The DC-8, especially the stretched versions like the -61, are my favorite aircraft of all time. I spent many hours on these airplanes and just loved ‘em. I remember being on one when I was about 4 or 5 years old, flying from Seattle to New York (United) and we were seated in a first class area with two seats facing aft and two facing forward. The crews in those days were outstanding, and they were wonderful to little kids like me and my sister. Later on in life, we went to Hawaii many times pre-747, and the aircraft that was usually on that route (LAX or SFO to HNL) was the DC-8. I recall one time being in the back of a UAL DC-8-61. I love how they were given a new lease on life as the re-engined -70 series later on; those were used frequently on DEN-SEA, so I flew on them frequently.

Thank you for the memories! My first trip to Sweden to visit my Mormor and Farmor was aboard SAS DC-8-61 in First Class. After several yearly trips, SAS flew the 747 on the route. I still ❤️ SAS to this day. Gone is First Class but their Business Class is respectably good. 🇸🇪

The DC-8 was definitely the most beautiful jetliner of all time. The original short 50-series were the best looking of all models.

the DC-8 had the best take-off perfomance,it had a skyrocket take off compared to the scratch-the-bottom take off of the 707,I think the wing desing of the DC-8 was the most advanced

Used to work the DC-8, when pushing back the aircraft, during the engine start process, it was so intensely loud your body would rumble and shake. Think that is one of the reasons their popularity dwindled

The smart airlines made minimal investment in the early 747, bought mainly DC-8-61/63s instead, and replaced the latter with DC-10s or L-1011s in time. This is what the two leading Canadian carriers did (Air Canada and CP). In fact CP eventually ditched the 747 altogether in favour of the DC-10-30. In AC case, many stretch 8s were re-engined with CFM56 engines and re-deployed for all-cargo duty. The stretch 8s had comparable seat mile costs as the 747-100s, but were way easier to pack with passengers, since they were half size capacity-wise. McDonnell Douglas clearly had the best all-around solution for the economics of the period, not Boeing. Eastern, National and Delta understood what AC and CP did; the 747-100 was a short-lived fad for them. Even Western had the good sense to steer clear of the 747. In the end, though, we must give the Boeing sales team tremendous credit for selling so many 747-100s early on. It really was not the right plane for most airlines. By the mid and late 70's I'm sure Pan Am would have loved to be in possession of L-1011-200s and DC-10-30s instead of most of its 747s. The 747 would eventually cost Pan Am its Intercontinental hotel chain and Pacific routes division, as too many were flying with far too many empty seats. --Luc/Airlinercutaways.com

The 747 eventually did find its niche, however, when airlines like Northwest, JAL, Qantas and Cathay Pacific began using it on their respective trans-Pacific routes. When Air Canada acquired Canadian Airlines, CPA's successor, it kept the latter's 747-400s for a number of years, mostly using them on trans-Pacific routes.

Hey, so kind of you to recall that! Yeah, my brother's airplane, LOL. The take-off audio here is actually the NATO 707...pretty much the closest I could get to for the scenes involved. Thanks for the good words guys.

It makes me sad to think that after all that thrilling action, beautiful sound and exciting smoke that it was turned into a crushed beer can at the bottom of some ignorant person's dustbin.

As much as I love spotting, having a farm on the airport's parameter like that ........wow! Especially in an era dominated by jets mounted with the JTD3Ds and Rolls Royce Speys, ect.....Liked the JL '8' that preceded the SK '8'

I wonder what the name of the "Super 60" seen in the clip was. I know SAS used the designation "Viking" on its aircraft for many years.

Too bad they had to spoil a great airframe design by stretching it. The - 61 & - 63 models just never looked right.

+Stratus 262J That your opinion! I had the great chance to fly the DC8-55F and 72CF as a flight engineer. Me and my friends pilots and FE were all in love with the 63 and the 73(what a delight to see a German Cargo 73 over Africa!) Cheers
