You should have placed the beamers body at a wall so it doesn't get pushed away. Then you could have it really shortened in just one punch. Another idea: Do you still have that Ford estate you also transformed into a "police car"? If so you could punch the body from two sides at once with both cars.

What caused the bmw to end up just having a body left?

It was used as a donor vehicle. Axles, gearbox, engine and everything that was useful was stripped of the Beemer. The reason it was trashed I because the body was rotten and not worth saving.
