Sargassum, a type of seaweed, is critical for marine life but is growing aggressively closer to shores. Its increasing presence is creating an unpleasant smell for beachgoers in Florida, Mexico and the Caribbean. NBC News’ Sam Brock shares more details on what’s driving the build up.

One of my best days fishing was topped off by us pitching shrimp around a massive clump of sargasm weed near Venice, Louisiana. We caught so many tripletail and mahi. It's amazing how ignorant most people are, and they will stay ignorant because they gain what they think is knowledge by watching the news, which is mostly talking heads with no real world experiences who talk all day about things they aren't familiar with.

@@JimWellmansounds awesome 😍 and yeah I don’t think anyone is saying it’s a bad thing when it’s a home for the fishies. Only bad when it washed up on the beach to rot 😅 don’t think it’s much of a home for the fishies at that point lolol I agree about the news tho.. that’s why, when you stop watching all together (I ended up here trying to find stuff about the burningman disaster 💀), you’re able to hear the info but fully make up your own mind about it. Like.. all I’m hearing with this is that we have too much waste in the environment. So she’s doin her thang but adding more filters!! Kinda frustrates me how everyone is always talking about oh “electric car this.. energy tht” why don’t we ever talk about the amount of mf GARBAGE everywhere????? That’s MUCH more of an issue IMO than some naturally occurring seaweed washing on shore and rotting to fully break down into nothing 😅

So we put excess nitrogen into the water, the seaweed takes it in, collects it, then carries it to the shore for us. If only we would collect it and take it away from the oceans, we might lower the nitrogen concentration.
