I have recently seen this NET in progress when storms and tornadoes hit the panhandle. K4NRD is the information man most of time. Great job!

I heard him on the radio, the last time we were monitoring the SarNet!

We monitored the SarNet repeaters all along I-10, as we traveled across the entire North side of the state of Florida. And I love to jump on and chat with Hams, across the state, while vacationing in Florida. I wish Georgia had this system in place too! (I am kind of surprised we don't, due to so many hurricane evacuees, we occasionally have!) I think its great to have, for emergencies! And for those people Hams, who can controll their rag chewing to a minimum. (Not 20 minutes!)

I use this net to help me nap on Wednesdays. It’s a kerchuck system. Cant talk for more than 2 minutes and that limited due to sad ham police. Need to leave it open for emergencies but Even during Ian it was silent. During Hurricane season every ham becomes a weatherman and mentions the 4 microinches of rain and the blown over plastic chair in their yard. Aside from K4NRD, it’s basically useless. And you will be told to stop transmitting if you talk more than 2 minutes and request anything other than a radio check.

Here in NY we don't have something like this as the amount of emergencies are far less than Florida. I'm curious if SARNET is only on Dstar? Are there other modes to use? I like the idea.
@maschwerer2 ай бұрын
SARNET is FM, not D-Star. Any analog 2 meter or 70cm radio can tune in. Great to listen during storms.

@@maschwerer ok thanks. I just assumed because the radio was an Icon id52. That's what I get for being tired during the video lol

It is a microwave system. There are like 65 towers to connect to. I am actually triangled in the middle of three. KO4KML

Is it run and controlled by SAD Hams like all the Repeater's where I live?
@chrissewell16082 ай бұрын
They are just serious about keeping it ready for emergency use, statewide. Its not really there for the 20 minute rag chewers!

I had high hopes for it. When Ian hit here in Fort Myers I was checking in. Nothing. Dead. When you’re in an emergency situation the last thing you want to do is listen to a bunch of amateurs taking about irrelevant topics anyway. Trust me your cellphone is your only hope. Keep it charged.
@rickgilbrt2 ай бұрын
Cellphone. Right. Because cellphones don't require any infrastructure likely to be taken out by a severe storm. Heck, I've seen cellphone service go down due to overload in a Superbowl victory parade, even though organizers brought in COWs to help handle the load. Maybe you'll still have SMS, or maybe not.

This was because they turned off the Ft. Myers towerr duing landfall. They turned it off because they didn't like the backlash they were getting due to their sad ham behavior during landfall. The people that run SARnet are morons with a slightly evil flavoring.
@Rusted_Link2 ай бұрын
Please learn how repeaters and radios work before entering the SARnet. Way too many people simply sending out nuisance splatter because they are too far away or in a faraday cage! A typical HT with a rubber duck inside a bathroom will only send a signal about 12 feet. Get outside, then you can reach out about 5 miles. Get a proper mobile rig with 50 watts and you may reach as far as 15 miles. Just ballparking here guys, your results will vary.
