So, I've watched your video... About three weeks ago, not long after it was posted. And being new to digital art - with an academic background + a specialty in hm 3D objects (ceramics and other materials) - I have to relearn not only how to draw, but how to use CSP as well. Been on and off with it since November, because I like letting things stew a bit while I check tutorials to figure my own stuff out... However, I have a very specific style, anchored in the Art Nouveau/Modernismo/Jugendstil period, and your tutorial is the only one so far that really matches my current needs. I'm only commenting now, after 3 weeks, because I needed to let it cook a bit before starting applying your advices on my current piece (which is probably too complicated for a digital art beginner but hey, I'm a persistent idiot so I'll probably manage with enough patience). And damn, I've barely started but am I pleased so far! I am very specific about the textures I seek, so seeing you do the base colours with a G Pen had like "OH MY GOD YES THIS IS IT", and so far I am seriously liking how easy the whole process is. I'll see how things go with the shading, but honestly, I am really excited to see someone with a semi-realistic comics-style not unlike mine vibe-wise detail how they go about the whole process. Also yes I agree that tidying up a sketch before inking is better. Maybe because my IRL job, Fine ARt restoration, had me get the habit of valuing a clean base so the following steps can go as smoothly as possible. Anyway, crazy rambling aside, there's a question I'd like to ask, did my own research and checked the comments to no avail: but among the background musics you used, what's the title/artist for the one starting at around 3:30? If you remember, of course. I really like it, it's very relaxing and I wish to use it as BGM to work.

Really interesting stuff. I will admit when I am in Clip Studio I just wing a lot of stuff using my intuition whilst telling myself to learn the tools some time. I draw in pen/pencils on paper a lot, my colouring experience is mostly book form, reverse engineering and even miniature painting. A process I found helpful was to draw on paper, photograph it and insert that sketch as my initial sketch layer. I just find it to be... More relaxing? Easier to access. To just doodle on paper and if it turns out well, transfer it to digital. Line it over and colour. Colouring and shading is always magic to me at the moment though. I have done entire paintings just using one layer - bad idea generally but it was fun. Knowing when to create a new layer to do a step is the thing that voids me right now. I rather enjoy your idea of doing a lot of skin shading on one layer, rather than different tones done on separate layers.

Everyone has their own method. I wouldn't say yours is the fastest, but it works for you. I love using the llaso tool, merging layers, and using clipping masks for me it makes lifeless work flow better. I will say I work from a messier sketch line create a base and then carefully line what I want to just delete the access. In procreate I find this process to be most efficient especially merging layers of the same setting(?) To make it all cleaner then just work over the line set. For more complex pieces I might duplicate a sketch layer and have it above everything on 'lighter color' and then delete that one I have my bases dealt with. Line work can be tedious but I guess in the end it depends on the style and needs of the artist ^^

Beautiful art! Reminds me of Saimain from back in the day… she had that gorgeous Line With Painting look, which I absolutely love. Awesome video! Thank you for sharing your process. My layers are pretty simple, too: (Starting from the bottom) 0 - ref, scanned pencil sketch or desaturated, high-contrast photo. 1 - quick and dirty blocking with overlay to preserve ref 2 - quick and dirty sketch/trace. (Here i hide the reference layer so i am forced to build a more unique image.) 3 - actual lines. (If I’m doing it for money, i will sometimes vectorize the lines in InkScape and reimport) 4 - the pickup lines. (Usually in red so I can distinguish them from the lines on Layer 3) (Once the pickup lines are done, i change the color to match the lines on layer three, then merge.) 5 - lighting using overlay to preserve lines (From here, i clean my color blocking layer up, mute the quick-sketch layer.) 6 - fine details! 7 - flat copy (On this layer, i finally add a bokeh or dream filter in Krita.) But dang, it’s never as good as your stuff! Lots of work to go!!! 🤣

Glad I’m not the only one who cleans up their sketch with a cleaner sketch before the line art. Like you said I know it seems counterproductive, but for me, it also makes the line art faster and I can see any bits that are “off” before I finalize it. I also have a more painterly approach to my work, so unless I’m making something more simple or cartoony, my line art becomes quite minimal. But like you said it also helps me keep the design on point. I envy artists that can jump in after a rough sketch, like I can’t do that! Lol. I need a nice foundation first even if it takes me more time, I’d rather not have to adjust things later. I also draw with thicker lines but in CSP, I always use the vector layer with my lines and then adjust the width after to add some variety. I can’t draw thinner lines, it’s harder to see and feels too stiff when I work. It feels so reassuring to watch this video because I thought I was odd that I don’t work like other artists.

YES!! For me 'solid foundation' is everything. I really don't like the idea that I might have to keep ENDLESSLY tweaking shit alll the way into the finishing stage, when I watch amazing splash art paintings seems like there's constant tweaking like liquifying, free transform, total paint-over of certain parts etc.. Maybe that's just how it's done, but I feel way more at ease when the foundation is more or less solid and there won't be any radical changes at any point. x'D Lines are just the easiest thing for me to understand haha.

Since I come from a fully non-digital background, I've found the lasso and paint methods I keep seeing so crazy intimidating. I've never been good at painting, always more of a sketch and etching person, so it's very reassuring to see you obtain this final render while inking and having sound arguments to keep at it. i truly appreciate this video because i keep going through this phase where i forget how to color and i’m not pleased how my piece is turning. when i look for videos for a reference sometimes the type of coloring process doesn’t fit mine, so it hard for me to regain a method. i don’t know why or how i forget my own approach....i guess that just shows how i’m not much im not into coloring *awkward laugh*

Yeah..other tutorials are intimidating and it doesn't explain very well, they use hundreds of different colors and layers. This is something I could try. Thanks.
