жыл бұрын
I flipped as soon as I saw the thumbnail because the 2016 piece was very first video I saw from you. It's hard to believe I've been watching you for five years. You've been my favorite artist for five years!!! ❤

I remember watching the og video when I was like...12?? and thinking "wow! her digital painting is beyond beautiful, I hope I can do it someday too!"...and now I finally do! it took 4 years though...but within that time you've improved so much, it's unbelievable!! even after all this time, your art still inspires me :D

im an editor and an artist, mostly an artist and i know a lot about editing, but i get scared to adjust colors, put editorial stuff on it because im scared people will call it cheating, i think i'll do it now :DD
@rossbarone2983 жыл бұрын
most of the stuff that some artists call cheating (using references, a palette made with an app, etc) is bs. there’s no such thing as cheating in art, unless you’re tracing someone’s work and claiming it as your own! doing stuff like i said above, and editing colors with photo software, is literally just using your medium, digital, to it’s full power!

This is super great and I love the improvement you’ve made over the years; it’s been really clear! However, I’d kind of like to see a more “genuine” recreation of your 2012 one? It feels like you took all of the unique features of the original’s long, slender face out and “generified” it to the same face you always seem to draw but with different hair. I feel like it’d be really interesting to see what she would look like with similar facial features to the original! It wouldn’t be so much muscle memory as with this one, but a real vision into your thought process on stylization! Even so, great job, though! This is very inspiring!

yes! i would definitely like to see the piece interpreted that way, it would definitely be interesting! what i understood of her explanation on this, though, the first piece wasn’t necessarily intended to be stylized in the way that it is. it just resulted in that unique and bold style because of her lack of knowledge at the time and inability to tell exactly what proportions were off or what colors were cohesive. since it wasn’t intended as a stylized piece, she just continued with her current techniques and style in the following redraws, not necessarily accounting for the exact aesthetic of the old piece because to her it wasn’t really aiming to be anything specific.

Colour is VERY subjective and mood based. No right or wrong, just what one prefers that day vs another. There are 'rules' many people can reference for how it works and harmony and things like mixing colour, contrasts, complementary but no laws. One style isn't even better just different. One person is free to prefer a style vs another. Technical progress however can and should be measured. And it's best done here as you judge yourself against your past self. However you get to the final artwork by direct painting or though digital adjustments doesn't really matter you are still using time/effort and tools to reach that final artwork. Its a great challenge for self growth analysis and to show progress and learning. Fun video, thanks.

I completely agree with your points of views on editing and digital art and how they changed over time. I absolutely love traditional art because it’s something I’ve always had access too, even if it was a napkin and a pen. I used to think digital art could be “cheating” but once I got my own iPad and actually tried to do digital I realized how complex it really is. It takes a lot of practice to fully understand and pay attention to detail when working digitally. I loved being able to see them all lined up together and the edits you made were gorgeous. You’ve always been a big inspiration to me so it’s crazy seeing your style and skills improve even more!! 🥰🧡

I enjoy watching your watercolor videos a bit more since I have tried to leave the digital realm behind me. I still watch digital videos even Nadia Axel's digital tips n tricks and other content is amazing! I am a bit surprised that you did not do a side by side by side at the end of the video give us a better chance to review all the pictures. I am a believer that you should use EVERY tool available to make your job as an Artist easier. Digital mock-ups and color shift repair is a must know in this day and age! Keep doing what you do and stay positive! You are the master of your own fate for sure!

I remember watching your digital painting videos in the early beginning and I was so motivated that I started saving money to buy my first digital tools and used Krita. Back then I was so young with only my passion as my main motivation, you tought me so much about digital art technics and hard working. Today I'm a happy full-time illustrator with representation in the publishing industry. Just to tell you thank you for keep doing what you do :) Love, Sawyer

I really enjoy seeing your videos coming up, I don't really follow too many youtubers in particular but I've really started to get into the groove with your recent content. I actually think I prefer your newest style, and that's what draws me in the most with your thumbnails. On a more detailed note, I did a thesis about the tacit decision-making of illustrators as they draw and paint a few years ago and I frequently used youtube painters as an example of those who attempt to articulate their process and how many examples there are of poor or even missing communication of process from visual artists in particular, and I wanted to say your attempts to articulate your process are really substantial, and I think, at least from my point of view, very useful compared to many. They're specific but able to be understood by many (I think), but even more than that, I also really like the way I've noticed your personality creep through in some of these as what I can only term slightly less than "social media bubbly" and I really resonated with and liked that; for example you expertly defended your paintings looking different in terms of colour choices, shapes etc, over time without sounding overly defensive, or overly polite, and I worry that too many social media people come off as a little too polite at the risk of offending an audience, and I also don't think I often see such an effective defence of artist's own work from the artist themselves, which is cool. Sorry for that long reply, just my two cents haha

The biggest points of advice appeared to concern color theory, the amount of detail one puts into a drawing in pursuit of completion of the piece, as well as the bit involving how liberal one can be with layer styles and digital tools to _improve_ your work. However, this is like saying the cherries make the cake; this is false, that is why the phrase, "cherry on top" exists. The base of the cake is the bread, the bread begins the entire cake. Start there. Attention to detail towards completion and things like curves help to polish and refine, but the base that is your pure art won't be improved if you don't know _how_ to add those subtle textures or have a solid understanding of color theory. I've been playing the flute for 6-7 years, and throughout that time my band teacher repeated one message: Improve your tone first. Without that, the embellishments--ie punctuation, rhythm, stylistic choices--none of that will matter without a good sound. Good sound in visual art consists of the basics, like color theory, proportion, perspective, consistency, and the rest of them. Figure out the basics, and your art will _then_ begin to show more drastic improvement. I did mention consistency because that's a fundamental of building any habit or skill: doing it often and consistently. Basically, don't rely on some fancy tools to better your art. They're great things! But they won't fix a hole in your knowledge. Great video, Sara! Keep it up!
