This is very interesting. One day the master catches your hand and one day he frees you from him too. And the second struggle is the greater struggle, but when the master finally manages to free his hand from yours there is no end to the disciple’s gratitude. The truth is that the disciple is grateful when he places his hand in the hand of his master, but on the day that the master takes his hand away, however much he may suffer he will be even more immensely grateful - because the master’s hand only contains a lamp, but when the disciple lets go of that lamp then the light of the whole sun becomes available to him. There was a drop of nectar in the master’s hands: when the disciple lets go of that drop, then the whole ocean
becomes available to him.
Then the disciple becomes even more grateful because when the master was holding his hand it was out of his compassion, but now when he releases it, it is out of an even greater compassion.
And you ask: “Are they still needed after attaining to the ultimate abode of the divine?” Not the slightest need remains for them, but because of the disciple’s gratitude to the master - just because of that feeling of gratefulness toward the master - the disciple will continue to care for them.
Sariputta, a disciple of Buddha, became enlightened.
And Buddha sent him away, “Now you go. Now you can go. Now there is no need to stay with me. Make room for others. Go and spread the message from village to village. Give others what I have given to you.”
Sariputta began to weep bitterly. He said, “Please don't do this to me’’
Buddha replied, “Aren’t you ashamed of yourself?
You are a buddha and you are crying! You are enlightened now - what is all this weeping and crying about?”
But Sariputta continued to cry like a small child. He begged, “Please don’t send me away. I would even prefer to accept that I am not enlightened. Please don’t send me away. I would rather be unenlightened.”
Buddha said, “You cannot deceive me by saying you have not become enlightened. These tactics won't work. You have become enlightened. Now, whether you cry or beat your chest, it is useless. You must go. It is necessary. Go and awaken others. How much longer will you cling to me?”
Sariputta had to go. He went away crying. He must have been a wonderful man, because to cry after having become enlightened is an extraordinary phenomenon. What gratitude he must have had! He left, but wherever he was, every morning and evening he would bow down in Buddha's direction. His disciples would say to him, “You are an enlightened one. Buddha himself has said that you are enlightened. So whose feet are you bowing down to now? What are you doing? Every morning, every evening, wherever Buddha may be -if he is in Gaya, then you bow down in that direction, if he is somewhere else, then you will bow down in that direction.”
Sariputta would always reply, “I have become enlightened because of his compassion. Whatever has happened, has happened through his grace. I can never forget his compassion.”
佛弟子舍利子證悟。
佛陀打發他離開：“現在你可以走了。現在沒有必要留在我身邊了。為他人騰出空間。去村莊之間傳播消息。把我給你的東西給別人。”
舍利子開始痛哭起來。他說，“請不要這樣對我”
佛陀說：“你不慚愧嗎？
你是佛你哭了！你現在開悟了--哭什麼？”
但是舍利子繼續像小孩子一樣哭泣。他懇求說：“請不要把我送走。我什至寧願接受我沒有開悟。請不要送我走。我寧願不開悟。”
佛陀說：“你不能說你沒有開悟來欺騙我。這些策略是行不通的。你已經開悟了。現在，你哭也好，搥胸也罷，都沒有用。你必須去。有必要去喚醒其他人。你還要粘著我多久？”
舍利子必須離開。他哭著走了。他一定是個了不起的人，因為開悟後哭泣是一種少見的現象。他一定是感激不盡！他離開了，但無論他在哪裡，每天早晚都要朝佛陀所在的方向跪拜。他的門徒對他說：“你是一個開悟的人。佛陀說過你開悟了。那麼你現在向誰的腳下拜呢？你在做什麼？每天早晚，佛陀在哪裡，如果他在伽耶，你就朝那個方向禮拜，如果他在別處，你就朝那個方向禮拜。”
舍利子總是回答說：“我因他的慈悲而開悟。無論發生什麼，都是藉著祂的恩德發生的。我永遠忘不了他的慈悲。”
