55:55 Fun fact, Ralph. Universal did sue Nintendo for using "Kong" in DK in the 1980's. Nintendo prevailed because their lawyer used another court case (Universal City Studios v. RKO General) where it was proved that King Kong was public domain. Nintendo thanked their lawyer John Kirby with a sailboat and naming their Kirby series after him.

0:00 - Intro 1:13 - Warner Bros will be releasing all of their 2021 films both on HBO Max and Theatres 19:44 - Mank Discussion 47:04 - King Kong (1933) 1:02:13 - King Kong (2005) 1:30:53 - Q&A 1:31:04 - You wake up tomorrow, look in the mirror, and see Neil Breen looking back at you. Much to your surprise, you’ve become a clone of Breen, possessing the same supernatural abilities he displays in his films (the ability to freeze time, hack government servers, hook up with bad actresses half your age, eat tuna, etc.) How would you use your otherworldly abilities to help mankind? Or would you instead use your powers to help yourself? 1:33:48 - What’s your opinion on the New York Times 25 greatest actors of the past 20 years list? I know at least Adam has taken a look at this, so who do you think is too high/too low? Any notable snubs? And finally anyone who definitely shouldn’t be there? 1:44:53 - Since you're talking about King Kong, I would like to ask this: What is a movie you like that has really weird sexual implications? King Kong being attracted to the blonde lady for example. Another example, and more famous, is Slave Leia in Return of the Jedi. The whole Leia being enslaved by Jabba has to me really weird sexual implications. Can you think of any others? 1:47:10 - Who is your least favorite actor based on their work and acting style? 1:51:26 - What would you consider to be the most terrifying non-horror films. I would say Seven seeing it is more of a crime thriller than a pure horror film. 1:52:46 - Is it important to stumble into a so-bad-it’s-good movie? Does the reputation of something like The Room or Neil Breen movies actually go against the enjoyment of first time viewers? Next week's recommendation: Bicycle Thieves (1948)

59:17 The "I hear it's something like a gorilla!" "Hey, haven't we got enough of them in New York?" line, I never interpreted that as having any kind of racial or class meaning, as I'm pretty sure another theater guests is shoving past them as they're saying it. Yeah Adum completely misinterpreted that part. I’m actually more upset that they didn’t mention the line where the black native chief says “I’d trade 10 of my women for your white women”. A lot of this movie was a display of whites America’s anxiety around white women being taken by black men and I wish they discussed that. King Kong has been discussed a lot as being a blatant metaphor for black men trying to get with white girls.

I disagree with your critisim of Taxi drivers, the reason Taxi drivers can't lower their prices is because they have to pay tax (uber doesn't because it lies and says it's not a taxi company) and because Taxi drivers often earn a wage they can live off and if they work for a taxi rank they treat them as employees, they again can't lower their prices. You are bascially asking people to possibly commit tax fraud, give up pension plans, sick leave etc and starve themselves, in the vain hope that uber won't also lower it's drivers wages even more starving them too. This is not too mention Taxi's have standard fair, whereas Uber doesn't meaning that it's actually often more expensive to get an Uber or equivalent, than a traditional Taxi. The app is just seen as more convenient. That's the only way Taxi's could become competitive again, if a third party app existed that got traction and became just a ubiquitous.
@frankmerker630
@frankmerker630 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the whole argument that the taxi driving industry is a bad business model is generally flawed because it treats itself as a regulated service industry with wage earning employees. @intelligenceparadigm4931

@@tinyturnip7676 a better selection requires a higher price, essentially. The platform is filled with arguably low quality content because buying universal access to such content through their platform is *very cheap*, so they keep doing it. I would say their philosophy in that regard is quantity over quality; they would rather you run out of *good* content than let you run out of *all* content. Beyond that, revent Netflix shows like The Witcher or Queen's Gambit are, by most estimates, great and popular series. Such series are not especially cheap to produce, so they need more money to continue with them. Don't get me started on how inflation naturally forces price hikes incrementally anyway.

"Ain't there enough gorillas in New York?" There's actually no reason to be offended by this line - you just have to know the historical context. "Gorilla" at the time was just slang for a big dumb guy. Like, in film noir you'd have the detective tell the villain to "Call off your gorilla". Or the kidnapped heroine would say "Let me go, you big ape." They were talking about white guys, and it wasn't racist.

Kong 2005 is a period piece because Jackson wanted to make a "love letter" to that whole era of Hollywood, hence the leading man character. I also feel like the premise of capturing the only known member of an endangered species and dragging it to the US was pretty dated by 2005. Not that we've been living in harmony with nature for the last 15 years, but you just couldn't pull shit like that and get the same apathetic reaction that you would in the 30s.

I think it's very selfish to think streaming is equal to going to the movies. And it's not because directors are insane and think their movies should only be seen on the big screen. It's because of all the people that work in cinema and will lose their jobs. Cinema is not just the writers and the actors and the directors, it's also the people who give you popcorn and show you where your seat is. These people are part of the cinema industry and the cinema experience, and deserve our respect. They deserve to have a job.

If there's no demand in the future, the workers who satisfy that demand will no longer be needed in that position. I personally don't think streaming is equal to going to the movies, I think streaming is far superior to going to the movies.

I think the problem with the HBO MAX thing like Denis Villeneuve puts it is that it will limit the budget even more removing the possibilities of us getting big block busters like DUNE. I love watching movies at home (4K HDR 55" screen in a small room feels like a cinema experience, plus I can pause to pee and get popcorn refills) and I was always resentful when I had to go to a cinema to watch a cultural event movie. Less than 2 years ago I said "I can't wait for cinemas to die so I can just pay to stream these movies at home".....now that's an actual reality and it kinda sucks a little bit.

I wish I could go to the theaters that Ralph has been to because I think that within the last 5 years (excluding 2020 bc I didn't see any movies in theaters) I have only had about one or two positive movie theater experiences. The bad ones that come to my mind are during fantastic beasts 2 there were children running up and down the isles throughout the whole film, and during Endgame someone in the middle of the very front row had there phone on full brightness using Facebook for literally half of the 3 hr runtime opening weekend, and in both examples the staff did nothing. Idc about people being loud or talking (for the most part) but this was so extremely distracting that it impacted my feelings toward to movie. Movie theaters should be a valid option and I hope they don't go away, but 9 times out of ten I would rather watch a film at my own house without having to worry about other people ruining the experience for me. This isn't even counting the amount of times that big groups of people that walk in five to ten minutes after the movie starts and keep getting up without trying to be courteous of others in the theater and blocking the screen because if I did that then Idk if I would ever have a positive experience. I guess I'm pro theater but anti people lol

The reason the new one is set during the 30s is because the early 20th century was a time of adventure and exploration. Much of the world we know today was still alien to westerners, technology like commercial aircraft wasn't available. A place like skull island would still be completely uncharted during that time due to lack of satellite technology. The 30s setting made perfect sense and added a lot to the remake instead of it being a genetic modern day monster flick.
