As a Mozambican who speaks Portuguese as my L1, a.k.a my mother tongue, the fact that I'm part of a 16,6% minority still baffles me, especially given that I live in a “city” where most kids only speak Portuguese. It's easy to forget that a broad swath of the population doesn't even speak the language.

Bit of a tall ask but is there any chance you could start Portuguese videos too? I am currently learning Portuguese and would love to have these videos in Portuguese too! A bit like Portuguese with Leo, he makes videos about Portuguese in Portuguese and using your videos to practise would be awesome! And I’m so glad you’re back 🎉🎉🎉🎉!
@SachaDoesPortugueseАй бұрын
I appreciate the request! To answer your query, I would say that I don't have any current plans to make or remake my videos in Portuguese simply because of the amount of work involved in doing so. For that purpose, I do my lives in both Portuguese and English, translating between them, although understandably that isn't exactly the same as the single-topic structured videos I produce. If I ever do shorts/reels/tiktoks, I would definitely consider it though!

These are really great, Sacha. There is so little out there about African Portuguese that your videos become very useful to understand these other dialects. Would love to hear about Portuguese in São Tomé and how there regardless of the existence of Forro, Portuguese is actually more spoken (from what I understand)

As a Mozambican of Tsonga origin currently living in the south (a.k.a the region where Tsonga is spoken), I'm ashamed to admit that I was today year's old when I learned that Tsonga= Tswa+ Ronga (plus changana, which btw I wonder why it's not included). I guess my ignorance stems from the fact that linguists are pretty much the only ones who use the word “Tsonga” around these parts. The rest of us, ordinary folks😂, simply refer to the languages by their names: XiChangana, XiTswa, and XiRonga, and GiTonga; the prefixes “Xi” and “Gi” are often not used by non-linguists when they refer to those languages in Portuguese. On a completely unrelated note, Idk why but it took me a while to realize there are subtitles on this video. 😂 Anyways, mad props for the vid. Love it when people take interest in our slice of hel..., cough, I mean heaven, slice of heaven.😁 iykyk

Delighted to have you comment! The truth is that even in the realm of linguistics, there is a broad lack of study of the languages themselves, so terms and classification around the languages are more limited than they ought to be in the field.
@deliohector2 ай бұрын
@@SachaDoesPortuguese Yup, you're absolutely right. Btw, one of my former college professors just published a Ronga grammar book, which is beyond cool. That being said, I have a confession to make.😬 Gosh, this is embarrassing...So, I dabble in Linguistics myself. See, I'm an English-Portuguese translator, and I had like 3 years of Linguistics in college. But hey, at least I'm not one of those who majored in Bantu Languages. Also, I take solace in the fact that I didn't major in Linguistics.🤣😁🤣 Also, dang ur fast! I was still watching the video and I already got a reply. I appreciate that.

I think any Spanish speaker would understand Mozambican Portuguese better than European Portuguese because of its closed vowels and Brazilian Portuguese because they pronounce d as dj,t as tch,terra as teha,dormir as dohmih,rica as hica

4:14 where did you hear that acess to education was severly limited for native populations? The majority of the leaders of independency movements studied in Coimbra. If you see a random classe picture from that time the majoraty shows much more black students than whites... even teachers are black. Except maybe in Luanda or Maputo where the white population was higher
@SachaDoesPortuguese2 ай бұрын
You have to understand that simply because some, a very small proportion, had access in that time does not mean it was *broadly* true for the native population at large. Education was heavily limited by infrastructure and resources, which is of course an access issue.

I loved watching your videos, but this is not fair or accurate account of the state of the portuguese language in Mozambique. All your sources are outdated, and even the most primary one, is 7 years old. I'm sorry but this is sloppy and unfair to the Mozambican people and anyone who would like to know more about our country.
@SachaDoesPortuguese2 ай бұрын
I understand where you're coming from! I simply went with the most recent systematic and all-encompassing data that is available with regard to the situation of language and education. It was not my intention to paint Mozambique in an unflattering light, but rather take a snapshot of where things stood with the data available to that effect. I would also emphasize that the small selection of recommended reading linked in the description is *not* exhaustive for what I consulted to make the video. Perhaps I could have alluded more emphatically to the fact of rapid change in the country, which is evident when comparing the numbers I went with for population especially. I appreciate your comment and your points!
