Blair Mayne died in a car accident at the age of 40, two years before I was born. But in 1970, my dad took me with him to visit one of his old friends from their Queen's University days - he was Dougie Mayne, one of Blair's brothers. My dad told me of this famous war hero & I've been fascinated with the story ever since.

@@samca4472 In my country, a family member or close acquaintance must submit a request to the Ministry of Defence. I know, for example, that Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands made a case for posthumously awarding the highest military decoration (Willemsorde 1st class) to Polish general Sosaboski (Market garden) in 1999, which he then succeeded.

Greatest respect to a fighting man. I wonder where his anger came from? The men he commanded gave him a wide berth if he'd been drinking as he would fight anyone who was near. After the war, he use to go to local pubs and offer to fight anyone. And win. Troubled soul comes to mind. I had NI parents, served in 2 different nations' armies, so met a few with his issues

I believe his superiors argued voraciously for the honour, including Winston Churchill and Montgomery - you can't get much higher than that, however, they are not the awards committee. I don't know why they reduced the honour to a third bar, but politics and sour grapes might have a hand in it!

The story of him not satisfied with a raid and going back to single handedly eliminate enemy combatants just about floored me when I heard it. Looking at those pics of the early SAS in the desert I have always thought that I would not have liked to have messed with those boys. Mayne had both brains and brawn. All I can say is God help those enemy combatants when they came across him and his mates. RIP Paddy. Thank you for what you did for my generation.

I suspect his combativeness and natural belligerence, towards enemies and his own side, was because he was what we would now call bipolar. He didn't feel fear or respect for authority in the same way that most people do. An ideal quality for a soldier though, and a rugby player.

A recent book on Stirling suggests with evidence that Stirling did not actually found the SAS, it was his elder brother and Stirling was not very effective either, and then got captured through his own negligence. It was after the war and when Maine was killed in a road accident that Stirling re-invented himself and took on the mantle of Maine, as if it was he who had achieved so much. Most likely Stirling briefed against the Maine legend. A pity…
