One of my favorite pieces of media. So much subtlety with the characters and their backgrounds, tension that isn’t artificially created by overly dramatic acting or score, and enough trust in the audience to let them put a lot of the pieces together. Really wish we got more things like this. Can’t wait for the next season of Beast Games, cus I think it’s gonna be even better!

You can tell Jimmy didnt grow up watching tv and that he thought studying reality tv was beneath him. He believes KZbin is the future of entertainment, rather than a distinct medium with differnt audience expectations. The reason most competition shows have mini and main events is because it gives each episode a 3 act structure. Producers are super diligent about creating a narrarive which they have in mind before theyve even wtarted filming and are continuously updating. While they will Frankenstein things together in the editing room, they dont just randomly film and find things jn the edit (which appears to be Jimmy's style). Jimmy ironically underestimated how manipulative these shows are. He is disinterested in people and what makes them tick, but that's what competitions reality is about. Its about creating heroes and villains; tragedies and triumphs. If he wasnt interested in that, he needed to do something more like a rotating weekly format where he invited influencers and celebrities to compete in antics restricted to just that episode. Nobody expects narratives; instead you rely on spectacle and either funny guests or funny commentators.

The IMDb notification thing is most likely you watching the film on Amazon Video, or a Fire Stick, and having your IMDb account linked to your amazon account, or also maybe streaming from a device and IMDb picking it up on that device. Either that or it's some funky shit going on.

It's interesting considering how much Jimmy obsessively studied youtube for years that it doesn't seem like he so much glanced at reality tv. They seem to have made a lot of really amateur mistakes. For one thing, story building is everything. most competition shows roughly follow a 3 act structure. (If someone who hasn't had much screentime is suddenly featured heavily in the first act, they're either getting eliminated, injured, or having a mental breakdown) He should have gotten someone to study ANTM. A xompetition based reality show based on over the top spectacle that revolved around a celebrity and was not outright a kids who but was *incredibly* popular with kids Tyra was very often onsite during early seasons, but they only filmed her for the panels. This meant her presence was always the climax of the episode and fed into the idea she was a very important person. Beast isn't trying to be relatable, so being his own host just cheapens it. He honestly doesn't seem to understand that a reality show is different than a KZbin video. It seems like he mostly thought gh the difference was money without considering *why* professional reality shows have such big budgets (it's because good production value is expensive, and paying pros who know what they're doing is worth it)

@13:28 That Letterboxd pop-up has nothing to do with listening to the movie, if you already have the film open on the app before you watch it, there’s a button that takes up the whole width of the screen that prompts you to rate or add the film to a list. You’re probably just accidentally tapping that button since you already had it on the movie’s page.

YMS turn your phone off halfway through the film and turn it on after you finish and turn the film off to see if the pop up shows. If it doesnt then you'll know the phone is actively listening for credits. If it does then that means IMDB has access to you beyond your phone.

I saw No Country for Old Men in the worst way possible: On AMC. It turned a 2 hours into, I believe, 5-6 hours. The constant commercial breaks increased the tension because you're already on the edge of your seat with the movie and then you have to wait 5 minutes. It was cliff hanger after cliff hanger. Finally, made it to the end and I was pissed. I later re-watched the movie without commercials, the way it was intended, and I enjoyed it. It's just interesting how runtime/commercials can ruin an amazing movie.

I'm with Adam on this one. Squid Game: The Challenge is really entertaining and impressive. I just watched Squid Game for the first time and watched the reality show right after. Being late to the party, I had no idea there was controversy around the show at all. I'm glad I dodged the bullet on that "discourse".

I also agree conceptually that while ethics is a factor to consider, it's not the end all, be all of the conversation. There's weird inconsistencies in which people arbitrarily decide they do and don't care. When I feel iffy about financially supporting a title, I just pirate it. If I recommend it, I tell people to consider doing the same. All the reality tv I grew up in was unethical. Basically every last one. Ive kind of just consider it inherit to the genre tbh, because they're not unionized. Everyone who isn't covered by a union contract gets treated like scum in Hollywood

So Adum's predicament about IMDbreen is thinking you've seen a movie and pushes you to rate it. On the browser, you click away for maybe 5 seconds it'll pop up wiith a prompt to rate it, or refresh. It never happened on the app for me

A lot of the way I evaluate films was informed by watching Confused Matthew's reviews. There are still things he's said that I apply to films today, but when he hated on films I liked, it drove me insane. There's something kind of freeing about hearing other people who I think are equally intelligent give a 10/10 to one of Confused Matthew's most hated films, while giving a 1/10 to his favorite film (Moulin Rouge).

The IMDb “ do you want to rate this movie?” Happens to me all the time, just when I am perusing IMDb, not necessarily when I’ve watched said film. Just because I’m on a movie clicking on the cast and stuff, it assumes that I’ve watched it for some reason. So I get that pop-up all the time, but it’s usually inaccurate at guessing whether I’m watching a movie or something. I don’t think the IMDb app is listening to audio for me.

SPOILERS One of my favorite choices made in NCFOM is having Llewelyn's death be offscreen. Throughout the film Bell's character is reckoning with the struggle of trying to do good in the world, but he can't make a dent because the lack of order and justice. Not showing Llewelyn's death and having the audience learn about it after is so powerful because it reinforces the futility that Bell has been forced to come to terms with. Llewelyn becomes just another causality caught up the violent nature of people.
