1976 - Just received from friends in Europe this much clearer (Video & Sound) footage of Shirley Bassey's wonderful 1976 Melbourne Australia Concert. This clip: Shirley Bassey performs one of her favorites from over the years, 'Yesterday When I Was Young'. This song has been recorded by many artists over the years, but Shirley has been extremely faithful to this wonderful song. She has regularly included it in her Concert Line-Item for 5 Decades, and counting.
ABOUT this song:
It was subsequently released in English as "Yesterday, When I Was Young", in Italian as "Ieri Si", in Danish as "Hvor tiden går", in Japanese 帰り来ぬ青春, and in Spanish as "Ayer Aún". It is considered one of Aznavour's greatest hits.
The English-language lyrics, written by Herbert Kretzmer, tell of a man reflecting on his life. He recounts how he had wasted his youth on self-centered pursuits, and that, now that he is older, he will not be able to do all that he had planned; this implies that he may be close to his impending death. Charles Aznavour performed this song with Patrick Bruel in a live performance. This version can be heard on Aznavour's 40 chansons d'or album.
In the United States, the best-known version was recorded by country music performer Roy Clark. His version became his biggest hit up to that time on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart, peaking at No. 9 in August 1969, and indeed, it became his only top 40 pop hit, peaking at No. 19. The song has been performed and recorded by many international stars, such as, Shirley Bassey, Bing Crosby, Dusty Springfield, Mel Torme, Lena Horne, Andy Williams, Jimmy Durante, Bobby Bare, Al Martino, The Peanuts, Glen Campbell, Julio Iglesias, Eddy Mitchell, Dean Reed Johnny Mathis, Marc Almond, Patricia Kaas, Nora Aunor, etc., and an uptempo version by Blossom Dearie. According to Billboard, more than 90 versions of the song were recorded before 1972

For the first time, I looked up the lyrics. I get why you cry your eyes out. Wow, I can really relate to this song now. It's a song of regret and a reminder that we have limited time. As far as the past goes, we did the best we could from the mindset we had back then. So, here's to Tomorrow.
@alvaroq2024

@@garythompson9452 Many of us have had a good mindset from when we were in our teens. And still in our thirties our mindset never change. On to the forties our mindset remains the same. Nothing has changed except the fact that we’re getting old, and our mindset is still intact! I don’t believe in regrets because then how isn’t not fair that our decisions could’ve changed people’s mindset? We will never know.

@@alvaroq2024 Thanks for your comment. From my perspective, throughout my life, my mindset has changed through experiences. When I look back at certain events I know I would react differently now. That's how I deal with my many regrets of the past. Of course, we have the added ingredient of not knowing what would have happened if we had taken a different pathway. There is an old film called Sliding doors which demonstrates this point perfectly.

Yesterday when I was young the taste of life was sweet as rain upon my tongue. I teased at life as if it were a foolish g ame, the way the evening breeze may tease a candle fl ame. The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I planned I always built alas on weak and shifting sand. I lived by night and shunned the naked light of the day and only now I see how the years ran away. Yesterday when I was young so many drinking songs were waiting to be sung, so many wayward pleasures lay in store for me and so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see. I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out, I never stopped to think what life was all about and every conversation I can now recall concerned itself with me and nothing else at all. Yesterday the moon was blue and every crazy day brought something new to do. I used my magic age as if it were a wand and never saw the waste and emptiness beyond. The game of love I played with arrogance and pride and every flame I lit too quickly quickly died. The friends I made all seemed somehow to drift away and only I am left on stage to end the play. There are so many songs in me that won't be sung, I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue. The time has come for me to pay for yesterday when I was young.

Yesterday, when I was young The taste of life was sweet like rain upon my tongue I teased at life as if it were a foolish game The way an evening breeze would tease a candle flame The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I planned I always built to last on weak and shifting sand I lived by night and shunned, the naked light of day And only now, I see how the years have run away Yesterday, when I was young There were so many songs that waited to be sung So many wild pleasures that lay in store for me And so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see I ran so fast that time, and youth at last ran out And I never stopped to think what life was all about And every conversation that I can recall Concerned itself with me, and nothing else at all Yesterday, the moon was blue And every crazy day brought something new to do And I used my magic age as if it were a wand I never saw the waste and emptiness beyond The game of love I played with arrogance and pride And every flame I lit, so quickly, quickly died The friends I made all seemed somehow to drift away And only I am left on stage to end the play Yesterday, when I was young There were so many songs that waited to be sung So many wild pleasures that lay in store for me And so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see There are so many songs in me that won't be sung 'Cause I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue And the time has come for me to pay for yesterday When I was young

This song sung by Shirley and she herself are my parents favorites when I was a kid. Father sang this when arrived home from interisland voyages as a seaman. We three of us only gathered twice every month. Now my parents could not sang this music for they both are gone and no longer had yesterday, and me no longer young. This music penetrates my being for among the most sung by both as music loving parents.

What a beautiful and real song. In our young years we never think about getting old, and how one mistake in life, can cost so many wonderful years to disappear and seem as if they never happened. Never trust anyone again for your future, it's up to each one, women especially to carve a unique road alone, and strong both economically and emotionally. Finding the right soul mate can still be a dream and maybe a reality, when we allow ourselves to be open to some ethical individuals who live up to their words, won't steal, lie, and especially damage their partners, the ones, they promised to care for before friends, family a community, and share life. Only our children are a fragment of a passed life, non existent today, because American society damages families and their reliability on each other, is viewed as weak. How horrible the advancement of a false narrative disseminated to young adults that have ruined the lives of both millennials and Gen Z that have been given the best money could have offered, and in return, have become heartless American spoiled brats. They behave in an egocentric narcissist mannerism like this current President, who is heartless. The baby boomers somehow were able to excel and make the necessary changes to build a better society over the last fifty years, somehow, this too is being eroded, with young adults being deaf, and working towards their own selfish rewards rather than society's urgent needs. When we allow ourselves to unplug, and think about the week and the challenges ahead, we look towards European life styles that are still family oriented with strong bonds, something lost in American translation.

With you all the way. But you know, our principles and morals are as vitally important today as they were in those years immediately after the war. Climate change is creeping up on these younger generations and life will become a harsh reality and then they will come to learn the value of trust, honesty and selflessness in others. I shall never, to my dying day, allow any young wippersnapper to dictate to me what values are important and those that are not. It is those very values that saw us triumph in the face of evil, costing millions of lives and yet we prevailed. No , no amount of protest marches can defy the realities of life. To undermine those values benefits no one ultimately.

@@Sjb2077 When one takes G-D out of the marketplace, that vacuum has been opened to nonsense like "climate change," "perceived racism," "green energy," "anti-life," "sexual deviation," "self hate," and other Leftist "isms." Take G-D out, then then evil is free to roam. Think hard. The MSM, Big Tech, pop/sports personalities, corrupt politicos and their allies, currently disseminate propaganda NOT Truth! They're NOT "progressive" but "Regressive." Choose the Right path.
