For anyone who somehow took offense to my Turkish Airlines comment: I am a huge fan of the airline and it is one of my favorites. My point in the video was that Turkish was not a FOUNDING member of Star Alliance. Of course I am aware Turkish is a much more important and powerful carrier than SAS. However, they did not play a part in founding Star Alliance while SAS did. My intention was not to downplay TK, it was to make the point that they did not establish Star Alliance when SAS did.

Air France / KLM Group (both carriers part of SkyTeam) providing exit financing for SAS's bankruptcy is the reason why they're changing alliances - I'm quite sure it was a condition of SAS receiving that financing. If the Star Alliance was that concerned with keeping SAS within their group, the could have provided the exit financing instead of a competitor alliance. A missed opportunity for one alliance was a gain for another.

It's been reported that AF/KLM has contractual terms in the deal which will allow them to later increase their initial share (startinng at 20%?) to a "controlling" share, which everyone reads as meaning >50% ownership. And it makes sense for some of the other involved in this deal to wanting someone to be interested in buying some shares from them as they convert loans to shares (IIRC all involved has loans with conversion rights?). It's also been speculated that this "exit Star Alliance" is actually part of the formal agreement, but even if it isn't it makes sense given the likely future of SAS. The exact terms aren't known, just the headlines so we have to speculate a bit.

There is an European Hub up for grabs in Portugal of TAP, the privatization was anounced last week, This one is particularly huge strategically, depite not being huge financially, because the biggest European carrier into South America is in Portugal, because Geography, and also there are no slots available in Lisbon and TAP for historic reasons preaty much owns the place and has all the best slots, as well as historic very valuable slots in major European airports, like very valuable mid morning slots at Heathrow.

ITA is fairly useless anyways. No big hubs, just a little bit of Italy-bound international travel and what's left of the domestic market after the trains got competitive (mostly Naples and Sicily). Probably good for Lufthansa though as they would then control basically all of central Europe. That Portuguese airline sounds much more attractive for transcontinental hub operations, especially with South America.

Thank you for this excellent video. Not everybody would be aware of SAS interesting and pioneering history being the Scandinavian PAN AM with a history going back to 1933. The groups consolidation in 1951 into one company (Scandinavian Airlines System) where the state of Denmark (DDL), Norway (DNL), and Sweden (Aerotransport) were the main shareholders. It was classy, innovative, chic, safe and was severely hit, like so many other flag carriers, by deregulation and the onslaught of low fare companies. It was branded "the businessmans' airline" and operated a vast network of domestic flights all over Scandinavia, connecting Denmark and Greenland and pioneering transatlantic flights via Sondrestrom, Greenland (later broken up by competition after deregulation). The fierce competition and immense developments in the industry has put them in a situation on the brink of bankruptcy (chapter 11 in the USA) and Swedish and Norwegian governments leaving the consortium leaving only Denmark, with a vested interest due to Copenhagen Airport being of immense importance to Danish economy. In the past, Lufthansa and KLM were seen as potential buyers, but history took it in a different direction. Read the interesting, complicated but excellent rendering in Wikipedia. Good luck to SAS! BTW: I love Lufthansa, AF/KLM and happily fly with Turkish Airlines.

Lufthansa has more options, but it relies too heavily on Frankfurt and that airport is a liability. To their credit, KLM have an excellent European network. This is one of those developments that benefits multiple parties: SAS benefits by no longer being the poor cousin in Star Alliance, which is already jammed with European airlines chasing many of the same customers: Lufthansa, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, LOT, TAP, Croatia, Turkish. And the Air France/KLM group benefits by adding the key SAS hub at Copenhagen Kastrup. AF/KLM is already facing pressures to cut capacity at its vital hub at Amsterdam Schiphol, for example. Adding SAS' hubs, particularly CPH, gives AF/KLM additional options for growth if AMS is further restricted.

@@thomasrealist6181 Copenhagen does well for what it is. Denmark is a small country. It doesn't even have a third of the population of the Netherlands. Whereas the Dutch have always been well-connected globally, the Danes have always been bit-players in that respect, usually riding on the coattails of the Dutch and British. Beyond that, the Dutch and Danish business cultures and communication styles are far more compatible than they are with, say, the Germans or the Swiss. SAS will never be a truly global carrier. They have a network, but nothing remarkable. Focusing on more flights between major Scandinavian airports and Amsterdam and Paris makes a lot more sense than the older set-up. SAS can also start new flights to BOM, Seoul, Singapore, Hong Kong, Tel Aviv (which they have to resume), etc. instead of just Bangkok, Beijing, Shanghai, and Tokyo. They should make a big presence in Asia. They can focus on Canada as well by resuming flights to Montréal (as Air Canada serves Copenhagen from Montréal seasonally; a new year-round flight would be efficient), and they can start new flights to Vancouver as well... They should focus on Africa as well (with the help of Kenya Airways), they can resume flights to Nairobi, Johannesburg, etc. After all the controversies are gone, instead of serving Saint Petersburg seasonally, they can finally resume their flights to Moscow (Sheremetyevo)... I think this is the first blow to the global expansion that awaits SAS!

Not realistic at all. I’m speaking as a Norwegian, SAS euro bonus member. First of all Scandinavia is looked by the world as “one market”, arrogant and ignorant position to say the least. Two Scandinavia as a destination isn’t for everyone’s taste/wallet. We Norwegians used to call SAS (Svensk, Alt, Sammen) meaning quite literally “everything is Swedish”. Norwegians has the highest purchasing power and a very unique domestic market, which is the most profitable market for SAS. To put into perspective triangle of Oslo-Bergen-Oslo Trondheim and Oslo Stavanger has around 1.3-2 mill passengers a year. With a one of the highest frequencies in the network. But we were used to pay huge sums until Norwegian (LCC) came in 2002 as a competitor. Denmark has used Kastrup as the major hub and ditched Norwegian market, Sweden has a much smaller network than Denmark but had/has more intercontinental flights such as mentioned like Chicago and Toronto. They have poorer purchasing power, not as strong business/corporate market as Norway but still had a good grip. When SAS opens new intercontinental routes they have to make sure they are able to make a profit. SAS closed many routes such as Dubai, Houston , Seattle, Hong Kong and Bangkok the resent years. Cph is an old dinosaur, Arlanda as well. Oslo airport is the most modern airport 25 years today with two major explosions in those decades. But no chance to get international flights that doesn’t have a strong enough market. Just notice that Norway has no China (Hainan lasted 5 months or so in 2019) connections as one of few Western European countries. Denmark has hubs such as Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Heathrow, Istanbul and others to feed to their final destination with better prices sometimes or more capacity. SAS can’t have double flights a day to LA or Beijing. It just doesn’t work. Sorry for babbling, but I understand that you have hopes, I and so many others gave that up years ago. That’s the reason Qatar airways and Turkish Airlines has snapped up some stake as well as Norwegian on leisure within Europe. I’m upset about this deal. And probably will it book SAS in a while. Due to the fact of the sudden move.

Rather they are apart of sky team or not. We lack in international carriers compared to JFK LAX O HARE SFO & other US city’s

Can SAS swap some of its EWR slots with some of United's JFK slots?
@gulyascredo Жыл бұрын
As French I kinda have no choice but Skyteam. I do prefer AirFrance than any other European carrier so that's easy; but SkyTeam, now lost Aeroflot, has not a single route to Central Asia, this is ridiculous, and disappoints a big traveller like me -- I'd certainly fly SkyTeam if had the choice. SAS joining is certainly better than worse, but AF and KLM both already fly to all Scandinavian capitals, essentially it doesn't fundamentally change the European commercial aviation landscape.

Should it have played a role that KLM has a heavy presence in Scandinavia, flying to 13 destinations in Sweden (3), Denmark (3) and Norway (7) a few times a day? I could imagine SAS being bothered by so many transfer passengers leaking away from their home market to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport instead of using Copenhagen Airport. They could now regain the home market and feeding Copenhagen Airport with more transfer passengers. KLM should rethink their strategy, which part of Europe would get their focus next in order to feed its home airport. I think SAS and AF have much to gain with this deal and KLM not so much. Or am I wrong here?
@RealConstructor Жыл бұрын
@@Valkyrie57 That’s not what I wrote and that’s not the issue. I am Dutch, fly KLM and live close by Schiphol Airport. I just wonder if this SAS share purchase by AF-KLM will benefit Copenhagen Airport, SAS and AF more than, or even disadvantage, KLM and Schiphol Airport. AF-KLM wants to benefit from their share in SAS, so it must make a profit in the future. It could be the case that AF-KLM orders KLM to lower its presence in Scandinavia in order for SAS to strengthen their position in Scandinavia. That would diminish transfer passengers at Schiphol Airport and SAS will regain these passengers to Copenhagen Airport.

I'm an expat American in Sweden who was a former employee of UAL and got permanently disabled onboard a plane from a preventable safety issue. UALSW, the flight attendant department, denies MRIs for crew so your disability is a lie, and all crew are faking their illness and disability, so they can maim, or kill, crew to reduce labor costs. ABA, CBA, and AFA support such practices. I'm alive thanks to Karolinska Institute which United Airlines said was fake, and unacceptable, as only faith healing is allowed at UALSW. BTW, Army is being dispatched to no-go zones that look like America, with gun violence out-of-control. 37,500,000 refugees since W was forced on America after losing both votes for POTUS.
