SAS: Forged in Hell
With Damien Lewis
Part of our Individual Heroes of WWII Series
• Individual Heroes of WWII
In the summer of 1943, the largest invasion fleet ever assembled sailed for fortress Europe, aiming to bulldoze its way onto Nazi shores. At its vanguard went a few hundred elite forces soldiers, the Royal Navy warship carrying them bearing the iconic winged dagger emblem on its prow, plus the motto 'Who Dares Wins'. Led by the legendary SAS commander Blair 'Paddy' Mayne, these war-bitten, piratical raiders were tasked to do the impossible - to bludgeon their way through the most heavily defended enemy shoreline, so enabling the ensuing forces to follow on.
If they succeeded, it would mark the turning point in the war. If they failed, the consequences were unthinkable. Against all odds, outnumbered some fifty-to-one, and facing a ferocious series of cliffside defences, they would have to dare all as never before.
Damien Lewis is a number one bestselling author whose books have been translated into over forty languages worldwide. For decades he worked as a war and conflict reporter for the world’s major broadcasters, reporting from across Africa, South America, the Middle and Far East, winning numerous awards. damienlewis.com/

It is heartbreaking to hear what difficulties the veterans had after the war. All the horror they had to endure and be plagued by it afterwards. Thanks to Damien for telling and sharing these stories

Damien's observations of the PTSD experienced by the former WW2 SAS soldiers is right in line with the works that Peter Hart did about the infantry, armor and artillery units he has written about. The idea I got from both authors was that those who experienced this kind of visceral "in your face" warfare can't share their feelings with others who weren't there, as they feel no one else could possibly understand who hadn't been there. That's why the veterans group reunions became so important to all these people. They finally reconnected with many of their comrades to be able to talk about it. Beg pardon for the long post-brilliant presentation. PS: Ordered Damien's book and can't wait to read it.

Amazing people at that time, Grandad in first World war age 15 in trenches, then Naval Officer in second world war, I used to read my dads war books as kid and still have great interest, this great. I also got to know David Sterling's Grand Daughter, and stories in South Africa farm she was brought up in.

Absolutely terrific guest! Not too many motion pictures have been made about the Italuan campaign, the worst and most laughable was Von Ryans express, hopefully one day a film about SAS action in Iraly will be produced.

While the premise is quite different, that story about stealing the train and rescuing prisoners from a concentration camp almost makes me think that was what ‘Von Ryan’s Express’ might have been loosely based on 🤔

A first class presentation, i am curious would or maybe the spell bounding movie Von Ryan's Express, is a reference or subliminal connection to the SAS/ POW escape in Italy .

I think so. You're very welcome to comment here, but as I always say, just be nice. Damian doesn't have to come on the channel and share his knowledge, I don't have to create the content. We do it because we like doing so. It's a sorry fact that 80% of viewers first comments are broadly negative. It's an indication of the world we live in I guess - quick to complain, slow to praise

Absolutely gutting discussion of the emotional toll. Aside from not wanting to appear "weak", I have been told that men will not reveal their trauma because they don't want to let their mates down, or give them the idea they can't hold up their end. Heartbreaking. Every A**hole who sees only the macho side of these men or, like some of the U.S. military who complain that troops who read poetry are "woke" need to watch this program.

Read the comments of veterans leaving the US military; it is "woke" where feelings override performance, discipline and training.
